That looks really good.

I worked with a Tiny1-C(same module, no flex, more densely integrated) before it was released, and the preproduction devboard it came with is *really* similar to the P2. The sensor module has SPI(in some versions), I2C, UART, and a regular parallel digital output(DVP). The Realtek chip is literally just a DVP to UVC hardware interface used for generic webcams as well. Their cores are a pleasure to work with, very intelligently designed.

The temptation was too much. I ordered one.

It was cute watching the chiplets in the Pi heat up, like watching valve/tube heaters kick in and start emitting thermions.

Infiray seems to have really been cornering the market for high-performance thermal imaging sensors lately. I believe they were the first Chinese company to commercialise a 1920x1080 sensor, and they recently introduced what they say is the first 8-micron pixel thermal imager.

@@AureliusR Just a suggestion. If you can buy it from Amazon where it's FULFILLED by Amazon, I'd suggest do that rather than Aliexpress. I've read so many reviews on Aliexpress talking about hos difficult that their support is to deal with, especially for proven FAKE/CLONED garbage. With Amazon, as long as FULFILLED BY AMAZON, it's easy to get any problems resolved. if it's "sold and shipped" by the seller, PERSONALLY, I never buy. The rules are different when something is shipped by the seller as compared to FULFILLED by Amazon. Just a suggestion.

Cheers for a great in depth review Mike! Looks way better than dito FLIR dongle cam addon, and the 24 fps feature sold me right away after the frustration of handheld lagfest whilst searching for hot components on a tightly populated pcb with all tiny components gets me every time... If this is an early-ish version where they've spent most of the time doing the hardware perhaps we can expect some nice app updates in a near future addressing the things you pointed out here for starters?! I can see this causing some headaches for Seek Thermal, FLIR etc purely on the fps feature alone since that will easily drive sales. Also being more compact and less in the way whilst troubleshooting stuff. Saw below that someone just bought one at aliexpress for £175 shipped to UK including VAT - if the fps and size didn't sell it, the price surely will since any similar device made in EU or USA with that framerate would probably set you back a grand, if not more?! Never really checked since it's way outside my hobbyist budget for something I use rarely... Again, cheers for the review and fantastic tip!

The specs and performance look pretty good, I've just ordered one off AliExpress, it includes the clip on macro lens and the same poor storage bag. The price today, there's a bit of a deal on, is £ 175 shipped here to the UK including the 20% vat add on.

Great video, hope you can do a comparision video with flir, seek, etc, so people can choose the right model

I love it, I've had one for over a year now. I keep it inside my old Seek Thermal case, which it fits into with ALOT of space to spare. I didn't get that magnetic macro lens thing through. It wasn't available at the time.

Wow thank you for the tear down! I own one and I'm tempted to open it to see the internals but it's my first thermal sensor and I don't want to ruin it.

Have owned the T2L for half a year now. Great piece of hardware and the adjustable lens allows you to go in really close if needed. The 25 frame rate changes everything, you can just intuitively point it around. I am not worried too much about the software support long-term because in the end it outputs UVC video which will allow any program to at least read the output. It is not the most precise but for PCB or home insulation sleuthing these things don't have competition.

Excellent review! I just bought P2 Pro for about three months. Its multiple functions are convenient. It makes smartphone a wonderful tool. Besides, the resolution is good enough for work.

Mince review. goos seeing you again. I just finally picked one of these up since I had the original FLIR one for iPone. the big clunky one with the manual shutter calibration and they stopped supporting in with an app update. It did its thing for 8 years but it was time for an update.

I've got a HT 301 which is pretty much a InfiRay T3 in a different enclosure. I think it uses the UVC zoom control for setting palettes and stuff. When connected to a PC there are a couple of rows of pixels at the bottom which appear to contain data from the camera. Maybe this one operates in a similar way? Hopefully the US removes their framerate restriction for thermal cameras. I wouldn't even consider buying a camera from a US manufacturer at the moment when you can get 3x the frame rate at half the cost from China.

Really like it, might just have to grab one, my old Flir C2 has been looking to retire for a while.

That was a really in-depth review. I use a spotting thermal scope and the software on my thermal scope is naff too. I'm unsure if naff software and thermal imaging is a common thing or just manufacturers being a bit weird. Like others have commented here - could a lens be attached to create a better zoom? It would give the device a much broader range of uses. Even is a clip on magnetic lens was included for an extra £100 it would attract more buyers.

I just got the T2S+ and use the xtherm app which is a different app then you are using? The T2S+ is 256x192 with adj built in macro lens infinity to less then 1". I waiting years for these to get better and for price to come down, these by far are better then seek or the bad design of FLIR built in battery.

rom home security to outdoor adventures, it seems like the perfect tool to have in various situations. Its compact size is a huge plus too, making it incredibly portable and easy to take with you wherever you go.

An AliExpress seller is using this vid for marketing, so it must be a good review.

The ambient temp could be to compensate for reflection. If the target object has a low emissivity then the reflection of the surroundings off the object will affect the temperature. They may also be compensating for air absorption/emission of IR, although they would need to know distance and humidity for that to be accurate.

You need to know background scene temperature if emissivity is not 1, because if emissivity is 0.5, 50% of the IR light from the object is coming from the background and does not reflect the objects temperature. (total IR = emissivity*temperatureK^4+(1-emissivity(reflectivity)*backgroundtempK^4) Fortunately, a lable, or splash of more or less any paint or grease or tape gets you to emissivity 1, and that's almost always the better way.

That's an incredibly little thing, it seems like it'd be very useful for thermal measurements through small gaps in walls or something like that.

12:13 - on an old Pi 3 using a thermal camera you can see each of the 4 cores in the CPU doing things. It's very cool (or hot!) - sadly the metal case of the Pi 4 CPU makes this difficult now

If you do electronics work, you might wan to consider something that has 2 cams built in. The thermal element and a actual video element so that the video can be superimposed over the thermal image. For electronics, this makes identifying SMD components so much easier.

The resolution and framerate looks great compared to similar devices. I guess they can't do the dual-camera overlay like flir, because of the patent.

no. the patent is expiring and you can work around the wording. The issue is that if you don't know the distance of the cameras, how can you align the pictures?

@@kwinzman sure, the cheap rgb camera is cheap - now you need to precisely align it, so that both axis look in the same direction. If the two cameras squint even a few degrees of axis, you have a mess on any distance. Then splice the video stream "somehow". You could do an internal USB-Hub, but that is expensive and huge. You could create a jumbo frame with both - now you sync two cameras and need an FPGA or Microcontroller with serious memory just to compose the images. Note that when done right, the IR-Module never actually has a full image - you need to chop the video into packets "eitherway", so why waste memory and at time delay just to...? Yeah, much easier and faster to store the ADC results just in the packet buffer and send the packet on its way when its time. Also note the lack of polish in this product and details like the app. Mike does not mind them, but they are there. Now make that with the overlay technology and it becomes the opposite of helpful as the pictures annoyingly only align when freshly user calibrated (for that specific distance), but the user calibrate button glichtes out regurlaly, so you don`t want to user calibrate... so you switch it off and wonder about the waste of space of an RGB camera, when the smartphone cameras are so much better "eitherway".

your video gave me the idea of mounting a thermal camera inside my iphone SE (2016). maybe run jumper cables to the lightning port and have the negative/black wire go through a reed switch and use the magnet on my keychain splitter to activate it? shove the battery down a little bit, take apart the infiray p2, drill out a hole in the case, hot glue lol. it looks like its pretty decent image quality from your video with no additional lens, just the packaging. I really do like the size of my mini iphone, its actually the guts of an SE shoved into an iphone 5S case that i made. hmm so many ideas. thanks for uploading this. probably the only footage on the internet of the inside of this thing plus image quality without lenses!

There are at least 3 different PC windows apps for it. You can ask infiray for one, other are on internet.

Do you have the 'tof viewer' app..? I know its not thermal but it does the best job of night vision on android that I've seen by far

These are already affordable in any professional case. You get your ROI in a month or two, tops! We covered you last thermal camera in one mont just because diagnosing some computers took ten seconds instead of ten minutes or two hours.

Mike I need to use this camera to find thermal asymmetries in some large angle high temperature sources. Whenever I use it for this purpose the camera gives a prompt about overheating. Do you think this can be avoided with better cooling of the sensor/PCB?

Try different R-pi emulators to see if the camera works properly or not. IMO, by seeing how this camera behaves overall, all the issues it has are in software. The hardware seems pretty on point.

My phone doesn't show the correct temperature on the app; it's always -273,15°C. When I change to the Kelvin unit, it shows 0°K. It seems I can't calibrate it, even when I set the ambient temperature to my room temperature, it doesn't work. I tried it with the TC001 App, and the temperature works there. So I think it's a problem with the P2 Pro App. Can anyone confirm that? My phone: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Thats pretty cool, have been getting pretty fed up with the seek software lately - if these guys put some more effort into the app I'm ready to switch!

It's just a regular UVC camera so any video player will work. The only thing extra is a few lines of pixels in the bottom of the frame that encode metadata like temperature ranges etc.

I'd have to pick up this one specifically to test but OpenCam and HedgeCam are both really great for supporting wacky/unusual cameras, due to being forks of each other. Specifically, on a Pixel 4 I have laying around, I'm able to access the infrared front-facing face detection camera whenever I wish - not quite as handy as a true thermal camera, let alone one that can be flipped around when needed, but it's still a handy thing!

It is probably a USB 2.0 device, if it is, it will not be long until someone plugs one into a "GreatFET One" and fully reverse engineers everything that the application does and creates an open source application.

Because their job is creating the device and making it functional. It's not worth their time to make the UX wonderful, but you can do that for others if you want.

Could I use this in a wider angle application. I want to stand in front of my house and use the thermal image to find health leaks through windows ect.

I've used mine to see power adapters I *thought* were turned off, sitting there drawing power, getting hot, and wasting my money! If it's warm, it's using power.

There is also an InfiRayGo app, which will work with this P2 Pro camera. Worth trying it.

How hard would it be to get that lens out?

Taking a look at an Aliexpress page for this product, there's no mention of focus. It doesn't appear that there's a manual adjust for focus, so is it a fully automatic focus (from near to far) or simply just close? How would this work outdoors?

You don't focus it. It's quite a wide lens so they are relying on the hyperfocal distance. Things are in focus from about 30cm to Infinity.

The Focus is fixed to "Infinity" I'd say. I mean, I ordered mine with the macro (SMD Diagnostics are a breeze with this thing).

I've tried to buy from the manufacturer, but failed. I even tried my agent in Shanghai... no luck. Not sure that they really are available yet

Neat. IIRC, the Pi boot loader starts the GPU first, that tiny first hot spot, and it, the GPU, then initializes the RAM, that tiny second hot spot, then starts up the CPU core, that big third hot spot, after which it transfers control to the CPU. Cool to see it in action like that.

These are interesting. I have an old thermal camera for android phones that uses micro USB and specifically USB OTG, but neither of things work properly on modern android phones. So I have to keep a really old phone around just to occationally use the old camera. Maybe I need to upgrade...

@@petevenuti7355 Huh, every phone I've had had OTG going back to some ancient HTC something or other running Android 3 - on a phone with a micro USB port, you need a special OTG cable that shorts the 5th pin to ground which tells the phone to go into USB host mode (otherwise it's a USB device). My last few work phones have come with a USB OTG adapter that plugs into the phone with micro-usb and provides a USB type A female socket on the other side (like a standard USB port you'd find on a computer)

There should be a standard IR camera API already so that we could have a best of breed Open-source viewing software starting to mature.

Affixing with double sided or glueing a magnet on the back may be a handy method of mounting the camera as long as you can source a flexible cable. Interesting that all the boot parameter text is in ENGLISH.

How would you go about to get this working as a Tele lens? Using laser focus lenses? Can it detect people at longer distances?

Just serch the eBays for "CO2 Laser Focus Lens PVD ZnSe Focal Lens Dia.18mm 20mm for Laser Engraver Head". Some people 3D print the stand-off tube for this lens. I used a section of metal tubing and B7000 cement. Just tinker with proper focal length, set the distance with tape temporarily then build!

Wish I could afford one but well out of my price range. Would make some mobile repairs so much easier.

There is also a Infiray Xtherm T3S and Xtherm T3Pro which costs nearly three times more for 2.25 times the number of pixels 384×288 (T2S+ and P2 Pro has 256×192) still with a 25 Hz frame rate. Personally I can't justify the higher price.

288p camera can be 50cm away from the bench on a pantograph with all that space available to you, to work with your both hands and even flip and move the board around, solder and rework without spewing the lens and camera with flux and fumes ;)

This would be an insane fpv camera. Is there a way of unsoldering the camera and soldering it to a fpv transmitter? Or maybe there's a way without damaging/unsoldering the board? I'd be curious for your input, and great video!

@@rolliseventeen I’m currently using one of those mini cellphones and TeamViewer to operate it remotely via. OTG to a thermal images. It’s super cool, but can only work where there’s a cellular signal. Hopefully prices for thermal camera drones will come down soon!

Did you manage to get one of the black friday priced ones on aliexpress? Pretty good to get the camera and the macro lens for $185, but it was annoying to dig through the 30 different "products" they had listed to find one that wasn't sold out of the combo pack with the macro (and that their $40 off coupon worked, but the $45 coupon didn't)

Emissiv-tea - nice name for a band. Or a hot beverage for gen-z RF engineers. Decent price for this unit, I definitely welcome any FLIR competitor.

Sounds to me like it's time to revisit that World's Smallest Thermal Camera project :p

When it comes to thermal cameras the products from Chinese companies really seem to offer by far the most for the price. Infiray, Qianli Super Cam....so many nice companies that offer thermal cams with higher resolutions, much better framerates, closer focusing distances and even the software is often better. Their software might have flaws too, but just for a little comparison. I'm currently using a Flir One Pro which is worse in all the points above and cost much more. The Flir doesn't work on the PC and their App had for about 9 months a bug where half of the menu wasn't accessible because it was off the screen on most recent phones. It took me about 2-3 weeks to finally find a way to contact the Flir support for a bug report because their ticket system didn't let me log in and all provided eMail addresses were dead or just replied to their non working ticket system. But even after reporting such a massive bug it took months to fix it....together with a new product they try to sell. It was my first and last Flir. Happy to see that these days we can get something much better for the money. Looking forward to an upgrade.

From my experience with quite a few cameras, I found only the FLIR ones can read temperature with any accuracy. The Chinese offerings and Seek both fail to read temperatures within even 5C of accuracy, sometimes off by more than 10C. They are good tools for finding shorting spots, but not good for radiometry. I know how to handle different emissivity, and I've received some proper radiometry training, the cameras just aren't accurate enough. I use a T3Pro from Infiray, and for what I do with it it is capable enough, but if you want concrete numbers, forget about it. I only use it to make sure my SOT883 transistors don't explode, and for that teeny tiny size I need a high resolution camera with a refocusable lens, hence the 384*288 camera. But I would be fooling myself if I cared about absolute accuracy. I only need to know if it is =175C. Any error within the gap is fine for me.

@@bskull3232 i cant say that over my P2 pro. i played a lot with it and even could monitor a slightly raised body temperature on my forehead of 38.2°C when i got the flu a week ago vers. 36-36.6°C normal. i'd call that super precise for a non prosumer product.

@@casemodder89 Good for you. Maybe mine are zebras. After all I didn't have tens of them, just a few. Most of mine measure body temp in north of 40C. That being said, I live in the north and the ambient here is cold, so the cameras tend to read higher than true temp. If your ambient is closer to the object being measured, you will get better accuracy.

@@bskull3232 Well, I can't confirm that either. Of course, thermal imaging won't getting accurate unless you are in the high 3 or 4 figure price range. There the sensors are usually compenasted for temperature changes and drift. Also: Emissivity is a great factor. I Usually use .95 for the most daily stuff, when I want to d accurate then I need to set the factor accuratly, then the results are pretty accurate. (I tested that on my 3D printer, I installed a separate thermal probe, used a matte tape and tested it with 70 degrees C of temp). 1-2C's difference is to be expected, with no account for emissivity 5C are possible, or even more, but usually a thermal camera is used to spot faults, defects or thermal bridges, rarely I've seen those to get used for referencing temperatures. In my expierience with also some higher end FLIR's, it's mostly user error. Also: The pricepoint.

@@jensharbers6702 Cheap cameras have single point temperature compensation sensor. When the camera is being warmed up or being cooled down, the compensation temp is not lens temp, thus the compensation can be thrown off by a few deg C, that's a major source of error. If you pull a camera out of your pocket into the cold winter air, you will find it being quite inaccurate for the first few minutes. Unfortunately, I don't do thermal imaging for a living, I only use it sparsely when I have to, so they never get to be properly warmed up or cooled down to reach thermal equilibrium.
