Infinity Reference Tweeter and Speaker Upgrade - 2019 Mustang GT

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My 2019 Mustang GT Premium did not come with a "premium" audio system, so I decided to try to correct that. Infinity Reference has always been a good sounding speaker to me while not requiring a lot of power from an external amp. They work really good off the stock amp. I replaced the tweeters in the pillars, the center channel and the upper mid-range speakers in the doors with 3.5s 2-ways. I purchased the 6.5s for the lower door placement, but ended up keeping the factory ones instead after testing. Sound was infinitely better, the highs and mids are crystal clear and I'm very happy with it. Although it wasn't until I made a slight change with my FORScan software that they truly came to life. I'll have a video up soon about that and will link below.

    Excellent review. My consideration to upgrade the Ford 9 speaker system on a reasonable budget would be as follows: keep the lower door woofer speakers as they appear to be the best in the system. No need for coax here since I would go with the infinity mid range speakers with tweeters in the upper door and mid dash area. I would actually leave the stock pillar tweeters alone too since the Infinity's will definitely fill the bill. As for the lower door speakers staying as woofers I would install an 8" subwoofer by OEM Plus Audio in the trunk which is reasonably priced and includes its own amp. The roll-off filters would be wired to those lower door speakers. As for the rear speakers I would replace them with good pair of coax, either by Infinity, Kicker, or Alpine.

    Makes a lot more sense when replacing the 3.5" speakers to unsolder the short harness from the old speaker and move it to the new so that you can unplug them rather than cutting off the end of the wiring harness and directly connecting to the speaker. I just finished installing bass blockers and 3.5's in both the doors and the dash in my 2019.

    I hope you maintained the proper polarity. That is very important for great sound. Another important thing is to make sure you try to get the speaker impedance right. The ohms ratings are something to consider given that in the past, car speakers were very efficient so they didn't require lots of power

    For others doing this, the new Infinity speaker will not fit the OEM black plastic ring mount so you will need to remove it. You can cut out the oem wire clip from the ring (keep a hole with the cut out connector and it can be attached to the unused 3rd bolt hole) and solder the leads to the new speaker or buy a generic 72-5600 Ford wire harness adapter which includes female spade connectors. I found that I still needed to shim the bolts out about 3/8" because the steel cone is slightly too large a diameter for the hole in the door. I used a 3/8" block of rubber under each attachment ear drilled for the bolt. I also used a strip of closed cell foam compressed under the speaker rim around the circumference to further isolate the speaker from the door metal.

    You do have an adapter for every speaker you replace in your car, I did it on my 2012 3.7 and now sense I bought a 2021 5.0 liter I plan to do the same with it. Just unsolder the wires off the original speaker and resolder it back on the new speaker. I love clean installs that don't mess with the factory wiring.

    Great video. I've got an '18 that came with the 9 speaker system. I was lucky enough to have the wiring in the trunk for the shaker sub. I added one from a parts car for pretty cheap and the bass is surprising. The stock door 6-½" may sound ok but I had one freeze up early on. I'm disappointed to hear that the Infinitys didn't work out there. What would you try if you had to replace them?

    I think if you had something that wasn't a 2-way like what I had and just the woofer like from a component set, that might work out better overall. For some reason those Infinity's I tried didn't sound good at all. Good luck with it, hope you find something you like!

I found metra 72-5600 on a few forms saying it works for a lot of ford tweeters as they used the same in a few years/ models Or use T-taps behind the oem wiring harness I’ve for 3.5s & tweeters?

    Sorry man, I can't remember if the center and tweeters where exactly the same. Worse case you could try those adapters if they aren't very expensive and if they work, great! If not, you could just tap the wires behind the oem connectors. I just went all in, and cut the adapter off and hardwired the new speakers in. Good luck with it!

    Have a 2019 mustang gt with the B&O system. I am thinking of changing out the center deck speaker with a skar tx35 speaker. My daughter has a pink power wheels mustang with a 3.5 speaker in it so I bought a set of 2 way 3.5 inch speakers to swap that one out. With the left over speaker I'm going to try and run it in the center dash speaker to see if it adds some clarity to the center channel. Very excited to see how it goes. I know skar is mainly a subwoofer brand but I'm guessing their mid speakers have to be an upgrade over the cheap stuff ford puts in. Will update this comment after I try it out. I do have aftermarket bass. Two Illusion C10XL subwoofers running on a mosconi one 1000.D amplifier. So adding a touch more clarity up front would be a big step up. And if I can pull it off without spending hundreds of dollars I will be super happy.

    Hey Lance, I really like the infinity speakers and they are still sounding great. I have the same 3.5s in my RAM but I used JL Audio tweeters in that install. I had one speaker go out in the mustang and had to replace, but I think that was just poor luck, All the others in the truck and car have been doing great. I did purchase the matching infinity reference 6.5s 2-ways for the doors and I don't know if they couldn't handle the power of the stock system or what, but they were completely distorted and over driven at higher volumes and sounded terrible. I put the stock ones back in and have been satisfied. You might have more luck with a component set or something with woofer only, but for me, once I swapped the other stuff out, if was right where I wanted it. You might want to check out my other video on the FORScan EQ fix, as that made a huge difference in the output too. Made it sound even better. Let me know if there are other questions, good luck!!

    You might have come out better with a 3 way speaker system to put in the doors and the 2 way 3 1/2" in the door. But with the tweeters in the A pillar, tweeters in the 3 1/2" and 6 1/2" you will have a TON of highs I imagine. With a nice 3 way system you would have the 6 1/2" for your low to midrange, the 3 1/2" for you mid to high range and the tweeters to handle the highs. Maybe if you redo it you can give that a try. Your nice three way components have a crossover that sends the exact frequency to the exact speaker in the 3 way kit. Also you might have replaced the factory center channel 3 1/2" speaker that was an 8 or 12 ohm with a 4 ohm and increasing the power to the speaker a fair amount.

  • @RaymondLamb

    @RaymondLamb

    2 жыл бұрын

    I do have a TON of highs now (probably too much), on certain sources at higher volumes the stock 6.5s in the door do seem to have some mids/bass, but still not much. It sounds great and crystal clear, but lacking in the bass department something fierce. I'm planning on adding a subwoofer at some point, but it would still be nice to get a little more mids out of what I have.

  • @chesspiece81

    @chesspiece81

    @@RaymondLamb I would leave the 3 1/2" you have and look into a nice 3 way kit. You have no shortage of tweeters between the A pillars, the center channel, and your midrange 3 1/2" in the doors. With a 3 way you would have a 6 1/2" mid bass driver a 3 1/2" or 4" midrange and the tweeters in the A pillars all crossed over so the right frequency went to the right speakers. You could also try and am the tweeters at the windshield to redirect the sound to reflect off the windshield and won't the tweeters pointed right at you. It should cut down how harsh they sound.

    @@RaymondLamb If you plan on keeping the stock amp running everything do some research on what ohm the stock speakers are. Maybe put the Infiniti coaxials you had in the video in the rear deck and get a 3 way component setup in the front doors. Then reevaluate if you need a sub. I've always treated tweeters like salt and pepper, just a light sprinkling can make the meal but over do it and the entire dish is ruined. I hope that makes sense. I'm putting together a stereo for my Yukon and I'm doing 2 sets of Polk MM 6 1/2" components in the front doors. 2 of the tweeters in the A pillars and 2 of the tweeters in the doors with some Polk MM 6 1/2" coaxials in the back doors and 2 Image Dynamic 12" subs. I can adjust the tweeters output on the crossovers, amp, and headunit. I'll run the rear doors off the head unit and the front doors off the full range channels of the amp.

    I bet that sounds great. I’m pretty happy with the infinity speakers, but trying to go with something for the rear with a little more bass. I want to do the JL Audio stealth box one day but for now I’m satisfied. You’re right though, it’s pathetic what comes stock in these things.

    And you know if they cost you 65$ that cost to make was $15 maybe. So that a car company wouldn't have these stock is insane.

    That's the truth, and when they say they have "premium" audio in these vehicles, what they put in them sometimes is a joke!

    I haven't changed it, it's still the same. I have the same 3.5s in my truck too and still really like them. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
