How do i get midi from Bassline Generator to send to a new channel with a diff vst like Juno? I've selected MIDI from "Reason Rack" and in the second drop down where it says Pre FX and Post FX, it doesn't have a "Reason Rack" option for me to select. Thank you!!!

@@OscarUnderdog Yes, i'm using the Reason VST Rack in one channel, but when I go to the new midi channel there isn't the second "Reason Rack" option in the drop down. It just says Pre FX and Post FX. Am I missing something with the way the Bassline Generator is routed in the back of Reason?! Is there a missing step where I have to route the output into a combinator or something?

@@OscarUnderdog Great video. I have been struggling for a number of hours trying to get this to work with the Ableton instruments (Anxious Woofer, a few others), Is this possible using the same technique? Similar to the above question, when I do the routing I don't have the Reason Rack option as the second dropdown. Unfortunately, also a newbie for Ableton. I've selected Reason Rack from the AU plugins. Thanks. Brian

Hey Oskar from Underdog - I've been making music for over 20 years now, very unsuccessfully I must say but with a lot of passion. I must have watched years' worth of tutorials by now mainly because it gives me the great illusion of being as good as you guys teaching us as after all it's easy straightforward when you do it. Having become a pro in tutorial watching I can confirm that you're doing e pretty f....ing respectable job with your vids. So, bottom line all this text for saying thank you and keep on publishing so that in my next life I can spend some of my 20ies and 30ies playing my own techno bangers in clubs around the globe - hopefully before we manage to burn down or suffocate this planet, but I'm diverting from the topic :-D. Cheers!

This is a great idea. I’ve used Reason since version 3 but never loved it as a standalone DAW. Always had it rewired into Ableton or Pro Tools. Never thought of using the plugin version for it’s sequencers. I have a couple of hardware sequencers (very spoiled in that regard) but even though I’m alright on keys, sequencers like what Reason has generates so many more ideas

Great video - and very nicely presented. Reason's Players are amazing. IMO, Reason's biggest selling point. The Quad Note Generator, for instance, is a noodler's dream. The flexibility to connect just about anything to these various players blows the whole thing so wide that you might never get beyond one amazing idea - this happens to me all the time. Reason just does stuff and off I go on some new unexpected musical adventure. And I'm not into EDM - my thing is ambient chill (like Wavestate's slowly evolving, dreamy, syncopated sounds). Reason+ with its suite of Players has answered my prayers. I agree - Reason Studios need to push these Players much more - and hopefully develop the possibilities for auto-generated music and beats even further. It's addictive.

Thanks for sharing the sequencing ideas…. Cadence with cord generation especially. I never thought of using scales&chords to correct the output of step sequencers following a chord progression. I always thought of it as correcting live manual recordings but I hated the one in Reason because it omits notes that define the character of certain modes. What you’ve demonstrated might be the best application for using scales&chords in Reason. I’ll be sure to plug your video in my comments during their next livestream.

Hello Oskar 👋... I started producing music with Reason and I loved the Matrix Pattern Sequencer even then. At some point I switched to Logic Pro X and when I heard that Reason instruments and effects can be used as a plugin as well as all MIDI players, I had to think simply upgrade the old license and love having this opportunity for creativity. Although Logic also has a very good step sequencer, the players in the Reason range are ingenious tools for quick results.

You can subscribe to Reason+ which gives you everything -- including the DAW and the Rack VST. You also get every plugin/device we make, including of course Bassline Generator.

@@ReasonStudios So Bass line Generator cannot be bought as one plugin/insturment only?

  • @stuartleighton

Hi, I bought Reason+ on the strength of this tutorial, and I'm loving the Bassline Generator plug-in in Ableton. I am new to using Ableton and am working through tutorials (Production Music Live and also Oscar's brilliant 'Foundations' course. I am having a problem with Baseline Generator Plug-in. If I find a bassline I like, I arm a track, hit record and then it records in Ableton, as in this tutorial. However, later on in the song I want to bring in a slight variation of the baseline. I copy it to a second channel in Reason, create the variation, and record using Ableton. The problem I am having is that, even though I am recording to a different MIDI channel in Ableton (to where the original baseline was recorded), it is overwriting the original baseline, meaning that after recording the second one I now have two baselines that are exactly the same and that are both the new variation. The original bassline that I recorded is gone in Ableton, replaced by this new variation. Can anyone explain why this has happened and how I can avoid this so that I can record multiple variations of the same basslines (using Reason Baseline Generator) in Ableton without them overwriting each other? Much appreciated, and sorry if this is confusing.

Is what you're referring to maybe abletons "overdub" setting? Double check that first! Otherwise just copy the 1st clip to a safe place somewhere to the right of your composition...

after watching the Reason Channel on this, its not bad, but the biggest issue for me is that it only has 128 on and 128 offbeat patterns (which u can alter almost infinitely) I have a better option: Using an independent sequencer (I LOVE Hy-Plugins HySeq32 vst, which is free and has a random option, which makes literally infinite basslines. Also, it has midi controls which u can assign to the CC of ur synth to further sculpt the sound dynamically, say to a filter or to some effects. It's way better if u ask me, and u can use it in reason, or in ur fav DAW. EDIT: there's two versions of HYSEQ32, one is free one is paid. both are incredible vst sequencers. the free version is almost beyond perfect for basslines because its ur bass line doesn't need to be *that* involved, but still, HYSEQ32 gives u MORE than this Reason basslines generator.

@@bigmamashouse what i do is set my scale ( that's built in the sequencer, so u don't have to use an external scale tool, +1 for hyseq32!) Randomize my bass notes, length, probability, octave and velocity, also tie and mute functions, all built into the sequencer, then set my playing rate, 1/8 or 16ths. Then randomize. Let it run for a few bars, recording the midi it spits out, boom. Now I just set a bar or two and try out the resulting baselines with my beats. I can do this all day. And don't forget about the CC it can spit out with its lfos, it has two of them, crazy. Assign them to anything on ur bass synth or even to the controls on ur sequencer Did i mentiom it's fucking free????
