Infectious disease epidemiologist answers questions about coronavirus COVID-19

John Sinnott, MD, is a USF Health Infectious Disease Epidemiologist. He answers your questions about coronavirus COVID-19.
Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, coughing and shortness of breath. They may appear in as few as two days or as many as 14 days. Most people recover, although older people and individuals with underlying medical conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes are at a greater risk of developing a more serious illness.
There isn't yet a vaccine for preventing COVID-19, so the best way to stay healthy is to limit your risk of being exposed to it.
To stay safe from the coronavirus, health experts say you should wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60-percent alcohol. Avoid close contact with people who are sick, and stay home when you are sick.
The CDC does not recommend healthy people without symptoms wear facemasks. Those should be reserved for people with symptoms -- to help stop them from spreading it to other people. They should also be used by health care workers, as necessary.
Coronavirus is a family of viruses commonly found in a number of animals, including bats, camels, cats and cattle. Sometimes, though not often, according to the CDC, coronaviruses can spread from animals to humans. Other examples of this include SARS and MERS.
These diseases cause everything from the common cold to pneumonia and more serious respiratory issues.

    That is a bullshìt answer. This guy is lying or has no idea about the Corona virus, the CDC or anything else he's talking about. Experience doesn't equal honesty, knowledge or intelligence. The CDC did not have bad luck and it was not a lack of funding. They bungled the job. Their job was to get a test for the Wuhan Chinese Corona Virus to market fast. There was already a model to follow but they decided to get cocky and make it also a test for SARS and MERS and they botched it. Their process took longer, cost more and most importantly, it didn't work. It had nothing whatsoever to do with luck. Nor did it have anything to do with Trump or budget. www.propublica.org/article/cdc-coronavirus-covid-19-test So, if you're going to bald face liem you're going to have to remember this is the information age and someone is going to call you out. If you don't know this information then why does anyone care what you say. Furthermore, the CDCs budget has not been cut. There was a proposal to lower it for 2021 to add funds to the opioid crisis and have chronic diseases handled more at the state level so the CDC could focus on things like pandemics. www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-cut-cdc-budget/ This guy doesn't even have a firm grasp of the English language, "Even after you're feel better..."

    *Thanks. Help me here.* With some research into *Streptococcus pneumoniae.* The first point off contact off those virus droplets is the throat( bronchioles )...and then the lung. So I looked up strep-throat.( Sore throat ) When the strep-throat has a complication, scarlet fever is formed....and in rare cases pnemonia is that outcome. So I'm thinking 🤔, why treat the harder problem at the lungs with the ACE2 receptors. ...when maybe, just maybe an oral treatment for the throat might help? NB: there over 500 microbes on the throat/mouth. *Streptococcus pneumoniae has the ability to produce hydrogen peroxide as an inhibitor [E4]. ...and maybe, this hydrogen peroxide, is stopping the virus in children? I dont know, there's too much to read.

  • @caib714

    @caib714

    You misunderstood him. Old people with any infection that end up in hospital often get secondary infections from other opportunistic pathogens like the bacterial pneumonia that will kill them. That's why sometimes they get antibiotics for a flu, to prevent bacterial infections that come when your immune system resources get too exhausted to cover other bugs. The hospitals are breeding ground for superbugs if not properly sanitized.

I do not remember seeing someone of 40-45 years old with a real chance to win. Old age health problems, especially neurological ones are a big issue. So why a president of 75 or 80 years old? Why not someone of 40-50 Years old? Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden...( I am talking about real candidates of the last years and not the ones with 1% chances to win because they are just rabbits). Just asking...

    Not really. No, it doesn't put anyone at risk. Whether it was made in a lab or came from eating raw bat soup will have exactly zero different affect on your health. If you get it now, where it came from is not going to make a difference to your lungs.

    Actually, there is evidence that it was created in the lab but like everything from China, who knows but here's some a woman using her real name claims animals from the lab were sold at the wet market. kzread.info/dash/bejne/n5ybmqOSoru3iLQ.html Additionally, scientists at the S China Institute of technology say the virus appears to be bioengineered.
