We have many campers and sold them all and went for a pop up. We love it! Fold it up and store it anywhere, no need to winterize. We also removed the stove, but we then removed the entire box with sink and all. Also removed the tables...much more room. We cook and eat outside ( unless it rains then we have a microwave and a fold up tv table inside). Just the hubby and I so it works the best for us. Might have to add that toilet tho 😉

This guy is so thorough! I bought my Jayco in 2008 and it sits never used and never modded/repaired because my husband hasn't taken the time. Awesome video of my camper dream.

Some good improvements, especially the commode. My 2001 Coleman Popup has a small, metal step just like yours, under-capacity and dangerously slippery. Mine was also wearing out the pivot point and was causing that side of the trailer to flex too much every time the step was used. To help correct this I just placed two, 2"x 4" pieces of wood under the step to help reinforce it and put the downward force directly to the ground. This worked OK for a about a day as the wood either fell over or was too sloppy. To permanently fix this I used two, large 4" turn buckles. Drilled a hole in the step on either side rear of step and secured the top threads with a lock nut below and above top end. The bottom end had the threaded round eye which is easily adjustable on to a flat scrap of 1" wood to spread the force. Its now solid as a rock and stays that way for as long as I camp which is for weeks sometimes. If it gets sloppy, it merely takes a tiny hand adjustment of the buckle. These two adjustable step supports easily detach and store inside. I should probably market these as a fix-kit for a common problem with these flimsy metal steps.

Love your mods. Another cheap expensive tip. We line our emergency mylar blankets inside the lining of the windows/screens of our popup. Put one in each window/screen area. A pack of 10 runs 8-10 bucks on Amazon. For sunny sites, it worked wonders in the summer and kept our pop up much cooler to a pleasant level. Even with A/C our camper couldn't keep it cool enough until we used the mylar blankets. We also put them over the bunks on the outside (like you did) and attached with metal office clips. They were cheap and saved us while we camped in Williamsburg at a site that got sun from sunrise to sunset in the middle of July. We even used the mylar blankets on the sides of our coleman canopy to block out sun. When one side no longer needed it, we just rolled it up and clipped it to the roof, and let the other side down which blocked the afternoon sun. We may have looked like a Lunar lander but we were cool and happy and couldn't have enjoyed our trip without those 10 dollar blankets (and about 8 bucks in office clips). Another storage tip: We took bungie cords and hooked them to on the roof side edges. Those remain in our camper hooked. Then when we setup , we hang from the bungies, over-the-door coat racks and closet hanging storage shelves to store folded clothing and hang backpacks. I can't tell you how much of a difference this made in storage of clothing, hats, backpacks. Camp on and thanks for your tips as well.

We recently traded up from our Viking Pop-up but when we had it we had cut some silver bubble wrap to fit into the windows. Between that and the reflective tent covers you showed it made a huge difference in the winter and summer. (it does make it much darker in the trailer however. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your journeys.

I'm very excited about your modifications. I am going to try the storage one you suggested next to the smaller bunk, our daughter is only 4 and I think she would like an extra step up. I'm not sure we could fit in a port-a-potty but I think it would be nice to try. I think the video was wonderful, well made and I love how you showed the easy ones at the beginning. You definitely took a second hand pop-up and made it work for you! I get the thing about cooking inside, ours has a hook outside for hanging the stove so we don't have to cook indoors and heat up that small space. Thank you for taking the time to make it.

We purchased a Luggable Loo for our popup. Double garbage bag the inside, add two inches of kitty litter, fit the seat over the top of the bags tight so they are not drooping into the inside. If using it for #1 it will last a few days without a smell. #2-change daily. To empty pull the top bag out (check to see if it is leaking and if it is pull both bags out). Empty in a camp garbage container.

I’m gobsmacked by your reference to 3 way fridges.... “...you know how unreliable they are. Cooling depends on how warm it is outside.” I couldn’t disagree more. Here in Australia it is extremely hot in Summer (often above 45ºc) with low humidity in the south and in the north extremely hot with high humidity. My Jayco pop up caravan has never had a problem with keeping the contents cold and the small freezer section, keeping things frozen, while running on gas. When using 12v while driving the wiring is not good enough to carry the amperage from the car so it is a simple fix to using thicker wire from the fridge to the car connection, this massively increases the fridge’s effectiveness. On 240v or mains power no weather events seem to alter the fridge’s internal temp. Essential tips for keeping cold a 3 way fridge: The site must be level or the efficiency is affected and more so when using gas. Upgrade the power and earth wire from the fridge to your aux battery, this is a no brainer for those who know how to crimp or solder. Preferably park so the fridge side is away from the sun. I don’t know how many times I have frozen the entire contents of the fridge by forgetting to turn the dial down at night whilst using gas.

Ours came with most of the things you added, like portapotty and pricacy curtains. We never had issues with our three way refrigerator, we did find it worked best on electric and propane. 12 volt was a joke so we only used it to maintain cold when we travelled between sites. We srldom went camping where there wasnt electricity so that was never an issue. We had a furnace in ours so we could start our season early and camp later. I see where someone uses the bubble insulation in the window areas, that would help retain heat at night. Especially where we live. Camping in mid October brought is Snow this year. Earliest ever.

Apparently, End cap rain flys are a thing in the UK on pop up campers. I have decided that this would be a great idea as I hate getting my hands dirty pushing the end caps back up inside the camper after the weekend. It would be nice just to untie those reflective covers and fold and put them in bags, then take them out at home and hose them off. No dirty , sooty filthy hands or end caps getting the end bunks dirty eather.

Our trailer came with a slot that allowed you to bring the inside table out. But then you didn't have one inside. We found a trailer for junk and put one for each. I also found a plastic table with removable legs, which you could put anywhere and storage was a snap. Love the step to the bunkend for storage. Had two shelties and a collie. The table bed was for the dogs, but the shelties usually sneaked onto our bunk.

We are looking to get a popup and we are sure it will need quite a bit of work. You have given Scott and I some pretty great ideas. Thanks for a video well done! Ren

I have a 1997 Jayco 1005, that I have been modifying here and there, I like how you did the porta potty, I took out my ice box and was using mine porta potty there and then pull it out at night, but I am going to set mine up like yours, Thanks for the idea

Awesome mods. We've got an '09 Jayco 1207 that we've modded some, mainly expandable shelving and storage, but your stuff is a cut above. I'm really interested in those LED lights. Also, I wasn't aware of problems with three-way fridges. Ours seems to work well in any weather. If it starts failing, at least now I know what I can do about it. Thanks!

These are all nice mods based on personal use preferences, which is clearly pointed out at the beginning. Stuff like the power strip, duh, I've never thought of that. The toilet mod is pretty involved. We simply use Luggable Loo for her (which resides outside during the day) and I use a post surgery urine bottle. I just empty them in the morning at the campground bathroom. (#2 you're taking the walk at night.)

Thanks for the comment. It went in and secured very easy. The front feet of the Mini-fridge set right behind the cabinet molding and keep it from moving forward. The photo you see with compressor, you notice a wood backstop behind the fridge that keeps it from moving backwards. In the next photo it shows a piece of cut 2X4 that is wedged between the top of the fridge and the counter top. It fit perfectly with no additional work and the fridge is rock solid.

For a toilet i use a pop-up privacy tent by the camper not far. With a coleman Gas Lantern(Burns 8 to 10 Hours) for outside light.
