Inequality, race and pseudoscience - Faiza Shaheen and Adam Rutherford (P1) | Studio B: Unscripted

Adam Rutherford is a geneticist and author. In his latest book, How to Argue with a Racist, he provides the tools to dismantle the myth of biological race.
Faiza Shaheen is an economist, activist and one-time candidate for the Labour Party, United Kingdom. Using statistics, she exposes how class, gender and racial prejudice are institutionalised in our economies.
In this episode, Adam and Faiza discuss how to combat racism in their respective fields of genetics and economics. They also examine the legacy of empire and how this has affected notions of identity and belonging at a time of polarisation and distrust.

The human genome clusters. The clusters correspond to what are traditionally called 'races'. Quote from David Reich in the New York Times. “Groundbreaking advances in DNA sequencing technology have been made over the last two decades. These advances enable us to measure with exquisite accuracy what fraction of an individual’s genetic ancestry traces back to, say, West Africa 500 years ago - before the mixing in the Americas of the West African and European gene pools that were almost completely isolated for the last 70,000 years. With the help of these tools, we are learning that while race may be a social construct, differences in genetic ancestry that happen to correlate to many of today’s racial constructs are real.” What does 'real' mean? Something reality to 'reality'. That could not possibly be true.

There’s a very good way of avoiding racial prejudice: living in a state populated by people of your own nation so you don’t have to live around people who are prejudiced against you, whether by race, or religion, or language. Instead of constantly fearing being discriminated against, you can enjoy being among people like you.

@@roising.3221 You see, if you're an Irishman and claim that you're an Englishman, you could (relatively) easily blend in an English society, if you wanted to, because of how you look. But I, for example, couldn't, even if I wanted to, also because of how I look. All the other things (religion, language etc) can easily be changed. As for A. Rutherford, he, in my opinion, would never suit into any society

Racism was used to justify and cover an evil part of one's character flaw. That character flaw of not being quite good enough puts one at odds within himself to push against others to justify one's false sense of superiority which was simply to fight one's deep knowledge that he/she is simply just another person no better or worse than any other.

God destroys those who think they are superior to others. On the day of judgement we will compare those who push people down into poverty and ignorance with those who pull people up and enlighten them. We all recieved what our own hands and lips put forth.

Racism and discrimination has always existed throughout history, you just need to go deeper to find it. If you are raised with a good upbringing then you won’t be a racist. Your lineage, bloodline, and bravery of the tribe, clan described the family you came from, and that was enough to determine your behaviour and character. Back in history a mothers good character was extremely important to raise a good human being. Nowadays people know nothing of their family history.

Racism is real, but race is not. There is no such thing as biological race according to science. Racists believe race is real and then act on that false belief. Therefore, identity politics promotes racism. In contrast, I promote humanism - the scientific reality that humanity is a continuum of physical variation and the political approach that we all have universal human rights that should be respected regardless of that variation.
