IndyCar: Robin Miller on Parnelli Jones

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Winning Indianapolis one time and five other Champ Car races in eight years are hardly Hall of Fame statistics but numbers never did justice to Rufus Parnelli Jones.
The 1963 Indy 500 winner is regarded as one of the best and most versatile drivers EVER -- by rivals, chief mechanics and just about anyone lucky enough to watch him in a midget sprinter, roadster, dirt car, sports car, stock car, Trans Am or at Baja. He won in every category except Formula One, where he never competed but turned down Colin Chapman's offer to be the team's B driver.
Rufus thrived and survived in open wheel racing's deadliest era and never spent one night in the hospital.
In his seven starts at Indianapolis, he led 492 laps and could have easily won five of them with a little bit of luck. A.J. Watson said he was the best that ever drove at Indy and Jones' performances make a pretty good argument.
He's one of those legends that don't need a last name: A.J. Mario and Parnelli.

lived in Indy for 20 years. Crossed paths with you at UJ's in the early 90's. You're a good guy. My Sprint Car career only lasted one season.

I was a bratty kid, but my Dad loved me enough to take me to USAC races back when AJ, Parnelli, and Mario were duking it out in stock cars, sprints and champ dirt cars. Went to Indy time trials a few times too. Lucky kid.

Jim, you were a very lucky kid with a great father. With your dad, you got to witness the "Truly Golden Era" of American Open Wheel Racing. Those are memories that will last a lifetime!

At Indy, every driver that adopted Parnelli's line went faster. Their problem was that trying to be as smooth and flowing as Parnelli was really difficult.

It's the night before the 2022 500 and after 37 years I was finally able to get to the Speedway last Sunday for Scott's pole run! Wish you could've been there to see it. Rest in peace, Robin.

Great work Robin! Yeah! The stats on Parnelli at the 500 are nothing short of "unbelievable!" As I am sure some may know he credits Jim Hurtubise as the one who showed him how to really get the most out of roadster. You gotta believe some of that rubbed on the rear engine machines as well.

Irony: Jim Clark was runner up to Parnelli Jones in 1963. Two years later, Parnelli was runner up to Clark.

Parnelli had such horrible luck at IMS for somebody who actually won the Indy 500; only Tony Kanaan can approach him in that regard, at least in my lifetime.
