Ah, this is cool, I was the programmer on the simulation and controls for this game... I remember fighting with the art team on not overdoing the front-wheel angle (still looks weird for me), I had to add a 10x multiplier to the object-angle compared to the simulation angle. Each tire has its surface and constraint computation and the resulting forces on the body determine direction and shearing forces (which also drives the spinning action). I even got a patent in Tokyo on the suspension simulations. I also remember implementing the slipstream computations that you see when the car speeds up behind an other car. There were originally 2 easter eggs in this game, if you drove up the pit from the other side and stopped at the splitting fence, pushing both brake and accel displayed a hidden message. The other one was while driving at least 300km/h and suddenly break+accel+all view buttons, the car shook, the tires turned inward and you had 10m seconds of flight at 600km/h "Back To The Future" style... Unfortunately the latter easter egg was discovered too early (during location testings) and I got a fare amount of heat for it... ;-)

Lol I won a couple contests with this as a kid and got a sweet ass Indy 500 leather jacket. I totally forgot about how sawing the wheel was the fastest way back then.

Its true with the wheel angle, you should have won that particular fight. Besides that an absolute incredible Job in Feel and Artwork for this Game. Absolute masterpiece in the Racing Game genre And way beyond its years at that time in history. You look at it now and it still looks good after all these years its timeless. that takes a special team to acomplish that. What other titles did you work on?

I was undefeated at this game at the "Game Works" that was located in the Easton mall, good times.

Gameworks Seattle had 10 of these linked in arcade with rumble seats. That was a great birthday party, playing this game against 6 friends and some strangers.

I played this a lot in the arcade but back then, I was a little kid who didn't know about slipstreaming so I always got stuck in 2nd place.

Indy 500 the game was also produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi, who also behind Daytona USA, another Sega arcade racing game based on another major American racing event which is NASCAR.

The way to set a really fast time on this track is to both slipstream every car AND touch your rear wheel to the front wheel of every car you're passing, as this gives a speed boost.

I had really fun playing Indy 500 at the Tilt Studio Arcade and never brought to home console

It all started on ABC for the Indianapolis 500.

I would like to see you do this again with the Pace Car. I heard that to unlock it, hold down brake while selecting transmission and don't let go until the race has begun

This actually works, but there's a little bit more to it than you described. At the transmission screen you need to hold brake and "zoom out" while using the start button to make your choice. I'll probably post a video of the pace car in action sometime this weekend for ya.

I can do the Endurance mode with whatever the maximum amount of laps available. I do not know it is 40 laps maximum?

I wish it was on the saturn. then I would search tireless to find a saturn and the game

Sega had a choice of porting this, or remaking Daytona with Championship Cirtuit Edition. I think we lost out there.

hey I've got a question because I can't seem to find an answer anywhere..., how come do you get so many lapped cars during the final laps? every single race that I'm playing has all 33 cars together and none of them gets lapped, which makes getting 1st place harder I wonder if we are playing a different revision of the game, I'm using the default indy500.zip (Rev A, Twin, Newer rev)

I wonder if this was made by the Daytona USA Team, getting big vibes from it

It was created from AM2 so yeah.

A shame there wasn't a home console version, or even if it was released on the vitual console, that'd be good too. Only difference being mainly choosing your own racer for the hell of it.

It's a pity that this game never came out on the sega saturn. At least there is F1 Challenge on the saturn which is pretty good.

Never mind. Their ultimate short-brain idea is try to swap between the grey tigers and the white knights. Just let it be and temporary ignored.
