Industrializing the moon is our best bet. The earth wouldn't get polluted nearly as much and all of the toxic waste is left on the moon. Also, all of the CO2 emissions emitted by factories on the moon would help to create an atmosphere that we could use as leverage in terraforming it to become habitable.

Gravity on the Moon is pretty low for retaining an atmosphere, but putting a robotic/telepresence factory complex on the Moon would allow us to mine it and build space infrastructure and materials without having to boost the materials out of Earth's gravity well. Cool.

What many people forget: the moon is aside from other benefits, a perfect PRACTISE to colonize other worlds. Making a mistake on moon isnt so bad than on say Europa or Mars

Being only light seconds away is huge. Also, establishing a base on the moon makes it possible to get help and supplies to mars much easier to respond to than trying to launch from earth. Also, before anyone arrives at Mars, we can turn the landing pad on Mars into an IKEA waiting for the astronauts to show up with the screw driver and hammer. On the moon we can also grow food in the lava tubes and light them with artificial lighting, raise chickens and turkeys and with that much water, we could pond raise fish and crustaceans, as well as grains and cereals. Any pound of food you raise on the Moon is a major savings. We must remember that the surface of the moon is a shooting gallery and the risk of solar flair radiation is ever present. This is why we have to live and farm under the surface. The dust on the moon is an interesting threat and blessing. The dust gets everywhere and ruins couplings and pivots, but I understand that if you hit the dust with microwaves you can get the dust to anneal to form a crust. It may be a quick way to make paved roads and maybe glass bricks. Or just a way to keep the dust at bay around the base. There is no atmosphere, but there are multiple impacts a day from meteors coming in at ballistic speeds that will throw up the dust to settle everywhere.

Also making glass windows in a an oxygen free atmosphere makes it extremely strong, close to steel but transparent. Could easily make metallic glass structures for different applications, from space craft to buildings components.

I know its an old comment but I was hoping more on the uranium that exists on the moon that could be enriched enough to fuel fission drives. Basically build and test the fission rocket on earth then send that rocket to lunar orbit empty where we refuel it around the moon then we use that rocket as a freighter to take us anywhere in the solar system.

Well, Its not a small endeavour, but its a nessesary steping stone for the simple fact that the mood is by far the best refueling station and spacecraft manufacturing site in our area. You have ICE to make fuel, low gravity to build massive constructs, no atmosphere to hamper you in sending things in orbit, and rare materials that are nessesary for any high tech construct. Yes, we CAN colonize mars without the moon, but the simple fact that the moon is the perfect spot to refuel a starship, or build killometer long solar reflectors to power up the earth/other planets or even begin the terraforming process of mars (using the reflectors to help heat up the surface, and power up the gigantic magnetic field generators needed to shield mars from the solar wind), it makes the moon a crucial asset to have on hand during ANY expansion and exploitation plan.

Also getting a stable colony going on the moon is a great start so that we can prepare Mars for the astronauts before they get there. We can prepare a lot of habitat materials ready to be unpacked and assembled. Settle the moon and turn Mars into a ready IKEA.

My Jeb started a fuel mining company on the Mun with a gas station on the Mun's orbit. It gives quite a big difference, but only in Mun exploration expeditions. In case of interplanetary trips, I found that only rendezvous of a tanker and a ship on highly elliptical orbit make any sense, but it also took a lot of time. Delivering the fuel by a single stage vehicle to the most desired LKO is very inefficient even using aero breaking - rather a not desirable maneuver in the real word. I used only chemical rockets to simulate the current technology status. Nuclear engine also didn't change a lot the situation, the number of deliveries to return the investment was crazy high. It was inspired by this film OFC.

I think we are more like students learning new technologies that will be a boon to the people of earth and a stepping stone for the people who will go to Mars. Much easier to build the Mars ship at one of the Lagrange points and do a push off rather than a launch out of a deep gravity well.

Other countries wanted to be the first on the moon so that pushed USA. Now China wants to have the first base on the moon. Their is one issue there think China does not see. Russia and USA see it you can easily just put a base on the moon but does it pay for itself or is it just going to be more wasted tax dollars? So getting a base there without having sustained income now you have a base that will fall into disrepair when the first major economy krysis hits. USA was smart by getting companies involved to think and develop the other infrastructures processes that will be needed if you want the base to pay for itself. Plus think things have been on hold till they develop a fusion reaction that can be contained. What is the point of getting H3 for electricity if you can not use it yet? One element that will be a vital key to moon base profitability. As other minerals costs more and more to mine we will eventually meet a threshold where it will be cheaper to go to the moon and mine and then send the material back to earth. While at the same time saving our limited supply of clean drinking water that we have on this planet. But their is one factor all countries should be looking at right now is the cost of green house gases versus human health. If we can do more of this stuff on the moon limiting the CO2 emissions then that could have a mass savings when it comes to human health or even all life health for that matter.

If we took the entire budget of all the militaries in the world and committed it to the moon we would be there and colonized in less than 5 yesrs

There's more hard knowledge in any 5 minutes of one of these videos, than there is in whole, hour or more long "shows" on the supposed "learning" channels (e.g. Discovery, etc.)

Put a bank on the moon and a hallway of PO boxes so you can use it as a tax shelter. There's a step 2.

Really enjoy these talks. I hope future generation can watch these episodes the same way we read Jules Verne and say "That guy had it figured out."

I have to say: What an extraordinary channel this is. Mr Arthur is opening up a consciousness that is mostly closed for most people due to lack of imagination. Those that are listening to this and Mr. Authur himself are inviting a new conversation that needs to happen in this generation. If enough people are thinking about these future problems then these problems won’t be future but will be the present faster than we think. The questions we ask tell us who we are. Even is there isn’t an answer.

I've been waiting for this to happen since the 70s. We are barely closer to colonizing the moon now then we where in the 80's. I was so certain as a young man in the 80's that by 2020-2030 we would have colonies living full time on the moon. Now I just hope that we can start making better headway toward it.

Solar craft would be constructed of non-magnetic materials, except for the floors. Passengers would wear magnetic suits and boots to pull them to the floor approximating earths gravity. I think that a 'Babylon 5' type rotating cylinder ship would be better. Also, it would be better to build a '2001 Space Odyssey' space station orbiting Earth wear humans can manage and maintain robots which build on the low gravity moon. Humans must have gravity.

ginbelg1 I agree. He improved my knowledge of helicopter control systems, which I didn't think was possible, considering I've already taught myself on the subject via books and flying in flight sims. I wouldn't label that kind of content as 'lacking depth'. He even did his own experiments and demonstrations on the subject.

AstroFocus Indeed. Arthur makes great videos that are informative and give some insight into the possible shape of things to come. Sometimes I just want to throw up my hands and shout, "why aren't we doing this now?". I just hope I live long enough to see some of it. Hopefully with the likes of Space X spearheading a path into space we can start doing some of these things sooner rather than later.

6:06 were its a great place to to manufacturing... you can smelt all the iron you want in solar furnaces with no oxygen to interfere...

Most of the oxygen in smelting comes from the ore itself. It is released from the ore through the process of pyrolysis. Large amounts of oxygen are a byproduct of smelting on earth, and that will be the case on the moon also.

@@firefox5926 You are correct about that. Working from ingots will not have a tendency to oxidize unless O2 is introduced intentionally. The vacuum environment allows for a much more effectively controlled environment during many industrial processes. Including processes that require the introduction of materials which would oxidize in a terrestrial atmosphere.

Quoting South Park underpants gnomes episode - I love it!

Much as I enjoy Isaac Arthur videos, and I do appreciate they deal with higher concepts rather than achievable shorter term realities, whenever he's discussing the more obtainable things like on this video, I spend my whole time thinking "supply chain". Even with a decent sized moon installation, you still can't just fabricate and build everything on the moon just like that. The sheer amount of production plant for all the things you'd need for even what we'd consider mundane technology would run into the hundreds of thousands of tonnes and such diverse material requirements it's crazy. You can't just say "3D printing" and all of that goes away. Smelting iron on the moon (though still very difficult) or making the lunar equivalent of a concrete block, or making fuel - yes, only a few tens of billions of dollars and a few hundred tonnes of plant required to make that happen. Making a component that requires a hundred different sub-components and THEIR sub-components using a total of hundreds of different materials all created using thousands of different processes, with each and every process, however simple, potentially requiring tonnes of unique production plant, means you are needing a city sized installation before you can even make a clock radio, let alone a spaceship. Globalisation alone makes our technological lifestyles possible, and a production-level moon base still requires all that globalisation, with the moon's link to it being by way of a prohibitively expensive Saturn V equivalent. This is why we don't live on the Moon, simple as that.

You take it one step of a time, there is no magic hand-waving. Up until recently everything had halted. Now private industry is looking to do the heavy lifting for completely different reasons that don't involve a cold war.

How in the world do you put these videos out every week? I happen to know for a fact that it takes a gargantuan amount of work and time to put out edited videos like these (that's not including the script, research, gathering footage, etc). So either you spend almost every waking hour working on these, are one of the most amazing video editors to ever exist, or more likely a combination of the two. However it truly is, excellent work.

Personally I think the moon would be a learning and development curve for us before going to Mars. Perfect tech on the moon the use it in on Mars tried and tested. Plus the moon then is usable as the space gateway instead of building one in orbit of the earth. It would have most of what we need to build with and it has a lot less gravity than earth so obviously would need a lot less fuel than an earth launch. It's a sensible direction why waist money on something that would be made obsolete by technology over the decades after its completion. The moon base would be upgradable and large enough to make great real estate for industrial/colonisation which would relieve the earth of overpopulation. From there to Mars then we have a true multi planetary race which is virtually impossible to wipe out even by natures standards. Great vids Isaac really enjoy your work thanks

Arthur, you've made the only compelling argument I've seen for going to the moon beside the scientific research. Although, I still think the idea that we need to go to the moon to get to Mars is idiotic.

the saddest part of the episode is the - how many non-scientific reasons to go to the moon he has skipped ))) Moon offers a lot of practical reason to be a manufacturing base, which can benefit to the people on Earth and climate on the planet, or workplaces (teleoperating, moon minecraft MMORPG, stations, satellites, solar collectors in Lagrange points, enormous data centers, cheap energy(not on the moon, but in space), etc) However, Mars offers a possible answer about life origin or early stage of developing the life and it is a very important possibility.

Pretty sure the Moon is a much better choice for a permanent colony than Mars. A Moon colony seems economically viable while I don't see that for Mars. People often forget that humans don't go to live somewhere because they can but because there's something in it for them.

Mars and any other body in solar system can be economically viable, not the point of the video. Ruch to mars, just cuz we can - yep, a bit questionable "plan", however, it does not mean it should fail.

Not even Antarctica is economically viable. We only have a base there for science. A body that is more expensive to live on and _much_ more expensive to get to and from? I don't see it. What's their product? What's their USP? What's so much cheaper to make or dig up on Mars that it's worth the cost? I think you might be confusing the possibility to be self-sustaining with the ability to be economically viable. Remember all those cultures that were self-sustaining before the Europeans came and made them poor? Sure, they were exploited and everything but they were also suddenly exposed to a global marketplace. If you can't keep up, that makes you poor. Or in other words, not economically viable. Mars would be poor. Until the Earth explodes, any ability to be self-sustaining doesn't help Mars one bit to avoid that fate. The only thing that might save them is that they might be _so_ hard to get to, that they are basically isolated. Then they can do their own thing and technologically fall behind Earth in relative peace.

+Penny Lane - the top few meters of lunar soil alone is worth more than all previous human economic activity combined. It's actually worth more than the whole Earth, in terms of raw materials, since more of it is more accessible. (It's geologically mostly dead and cold, most of Earth is too hot to dig in.) Once the infrastructure is built, manufacturing and agriculture in space will be much, much, much cheaper, safer, greener and more sustainable than doing it on Earth.

I really don't think it is at the moment. You've got to transport everything up there, you've got to build every square meter of real estate, you've got no free rock you can use for radiation shielding and most importantly, you've got no natural resources. I'd say you _need_ a Moon base before you can even think about building rotating habitats. You don't want to hurl all the building materials up there from Earth.

Reasons for space colonization on an industrial scale: *Consistent, cheap Solar power* -Living space for th- -Our manifest de- -The promised land for God's ch- -Deus V- *Places to live that don't involve deporting or exterminating for the locals* *Building massive zero-Gee structures* *Ultra-Cheap mining.*

I love these videos. We live in such a vast universe, it would be nice to explore even a small part of it. I am hoping that colonizing the moon and mars will lead to cheaper and faster methods of traveling through space. Plus I like the idea of terraforming other worlds.

Must admit this is a very interesting and thought provoking video for space travel, long time living, terraforming and mining mineral/precious metals on both inner and outer planets or moons/asteroids. Very well explained even for some one who has not even thought of any of this, also to those of us that have wondered about how/where or why concerning space travel and colonising other worlds.

+pumpuppthevolume - fuel is no problem. There's some water on the moon, and water is unrefined, high grade rocket fuel. Plenty of air, water and rocket fuel up there, trapped in the surface gravel and especially in polar craters.

You won't need much fuel. A space elevator on the Moon is much easier than on Earth. Even if you used rockets, you could also use skyhooks.

This topic has taken up a lot of my meager brain function lately. The moon is real estate. Location Location Location! First we need to send a scout/survey team to find the easiest and most lucrative mining sites, check out those lava tubes with the engineering of habitats in mind, and then design the equipment needed in the moon environment for a small-scale metals foundry. Getting the equipment designed, built, and sent to the moon will be VERY EXPENSIVE even at small scale, but once creating the materials needed is possible on the moon larger scale operations could be created on site. Some of the high-end materials mined and refined on the moon would be sent to Earth to defray the costs of supplies sent to the moon. (Gonna need two-way transportation). Running a remote controlled payloader or bulldozer from a pressurized dome sounds like fun to me, especially with travel and hazard pay. Finding a nickle-iron asteroid in a crater with a large lava tube nearby would be like striking gold. Developing new alloys in the low gravity and near vacuum of the moon is a strong possibility. There are so many possibilities for paying for the project, we just need the initial capital to get started. Another thought: What the survey team finds may draw in large private investments in the project. I worked R&D most of my life, if I were younger I'd go in a heartbeat.
