I can remember when 12 and 22 both were 35 for 30 lb jug. I also remember back in the day never used scales. It was amazing some guys would get 50 to 60 lbs out of a 30 lb jug. They called them miracle jugs.😅

99% of the time I used my scab tank of 22 to blow drain lines,, rarely fresh clean virgin 22 but it was ALWAYS 22... lol @@subcoolHVAC

Sure reminds me of a Dunham-Bush big 4 glycol chiller I used to work on all the time, it too was an R22 machine. The chilled glycol was used to cool a gas flow

Changing fan bearings on those machines is a blast.

Gotta love that old equipment. You ever consider getting a gasket cutter for flange gaskets?! As an ammonia tech, I swore by that tool. Saved my ass plenty. One of the most valuable gadgets you can buy, aside from that Stratus.

Pneumatic transmitter in each discharge duct should be reading air temperatures… if the controls work I guess 😂😂😂. Ground my teeth down to nubs on that stuff for the last 26 years. Keep up the good work

I worked on one of these giant Trane 8-cylinder used in a chiller recently. Sadly the building manager wants to replace it this year with a new R290 chiller. I would normally support this 100% but I’d hate to see a old beauty like this getting trashed.

Pretty amazing the variety of stuff you lot work on . Sometimes i wish i could diversify a bit . For some reason i canalmost never stop a leak by tightening them bolts , i always have to replace the gasket , even had to have one custom made ...

I wish now I could have made the expo this year. Could have run into you. Maybe be able to get to the next one. I have a hot deck cold deck system where I work and thankfully we converted the old pneumatics over to digital several years ago. Way les headaches. It also uses chilled water from the house system for the cold deck. Another plus in my opinion. Great video! Thanks for sharing.

Looks about 40 years old, eh? The cap is such a simple thing, protection for the stem. Used to work at a place where the students(inmates) would huff the refrigerant from the systems. Brain vitamins. 🤣🤣🤣

I use to work on a lot of this old stuff 😶‍🌫️try and put a balloon or rubber glove over that relief valve with a nylon tie and see if it leaks they won’t even allow those once through water converters in my part of country but what do they expect the customer to do $$$ ❤

Another thing you can do is put silicone on it, you’ll know it blew out if it goes off.

I think Untied sells replacement caps for that valve leaking. Other than that, its a beast of a machine. Needs to be retired.

That pneumatic stuff is usually pretty reliable. Thermostats are probably the most common thing I replace, and an occasional actuator diaphragm.

Recalibrate the t-stats DA or RA. Volume controllers....i still enjoy working on pneumatic systems.

@@jasonjohnsonHVAC the ones where I work have all been switched to electric dampers with thermistors everywhere that report to BMS. Problem after problem, everyday. We used to have direct acting Johnson controls tstats. There were several that were still original from the early 80s...actuators too.

Intimidating equipment there.

Hot deck cold deck isn't like VAV, it is constant volume. That is stock Trane condensing unit. Why doesn't customer want system fixed? All those pneumatic controls can easily be verified, simply start checking inputs from transmitters. They can be calibrated or replaced. The Barber Coleman receiver controllers can also be calibrated or replaced. Just like DDC except it's air signal, not a voltage single.

A good portion of the people that watch my stuff don’t really understand the difference between either one of of those items (whether it’s a VAV or a hot deck cold deck) and I believe I said it’s similar not that they’re exactly the same. Addressing the question that was asked, why does the customer not want to replace it or do maintenance on it? that’s not for me to decide, all I know is they’ve been given the opportunity and they choose not to do it. This is a factory that’s been there for a long time that just keeps milking things along and does not put any money into anything,

looked easier to find where it wasn't leaking... 🤣

We haven't been allowed to refill R22 since 1/1/2002 here in Sweden, and all systems with 3kg or more of R22 had to be converted or destructed 'til 1/1/2015

i got into the trade a little over 2 years ago and the resi company I started with (commercial now) was charging 285 a pound when I started and 380 when I left for r22. stuff is getting out of hand

could that company replace that monster with two smaller units? Better efficiency and easier to get in there?

Should have tightened the packing nut tightening the cap is only delaying the inevitable The next guy behind you is not going to have your logic when he comes for another service call

I like the Tesos cause they’re smaller. Generally most companies don’t provide anything other than a recovery machine, a torch and a vacuum pump.

Looks like a 1960s installation. 50+ years old. Will the modern systems last that long?

We don’t mark it up a lot. Last I heard was probably between $115 & $125 a pound. I could be off that it was last year’s pricing if not a year and a half ago.

I’ve never had any luck with the sealants. I’ve tried 4 different ones over the years and they all have failed. I haven’t tried that one though.
