My grandfather own a 4door impala back in the 70s and he used it as Bandung-Jakarta Taxi or we called it "mobil travel" and there's many muscle car community amongst the taxi driver. In the 90s most travel agent upgraded their fleet with better cars and many taxi drivers started to scrap their old muscle car and sold it on "gerung-gerung" auto event or auction. the gerung2 auto event ended in the late 2000s where muscle cars (us/australian) are already a collector item. Now you only see muscle cars as rich people collector item but not back then where the middle class or taxi driver used it as daily and taxi car. Here where i live many expats drove a LHD cabriolet 60s Impala as their daily and rare jdm cars (THEY'RE very cheap) due to less importation restrictions (FTZ)

3:49 Believe it or not J99XAR Drift Circuit used to be a part of real street circuit. It's called Lippo Village International Formula Circuit. It was built in late 2000s to host A1GP (remember those?). Unfortunately the track failed it's certification (or depends on who you ask, there are some theories) and they never held race beside one off Indonesian touring car championship. Most of the track has been redeveloped but part of the drift circuit, especially the chicane in the island is an actual part of the circuit. Another leftover of the circuit is paddock area that you can see after you exit the highway that is now used for local university. 17:03 This is actually Toyota Corolla AE101 Super Touring car built by TRD Technocraft. This car was former works Toyota Team Indonesia (TTI) cars to compete at Southeast Asia Touring Car Championship back in the 90s. TTI itself imported two cars and Engine+ car is the only complete and running car in Indonesia at the moment. If I'm not mistaken, TRD only made 4 of these in total. It was raced in Indonesia up to early 2010s and this car actually have a lap time at Sentul faster than early gen Huracan Super Trofeo. Supposedly because it has a suspension that is tuned specifically for Sentul circuit (especially since the car rarely raced abroad so they can just stick with one setup). Luckas is an incredible guy, always humble and kind. What makes him and his shop different is that he didn't just built cars, but he also created parts in house with huge standard that is rarely seen in Indonesia.

Thank you for exposing our automotive culture to the world. The reason why we can't import used car is, because people will import used cars from Singapore (due to their regulation as well) and it kinda kills the local automotive industry. But one interesting thing that differentiates us from Malaysia and Singapore, budget car enthusiast uses German cars such as the E36, W202, E39 or E46 due to the large engine displacement. With local assembled Japanese cars, you would only get the low/economy engine option, and you'll need to import engines.. Which end up you spending way more than playing with Mercs and BMWs. So yes, you'll see rich enthusiasts driving a S14 Silvia or 240SX, while you'll see budget drivers driving E46 325i.😅

I'm also a mechanical engineer, and I have a passion for cars, but that inner fear of failure and judgement from others keeps me from taking that leap of faith. Even I ask myself, why would I leave my comfy salary job with benefits, to go work on cars that probably won't pay as much and might not have all the benefits that I currently have? Maybe one day, but I have to think about my family and make sure I can provide a good life for them today and secure a good future for my daughter.

This level of car culture is indeed not accessible for most of us (Indonesians). The barrier to entry from the financial side is very high. It's more into the high level lifestyle, rather than a common one. Also the motoring culture here is different, most of us tend to travel with a lot of family members in a single car, which leads car makers to produce and inject reasonably priced MPVs and vans to the local market. However, social media platforms help us to know car cultures from many countries in the world, which keep our dream alive, of one day having one of these cars in our garage and take care of it. Thanks Larry and Hagerty for coming!

Wow! Good video! I used to drag raced my 4 barrel Toyota Kijang in Menteng, Jakarta on Saturday night back in early 90's. All I remember my country Indonesia had the highest car tax in the world at that time. Only rich peeps who worked in the government offices, foreign companies or entrepreneurs could afford to own nice cars . When I moved to US in 2000 I felt so lucky to be able to own several nice cars and rent quite new cars cheaply although I worked as a regular employee in a small company. Now I'm in JPN for more than 11 years and I find most people prefer tiny cars aka kei cars because of the narrow roads and expensive gas price. Most big engine used cars in JPN are cheaper compare to small ones because of zeikin / yearly tax and shaken / bi-yearly inspection. Once again, like you mentioned everything about cars in my country Indonesia is waaaay moaaar expensive than other countries

If you ask me? I like the SEA car culture WAY better than the USA scene. For the normal guy or rare girl that wants to take part? ITS an amazing experience. The best way I can put it? Its all about the cars. But it's the people there that make it great. What is not said openly? Is the freedom you have there. Along with just how open people are. I know it sounds weird. But if you get a Chance? Take a cheap flight out. Bring your Gear with you or buy it there. And soak up the culture. Then take time to enjoy the beaches. The great food. And the atmosphere.

You can get brand new Porsche 911 in the US for about $200k-$300k, for the same car in Indonesia that would rise to the price of a 918 Spyder or even more. Civic Type R in here are also sold at twice the price of that in the US (setting aside the dealership markup cases there).

I've learned lots of knowledges of how to built proper cars few years ago from both Victor & Luckas....I had 2 datsuns for track back in the days, and one of them was the 510 that had the 6-points seamless rollcage installed under the OEM car ceiling unremoved crafted by XS (most people said that it's the only race car with the ceiling fabric installed above the rollcage here in Indonesia)....And the 510 was the only retro race car using the original NA Nissan L16 engine with no stroke-up that could beat 4ag's & still road-legal ;)
