Indigenous Identity | Full Episode | SBS Insight

The 2021 Census shows more Australians than ever are identifying as First Nations. This week on Insight, in a special NITV-Insight co-production, we ask why are more people identifying, are they all embraced by the community and what’s at stake for Closing the Gap and voting on a Voice?
Insight airs Tuesdays at 8:30pm on SBS: www.sbs.com.au/...

Insight, hosted by Kumi Taguchi, is Australia's leading forum for powerful first-person stories offering a unique perspective on the way we live.
Insight first went to air in 1995 and has since been a mainstay of SBS current affairs programming. The team doesn't shy away from taboo topics: from polygamy, to brain implants, to the secrets revealed on the deathbed.

I would never think of asking a virtual stranger their ethnicity. And if, for some reason, the person tells me, okay, that’s fine, that’s interesting. I’d tell mine, half Irish, a quarter Polish, a quarter Russian/Ukrainian (Soviet) How do I “identify?” Just as I said! All three cultures are important to me. If I have pick one? I really can’t. I’d rather identify by religious background. All of my family is Catholic of some sort, both Eastern and Latin rites.

I was born in Ireland and my parents and Grandparents but my great-grandfather is from Wiradjuri Aboriginal Community and Great Great-grandfathers Mother was Miriwoong Community so I always look to Aboriginal Historical and Community Services for Aboriginal Australian people and also as a Multi-Linguistic Enthusiast I always spend some time with writing some personal diary entries in Aboriginal Languages from what I can write from what I've read and learn although I may never get to go to Australia because of Monetary issues and also Disability Health issues I always think of myself as Miriwoong background and will continue to write in part in Miriwoong and continue to learn more Miriwoong as the Language is very endangered and is becoming close to extinction I hope to help keep the language alive in my own personal life diary entries so the language will stay alive in the future for longer and hopefully will become more increasingly noticed again in the future yet again
