The back story on Sophia is that she had a stroke and as a result she has no filter, if she thinks it she says it.

Thanks for the reminder of how amazing the character of Sophia was on this show. Such a great cast and overall scream of a show!

I loved watching this show with my family when I was a child. All the old ladies loved Golden Girls because the characters would say out loud everything my family was too polite to say. My great aunts and grandmother would act like they were scandalized, especially by Sophia. My mother and her friends loved the ladies because that was true to who they thought their own mothers and aunts really were.

That was truly a great show. Try watching episodes of Night Court, News Radio, Third Rock From the Sun, The Odd Couple, All in The Family, The Jeffersons and Seinfeld.

The actress playing Blanche was the Reverend Mother in “Nunsense”. It’s a musical comedy about a group of nuns doing a fundraiser. It’s here on YT and it’s very funny.

Actually, yes the character Sophia was the oldest, but as for the four actors, Betty White ( Rose ) was the oldest Jan. 17, 1922 - Dec. 31, 2021, second oldest was Bea Arthur ( Dorothy ) May 13, 1922 - Apr. 25, 2009, Estelle Getty ( Sophia ), was third oldest ( miracles of Hollywood makeup, and hair ) July 25, 1923 - July 22, 2008, and Rue McClanahan ( Blanche ) was the youngest Feb. 21, 1934 - June 3, 2010.
