This was definitely my favorite Indiana Jones movie so far!! I absolutely LOVED the action, story, acting, all of it! I especially liked the father/son relationship and also that this movie had a more complex female character. This movie was a 10/10 for me, and I hope you like my reaction to it! Yes, the whip scene explains Indy's (Ford's) scar. From Harrison Ford's interview on Inside the Actors Studio: "Some one's done the math, and Sean Connery would have had to become your father at thirteen years old." "Well, you know Sean..."

22:00 It's called a zeppelin. Basically, it's a balloon with a cabin under it. It's basically balloons with cabins under them - they are filled with a light gas like helium (it used to be hydrogen until the Hindenburg disaster) that makes them lighter than the surrounding air, allowing them to float. Additional air tanks on board allow the buoyancy to be controlled. Zeppelins are commonly confused with blimps - the key difference is that zeppelins have an internal skeleton to maintain their shape, while blimps use air pressure alone to do that.

The intro is just brilliant, we get the backstory for Indy's fear of snakes, the whip, his scar (that's actually Harrison Ford's real scar) and the hat, and they also show his love for ancient artifacts and his strong sense that they belong in a museum for all to see, instead of being locked up in some rich guy's house. :) And the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is simply movie magic.

I agree with you, that opening gives so much. From the whip scar to his fear of snakes, along with his strong belief that historical artefacts belong in museums, it's all there! My favourite one is that it explains the hat. Indy's hat as always been an anachronism. The hat's brim is too large for what would have been in style during the 1930's. It makes much more sense that it comes from the 1910's.

No.1 film of 1989, Oscar winner for Sound Editing and for the planned original trilogy, it was a great ending. Ford & Connery, although they were playing Sr. and Jr., they were actually 12 years apart in age. Seeing this at age 9 was an amazing experience. It had everything you could ever want in a summer blockbuster. Bringing back characters we love, astounding storytelling, grand locations, great action sequences and of course, scored by the great John Williams. I loved it for being more than just an epic adventure story. The core story of father & son rebuilding their relationship, restoring one's faith in all that's good and hopeful despite the odds and working together for a greater cause. The opening scene with Young Indy, he was played by the late River Phoenix. It did inspired a tv series, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles", 2 seasons (28 episodes/4 TV movies) which is on Disney plus.

22:00 "How does that thing even work? I've never seen one of them, definitely never been inside one of them." Zeppelins were all the rage in the 1920s and 1930s. It's like being on a luxury cruise ship, but in the air. Zeppelins are dirigibles, not blimps. The difference is that blimps are just a bag of gas like a balloon but dirigibles have a metal skeleton inside which allows them to be massively larger. Germany used zeppelins (dirigibles) more than any other country. The famous Hindenburg tragedy was the death knell for this kind of travel. The fact that airplanes are much, much faster and people are in a hurry drove dirigibles into extinction. There are some modern companies working on modern versions. Very much worth googling.

This one is my favorite as well, just edging out the first one. There's so much good character work in this one, and the addition of Connery's Henry Jones Sr. is epic. Tonally it returns to form after the unnecessarily dark second outing, and actually gives main story vibes, where the second movie felt more like a side quest: hey, you ended up in this village, and they need help, click on the quest-giver for more info. Having the main female character be competent (okay, yeah, a bit evil, but competent) was a nice change of pace over the second. And the ick factor in this one (rats) didn't feel like it was added in solely for ick factor, unlike the bugs and the dinner scene in ToD. Having Marcus and Sallah along for the ride was lots of fun too. One other nice thing that came from this movie... the pinball machine that was released to go with it is one of the best I've ever played. So, there's a scene in the next one that a lot of people complain about. I won't go into details, but it's considered highly unrealistic because there's no way he should survive it. But I always wonder, what leftover effects does drinking from the Holy Grail provide? Could it make the body more resilient, so that it can endure what others would not? Something to think about if/when you watch the next two. :)

If you like John Rhys-Davies {Gimli}, you might like another movie/show he did called "Shogun (1980)", FX made a new series for 2024, and it also looks epic. John says he got the part in Indiana Jones, because they saw him in Shogun, and they wanted him to be that type character again. Load and forceful but also friendly and likable.

Just watched the Temple of Doom reaction, and I also prefer this one, but not because of how characters are portrayed, just think the humor is a bit over the top slapstick in part 2. One thing I'd offer to think about, is that in terms of physical competency, Marcus Brody is just as inept as Willie was, he can barely even stay on a horse, but oddly no one is ever offended. We are taught a lot of strange things today that in a few decades will be looked back on just as silly as things we think are silly about 30 years ago.

Important to note: Indy and his dad aren’t immortal now. The immortality effects of the grail stop when you pass the seal in the temple. “That is the boundary and the price of immortality.” Maybe continued drinking is required. It’s not entirely clear. In the novelization the knight explains he aged a year for every day he didn’t drink, so that’s why he’s older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he stopped being immortal when not drinking, he just lost youth

great reaction. I agree, this is my favorite. The difference for me is it isn't even close between them. But it goes 3, 1, 2. If I only had 100% to give, it would be 50% 3, 35% 1, 15% 2. I didn't hate 2 by any means, but 1 cuz it was first and so new and awesome. I was around 10 years oldl when it came out. 2 was too screechy - short round and the girl (i don't even remember yappin and screaming too much it was just grating. Still I liked it but not like 1 and 3. And finally #3 well, it had Sean Connery. The back story setup was great. the relationship between father and son was real. that was how I perceived the relationship with my dad. But we never did get the mutual respect in the end, he passed and I still feel like I was failure to him, I loved him and I know he loved me, but I never, ever got that proud look except when I came home on leave during my Navy years. The last 2 I won't insult the first 3 by putting it in the same list. Actually, I haven't seen the last one so I can't really judge it yet. I enjoy your enthusiasm. You are obviously very intelligent and quick witted. Thanks for sharing this with us.

@@Starsaber222 Yeah, I guess if you just automatically go there then there's not much you can do. Here's the downside: your experience won't be as the filmmakers intended, especially if come across plot points that you predicted an hour before, and two, if you're a youtube reaction channel, it robs the audience from seeing your fresh experience to what takes place, and instead we get a "told you so" that isn't as fun to watch

Astounding you didn't' know about zeppelins. or even have seen Sean Connery as 007! But yes, this is a great place to stop. No need to watch 4 and certainly don't watch 5!!

I have not, and don't plan to watch the fifth one, but the next one is no were as good as the orignal three. to me indie should not be an old man. there are only the original three in my eye

31:06 "Riding off into the sunset? That's the way to end a movie." It's also a good way to end a trilogy. It's also a great way to end a franchise. They should have stopped there. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the worst of the 4 movies. By far. Then Dial of Destiny said "Hold my beer" and sank to even lower lows. Seriously, you could just stop now. Or watch them to see for yourself.
