The incident of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) is one of the most tragic and heartbreaking events in Islamic history. It occurred in the year 680 AD (61 AH) in the city of Karbala, which is now in modern-day Iraq. The story of Imam Hussain's martyrdom has been passed down through generations and is considered a defining moment in the history of Islam. Imam Hussain (AS) was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the son of Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) and Lady Fatima (AS), the daughter of the Prophet. After the death of the second caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab, Imam Hussain's father, Ali, became the caliph of the Muslim Ummah. However, Ali's rule was challenged by Muawiyah, the governor of Syria, who had a personal grudge against Ali. After Ali's assassination, his son Hasan became the caliph for a short period, but he was forced to relinquish his power to Muawiyah in exchange for peace. After Muawiyah's death, his son Yazid became the caliph of the Muslim Ummah. However, Yazid was known for his immoral and oppressive behavior, and his appointment as the caliph was not accepted by many Muslims, including Imam Hussain. Imam Hussain refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid and instead chose to stand up against him and his corrupt regime. He traveled from Medina to Mecca with his family and a group of supporters, where he received a letter from the people of Kufa, inviting him to come to their city and lead a revolt against Yazid's government. Imam Hussain decided to accept the invitation and set out for Kufa with his family and followers. However, Yazid's army intercepted them in the desert near the city of Karbala. Imam Hussain and his companions were outnumbered and outmatched, but they refused to back down and stood their ground After Imam Hussain (AS) and his family and followers arrived in Karbala, they were surrounded by Yazid's army, which outnumbered them by thousands. Imam Hussain knew that he and his companions were vastly outnumbered, but he refused to back down from his principles and beliefs. On the 7th of Muharram, Yazid's army cut off the water supply to Imam Hussain's camp, which included women and children. Imam Hussain and his followers suffered from thirst and hunger for three days, but they refused to surrender or back down. On the 10th of Muharram, the battle began. Imam Hussain led his small group of companions into battle against Yazid's army, which consisted of over 30,000 soldiers. The battle was fierce and intense, and Imam Hussain and his companions fought with great courage and determination. Imam Hussain's half-brother, Abbas, led a charge to try and retrieve water for the thirsty children, but he was surrounded and killed by Yazid's army. One by one, Imam Hussain's companions fell in battle, including his own son, Ali Akbar. Imam Hussain continued to fight bravely, but eventually, he was struck by multiple arrows and fell to the ground. Yazid's army then trampled his body with horses and beheaded him. The surviving members of Imam Hussain's family were taken captive and treated with great cruelty by Yazid's army. The women and children were forced to march through the desert without any protection or care. The tragedy of Karbala is a symbol of the struggle between good and evil, and Imam Hussain's sacrifice is considered a heroic act of standing up against oppression and tyranny. The story of Karbala has been passed down through generations, and it continues to inspire Muslims around the world to stand up against injustice and oppression.
