In China it doesn't matter if you are local or foreigner you pay their same price for everything you buy. In India as I have experienced before. Foreigner can be asked to pay as high as double or 3 times the price of what locals are paying.

China is like most countries. With urbanization and a declining birthrate, the average number of children per family is 1.2, which means that many rural residents are left with elderly people, and their children go to the city to study or work. They grow some vegetables and fruits on their own land and sell them in the nearby city market to supplement their family income. The government does not tax farmers, so the prices are much cheaper than in supermarkets. These people are simple and honest, and will not charge high prices to tourists or foreigners.

Actually Chinese people especially the old generation can't stop working. Their kids will be sending money home but they can't stop working. China was poor & people dont have enough food to eat but in the past 30 years they work so hard now look where china is. Also they don't want the new generation to forget the hardship their parents & grandparents did to shape china today.

In my city, Hangzhou, u may find thousands of olders who sell the farm products beside the streets. However, many of them r far more rich than most of us. They may own 4-10 houses in this city, and each of them worth 200-600 k US dollars. They can live decent lives only wiht the rents from extra houses. However,they just choose to do some work and they r proud of contributing to the society. It is their faith to be a useful person for the society.

We Chinese want to be productive instead of just idle doing nothing. Beside we believe in carry on working to keep us healthy and our mind alert. Also they can socialize with others at the market place everyday. Many don't really need the money for what they are selling. It is just extra money for them. They are actually very happy coming here to socialize.
