Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park, CA / A Campground & Park Fav!

Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park & Campground is a park and campground favorite! It is located in the Western Sierra Foothills about 12 miles East of Jackson. It is known for over 1100 Indian grinding holes, a museum, a recreated Indian village, hiking trails and a fantastic campground. We enjoyed two nights here in December of 2019, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and had the campground to ourselves! Join us as we share what this beautiful campground and California State Park has to offer. If you like history, a visit here is worth the drive!

Nice campground! My wife and I learned that turning an acorn into something that you can actually eat is a bit of a process. Much respect to our native people who made this a staple part of their diet.

tglass0000 it really was a nice campground - really enjoyed our time here. Yes - you can’t just pick up an acorn and eat it - definitely work involved! And respect for living the way they did.

If you get near this area, it is definitely worth going to! They did a really nice job on the museum. Also, the Native Americans have ceremonies at this park, which would be interesting to see. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment!

Wow, truly a perfect camping experience! Neat stuff to look at, and absolute privacy. Lucky! Very interesting about all those mortar holes. Interesting preserved or reconstructed roundhouse. I've usually only seen dilapidated ruins in the ground....

We thought so too! The huts and roundhouse were reconstructed, but they still do ceremonies there. I believe the campground is closed when they have a big ceremony scheduled, but you can go and watch. We have seen grinding holes elsewhere, but never this many! It was impressive. And yes, really great in the campground being the only ones!
