Indian Gray Wolf | Blackbuck National Park, Velavadar | December 2023

Ойын-сауық

The Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) is a subspecies of gray wolf found across the plains of the Indian subcontinent. It is one of the two subspecies of wolves found in India, with the other being the larger Himalayan Wolf. The Indian Gray Wolf is one of the two (sub)species of wolf found in India.
However, both species are currently being proposed as separate species from the gray wolf. The "Indian plains wolf" is genetically basal to all other extant Canis lupus apart from the older-lineage Himalayan wolf,
Currently, the Indian Plain Wolf is heavily threatened by habitat loss which is causing conflict with humans. Additionally, interactions with free-ranging dogs are catalyzing the transmission of diseases and significantly depleting natural prey abundance.
