From what I understood of this movie this 2 were already in a form of relationship and would go on the train together until one of them the office suit guy had to give in to society pressure and got married- we see his ring. At first the movie shows them as strangers but then we see they know each other but since one of them is married their relationship can no longer be maintained so they remain distant in the train- taking separate paths although its shown that even then they are still in love with each other. Hope I helped
