India's Fight Against China is a Nightmare

India and China have clashed in deadly brawls on their disputed border multiple times recently. An estimated 60,000 Chinese soldiers are positioned on India’s border, with main battle tanks, fighter jets and artillery facing off against 200,000 Indian forces on the other side. This is the border between the world’s two most populous nations both armed with plenty of nuclear weapons, so the consequences of this conflict extend far beyond Southeast Asia. It might as well be happening on the border with my neighbor Carl. editor note show population numbers over map animation. But what exactly are these two giants fighting over in this inhospitable 4,000 meter high altitude freezing region that is so strategically important?
Written by: Chris Cappy & Brian Sproule
Edited by: Michael Michaelides
Why are they fighting with sticks and stones when they have perfectly good rifles right next to them? and how can we hope to avoid all-out conflict between India and China? Hit the like button and let's get started. (Jayadeva Ranade) A former Indian National Security Advisory, believes he knows the truth about why China has recently become more aggressive in the region. It’s because Xi Jingping needs to protect his new China Pakistan economic corridor. This is Xi Jinping's most expensive belt and road project over the past decade at $65 billion dollars. When you hear about “belt and road” all the other projects are a total sideshow compared to this. Because the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. CPEC will add a new 10,000 km shorter route for oil transport from the middle east to enter western China.
This will eliminate China’s single greatest strategic vulnerability to the US navy blockading and cutting off their energy supply. There’s only one problem: it's located just a few kilometers from India’s disputed border with Pakistan. And to make matters worse, it’s located inside Pakistan Occupied Kashmir so the roads and railways pass directly through territory that has been claimed by India as their own. It would be like if my neighbor Carl started expanding his driveway into the weird place between our yards where we’re not sure who owns it but we agreed neither of us would start construction there. Cut that out Carl. According to India this project is being built in illegally occupied territory. So India has tens of thousands of soldiers located a few kilometers away from this strategically important trade route for China.
In September 2020, India’s Chief of Defence Staff (General Bipin Rawat) acknowledged this very problem stating “Chinese economic cooperation with Pakistan, in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, along with continued military, economic and diplomatic support mandate high levels of preparation by us.” One of my favorite proverbs from India is “where the needle goes the thread follows” I think CPEC has accelerated tensions on the border. Because in response to Chinese build up in 2021 India shifted 50,000 additional troops to their border with China to reinforce the region. They did this by taking 20,000 troops and 6 army divisions off their western border with rival Pakistan to prioritize defense against China instead. This represents a 40% increase in force strength from 2020.

I got caught in the middle of the Indian/Pakistan conflict in Kashmir back in 99 as a photojournalist covering the war in Kargil. You just can't imagine how insane the territory is; cliff-face warfare, Billy goats w/guns I kid you not. This was when they were pointing nukes at each other, although they still are, but this was bad. I've covered a few conflicts & none of them were as implausible as that war. They'd be firing at each other from mountaintop to mountaintop & entire mountainsides would be blown out from beneath them. It was horrific as all war is, but fighting in territory like that is unlike anything I've ever witnessed or even seen portrayed on film tbh.

Because Pakistan wanted to control that territory and cutoff rest of the india from Kashmir, so they send their soldiers to capture that heights which were always abandoned due to extreme winters. So all this happened Pakistan started war but US like always supported military dictators in Pakistan, denied india any help so war get prolonged and messy

In truth, water is far more valuable than gold, silver, or billions of dollars. If you were in a desert dying of thirst, you would do anything for water. Water is the live blood of all economics. Look at Chinas crops right now in 2023. They are going to have a 90% reduction in crop yields because of no water, then flooding then the equipment being held up at checkpoints with big fines. At this rate China will have to import food or face a mass starvation of 600 million people.

Indians in the comments downplaying the fact that India is water stressed are most likely far right trolls who never like hearing facts that might show India at a disadvantage. We are extremely water stressed, even after 7 decades of independence there are small towns and villages where people have to walk for miles to draw water and even in cities marginalized people living in ghettos and slums have to line up in front of a water tanker everyday to fight over water, this has been the norm for decades now and most privileged Indians commenting on youtube would not like to be reminded of that. We have miles to go in regards to water security and equitable access to clean water for all especially the poor.

Or his calling the YantZEE River as the YangTang! That may be an approach that could be a semi clever tactic to make sure nice folks like the KGB/FSB .... or the gentle & tolerant "correct leadership" of China & its underlings ... don't take him too seriously, when he criticizes/analyzes them, their actions, weapons, or military tactics.... Pop culture INFLUENCES people, leaders, and events more than scholars want to admit. That, BTW, is why dictatorial regimes and autocrats want to control pop culture in their societies so fervently.... so that if you are living in China, North Korea, Russia, Iran, Laos, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, etc. and you called the rulers and ruling elites names, you could EASILY suffer special Socrates and Sima Qian treatments, from them, pronto, even in the year of the Lord Jesus 2023 or the year of the Lord Buddha 2566! The small facetiousness aside, I enjoy his take on weapons systems more than any thing, as someone who has zero first hand knowledge of any thing beyond a kitchen knife. Being that he's a US veteran ---- I have a nephew who's just returned from Japan, having just completed his US Marines tour... and a niece still serving as a Navy officer down by San Diego/Coronado, where she grew up, while her own father was in the Navy... so I have had some second hand discussions with them on guns and weapons... but, again, having no first hand knowledge of such things --- I enjoy listening to his videos on weapons, not as a personal fetish that American Second Amendment Skolers and George Washington Militiamen take them to be..... but as tools for large and small organized military activities.

When discussing casualties at the border, it is crucial to recognize a significant distinction. India consistently upholds a commendable level of transparency and honesty in providing information to its people. Conversely, the PLA does not share the same obligation and often manipulates casualty figures. Another notable aspect to emphasize is the disparity in preparedness between the two nations. India's long-standing engagement in low-intensity counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations along its borders has resulted in a highly trained and battle-hardened military. In contrast, the PLA relies primarily on numerical superiority and has demonstrated weaknesses in mountainous terrains.

Chris: A very informative video. In 17 minutes I understood the India-China border much better. I did not know about that 1914 Summit Meeting or the role that Tibet played and plays today. However, you say: "... in response to Chinese build up in 2021 India shifted 50,000 additional troops to their border with China to reinforce the region. They did this by taking 20,000 troops and 6 army divisions off their western border with rival Pakistan to prioritize defense against China instead." I am not a Military Expert, but I would think that India, with its 1.4 + Billion people, would have enough troops to cover BOTH its borders with Pakistan and China.

valid point, but it is easier to send re-enforcement from closer areas, especially since the enemy on that side of the border is failing on it it's own, their government or the lack of it (since the past two years now ) is weakened, they have other bigger problems to solve than border disputes.. also here are some points if you want to know more : 1) that the Chinese army is conscripts, most of whom did not want to join the army, especially not for a "far off" and "cold and brutal" territory, the economic gains of which are for the CCP leadership.. where as in India it is a volunteer army, the soldiers and officers are real soldiers who are not only battle hardened but also very passionate and patriotic about what they are doing. 2) The US intel to India is a little difficult to buy since historically the USA has supplied info, weapons and airplanes to India's enemy state - Pakistan. and also tried it's best to make sure India does not develop nuclear weapons. several reports suggested that the CIA was involved in the deaths of quite a few Indian scientists. 3) always remember, anywhere in the world especially in Asia and Africa, if you see trouble at the border between two countries you can safely assume the British have a hand in it, and if it is inside the country it is safe to assume the Americans have a part to play. This applies to Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Taiwan, China, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, the two Koreas, Afghanistan and most of the disputes in the middle east and Africa. If the Wall Street and the London Stock Exchange disappeared somehow I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these conflicts died out within a few decades of that event too...

For most of history, India and China did not share a border. There were "buffer" states between them, especially Tibet. And parts of Tibet were ruled or controlled by Indian empires for centuries, especially the western parts. Indians freely traveled to near the headwaters of Indus and Brahmaputra, at Mount Kailash and Mansarovar because they are holy to Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Buddhists call it Mount Meru. Lots of cultural ties. But these were with Tibetans, not so much the Han Chinese. All this changed only after the Communist China attacked and conquered Tibet. India had police forces helping Tibetan government but Nehru backed down like a lap dog and stayed silent while Mao gobbled up Tibet, hoping it would end there. Of course it did not end there, for Mao soon took over Aksai Chin, the far eastern plateau portion of Ladakh region of Kashmir. And it still controls it, and has been salami-slicing further west into Indian Ladakh at every opportunity. The clashes happened there 3 years ago because India under Modi finally built a motorable road all the way to the northern sector for its military forces; this road run parallel to the LAC and passes barely a couple of miles from it...The Chinese thought they could simply salami-slice right through it, but were confronted and rejected. And so now the tense situation holds. China would love to take more territory and push India east of the Shyok and Nubra rivers, and threaten India's hold over the Siachin glacier, a sore thumb for China's friend Pakistan.

It's more complicated than that. There never was a truly unified Tibet after the 800s, and if there was a Tibetan nation, it consisted mainly of a loose confederation of fortified monasteries in the Himalayas. Yes, some Tibetans chose to form a unified nation of their own under the Dalai Lama in the 20th century, but there were also others who instead sided with KMT China (and much later, CCP) who did not recognise nor entertain the idea of the Dalai Lama as their leader. The parallels between Tibet and, say Ukraine in the 1600s, Germany in the 1700s and Checnya and the Caucasus in the 1800s and 1900s cannot be ignored.

Lol, yes it was peaceful throughout centuries of the "India Empire." It seems you only blame the British for all your problems but never for territory taken from others under their rule.

@@ChandranPrema123 Did they stop teaching you world history in India? Mongolia was part of Qing China and was created as a buffer state between communist China and Soviet Union after WWII by agreement. That's why Taiwan, or Republic of China still claims it as its own territory. But the PRC doesn't claim it. CCP map includes parts of Japan and Russia because those were territories taken by them before or during WWII by invasion. Given India didn't exist as a country before 1947, it doesn't have these "historical problem." Think of it as Kashmir x10.

Nope, no war between India and China ever.. nobody will be as stupid as that ... India just fuels the conflict for local political reasons, but they will never let it escalate. The border will be settled along LAC in the next couple of decades.
