NASA's Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 for a genuine scientific study of the Sun. It's the only object to have actually touched the Sun's outer layer. SOHO, a joint project between the ESA and NASA, is at the L1 point since 1995 and still transmitting scientific data. So, who's copying who in this regard? We're no longer in the space race. Legitimate scientific space missions started long ago, which is why we've reached every planet of the solar system, and even gone beyond. Meanwhile, some are still celebrating a scientific achievement with nationalistic pride.

I hope people are aware that it’s not even going any closer to the sun as many are expecting. The purpose is to cover 1% of the total distance between Earth and the Sun, specifically, to the Lagrange point 1, that’s a halo orbit around the sun.
