India 2015: Bandhavgarh National Park (Part 1)

A six hour drive from Panna brought us to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. Noted for its tiger sightings we hoped that, at last we might actually glimpse a tiger (or two). First morning there we were in luck! Joining the ‘Bandhavgarh Raceway’ we were left incredulous by how, with the enormous lengths to which bureaucracy is taken in Indian Game Reserves, how shambolic and often dangerous, the actual game drives proved to be!

Bheem is much bigger and heavier than Matkasur. That said, the coldest stare we got was from T-124 or Riddhi in Ranthambore.

Chris Drage - Appreciate your efforts at making and publishing the video. You could have avoided some unnecessary comments. though. 1. "...we have to show our passports to enter....". With a little curiosity from your side, you would have understood that ALL people entering the Tiger Reserve are required to show their photo ID. Your comment seems to covertly suggest that you were singled out for some act of prejudice. The safaris have to be booked online (often many weeks in advance) and names of tourists along with their photo ID numbers have to be submitted during online booking. The need for such a system hardly needs any explanation. 2. "After a 40 min wait, we are allowed in...." Once again you seem to cleverly suggest that everyone else was allowed inside while your were made to wait, without saying it in so many words. The entry and exit timings are known to guides and drivers, and in my experience, these are followed without even a minute's leeway. Why most drivers tend to go and queue up early (40 minutes in your case) is because they want to be the 1st to enter the gate to (i) get a chance to see a tiger sitting on the road and (ii) be the first to check for signs (like pugmarks) before they get obliterated by other vehicles. I know that everything in the Indian Wildlife Reserves is not perfect. But they certainly deserve a better description than statements like "bureaucracy taken to enormous lengths, shambolic and dangerous drives" etc. What is not good has to be stated, no doubt. I myself don't like tourists who consider their trip a failure if they don't see tiger(s). Or the despicable practice of jeeps clamouring for space and crowding around the tiger.

Do you really want me to go into more detail about some of the truly terrible treatment we received as Eco-tourists during this brief visit to India? How apart from myself everyone ended up with food poisoning? About being toppled off an elephant in a remote part of Bandhavgarh - an activity we didn't want to do anyway but were virtually 'made to' because it was 'scheduled'. I won't continue as some of the memories of this trip are still too painful. Suffice to say when the UK travel company who organised this trip heard about our experiences they refunded us half the cost!

Chris Drage Sorry to hear what happened in your journey but I would like to make few points i.e. food poisoning can happen anywhere anytime. It's just that we are more accustomed to it and our stomachs are much stronger than yours. So you can't blame us for the food poisoning and for the elephant ride, you could have just said NO to the concerned people.

I am afraid we have been spoilt by wonderful wildlife encounters in Southern Africa where everything is so well organised. When it came to te Indian game reserves I guess we expected them to something on a par. The numbers of people visiting means a huge number of vehicles to accommodate them so one tip get in early...you'll have to be at the gate half and hour or so before it opens. Similarly, the tiger population changes when we were there Zone 3's senior male tiger had just died leaving the females with cubs all hiding and not coming out lest another male encounters them. In this case the male would kill all the cubs. Its best to read reports online from tourists who have visited recently in order to see what the tiger dynamics are. Hope this helps.

The last we heard was that the Indian Gov was planning to stop the Maruti Jeep rides and have open buses instead doing the parks. Seeing a big tiger, as with any wildlife experience, is simply a matter of luck.

+BALENDU SONI Because we were so unhappy with Panna our tour company in India let us leave a day early and were able to get us a place in ZONE 3 at Bandhavgarh. Sadly, we were never allowed to go to Zone 3 again but had to put up with the tourist rat-race in Zone 2 and later Zone 1. No tigers in Zone 1 we were told as the resident male had died and all the females were keeping their cubs holed up and well out of sight!
