Up to 400 people perished in a brutal massacre at Suai. The yard where 1800 independence supporters cheered and yelled for independence is now a wasteland.

“There’s blood everywhere, there’s blood on the walls, there’s blood on the scaffolding…” The towering half-built cathedral became the militia’s biggest weapon. “Bullets weren’t used to shoot people because they were probably expensive. So they’ve just literally herded these people up three flights of stairs and thrown them off.”
Still at the place where he fell are what appear to be the Suai priest’s glasses. There was no doubt that the militias viewed the defiantly pro-independence Suai a legitimate target. And here, as in the rest of Timor, it’s the Indonesian military that are labelled the real villains. “First when they burned the houses they were burnt by the militias, but the Indonesian military was standing behind them.”

I was an Australian Peacekeeper based in Suai in 2004. I have been all around Cova Lima area. It was very sad to see the suffering the Timorese people had been through. The church in Suai was very sad because I found bullet holes in the walls. I know the church as been finished and is a beautiful building even though it has a tragic past.

The only true ally at that time for Indonesia is USA, that's why they didn't get too involved..
we had been together with Indonesian Government for 24 year but our soul never with them, even though many of us were killed by them but, we never gave up, never lose our hope in independence dreams. And today, we are standing on our own land, our own nation and our own home; The Republic Democratic of East Timor.
