Indefinite article in English - "a" and "an"
In this English lesson, you will learn how to use the indefinite article (a, an)
Dans ce cours, vous allez apprendre l'article indéfini en anglais.
“a”, “an” and “the” are articles. They are types of determiners and they modify nouns.
“a” and “an” are indefinite articles. This means "not specific" so they refer to non-specific instances of a noun.
The most common use is when it is the first time we refer to an instance of a noun.
In this video lesson, I explain the grammar rules and all of the other situations of when to use indefinite articles.
There are some grammar exercises at the end of the lesson.

Hello I have a question. I saw that we can use a/an instead of 'one'. I mean, when I say 'I want a computer.' Does that mean 'I want just one computer but two, three or four computer etc. Or like you wrote any computer is fine; it doesn't have to be a particular one. You'd be really helping me out.
Best video so far I can find

+I Gamer gamer Hello and thanks for the comment and question. Let me give you an example: Imagine that you want to buy a car. You visit a garage which is selling 10 cars. Your favourite car is car number 7. Car number 7 is a *specific* car. It is a particular car. You do not want to buy any car. There is a *specific* car that you want to buy. "specific" is the opposite of general. Best wishes, Andrew

+Crown Academy of English I understand your explain. But I have one question. Why does not use article in forth sentence? You said 'car number 7' is a specific car, therefore we can say, your favourite car is "the" car number 7... isn't it?
@CrownAcademyEnglish
8 жыл бұрын
jyt80 My answer here was to define the word "specific" - Unfortunately your question is complicating that explanation but let me try to explain: Remember that we use the indefinite article to refer to a member of a larger group. (I explain that in this video. Watch it again. The example in the video was "Mark is *a* student at Cambridge University.") "Number 7 is *a* specific car." is another example of that. - Each car is a specific car isn't it?! Number 8 is specific, number 3 is specific. There are several specific cars and number 7 is one of those specific cars. That is why "Number 7 is *a* specific car." is correct in this context. Andrew

+jyt80 To add to my reply: Of course, the conversation with the salesman would use both "a" and "the": Customer: I am interested in buying *a* car. Salesman: Which car do you like? Customer: I like number 7. Salesman: Car number 7? Well *the* car is 5 years old......" Customer: "How old is *the* car?" etc.... Andrew

+Crown Academy of English Oh! Thank you very much! But you don't understand my question. This is completely my fault. My question is why there is no the article in thins sentence: "your favourite car is __ car number 7". Anyway, I understand at all. Thanks again!
Thank u very much...u r the best
Thanks a lot of
So the article 'a' in your examples that you mentioned doesn't refer to the adjective nice,? A nice car?
A most beautiful explanation, thank you
