    I worked at a bowling center for four years, and I can tell you why that happened. Whoever oiled the lanes didn't spray on an even coat of deck spray. See, the pins have a nylon ring around the base of them, and if you don't use deck spray or you don't apply an even coat, they start sliding. Kegel has their own spray, but it's not as good as the old Tide and water mixture.

    Dude, what's it like to work a bowling alley? I found a job working maintainence at a golf course; something I'd never thought of as a job, and loved it. I know a bowling alley is a little different, but I'm fascinated by the inner-workings of jobs like ours.

    @@jakabokbotch99 It was pretty cool. I didn't care for the huge amounts of people I had to deal with when I worked nights, but my day shifts as a mechanic there were pretty laid back. I learned how to fix the machines and fit and drill balls. Plus, I got free games, so I went from a 130 average to 200 in a year.

    If I ever roll eleven strikes in a row, I think I'll just walk away. Lots of people score perfect games, but I'll probably be the only person ever to quit at 290.

    When I first joined a league as a kid of about 10 in the early 70s, I coveted the milestone patches you'd sew onto your league shirt when you bowled your first 700 series, 800 etc, and most of all the 300 perfect game patch. What I could not believe is that they made a 299 AND a 298. Heartbreak literally on your sleeve if you wanted.

I don’t know what it is but for some reason the pins like to slide all over the place. I once actually witnessed the six pin turn into the seven pin! The head pin came off the right sideboard hit the six and the six slid standing up without wobbling over to the seven pin knocked the seven out and stood in its place. Had a decent shot going into the final game, 10th frame... Struck on ball one... Second ball? Caught a slick spot on the approach in the slide, momentary balance loss and I hurried the swing to get rid of the ball. Saved myself a fall and managed somehow, NOT to foul... (I don't know HOW!) The ball pancaked. Weird pin action, and I left the weirdest leave of my life... the 5-7-10... I needed two to tie, so I ditched my Hurricane and grabbed my plastic and launched a straight ball to try to clip the 5 into 7... It was a good fling at it... and I managed to knock the 5 into the side board... it MISSED the 7... caromed back across the lane toward the 10, and managed to miss the 10 entirely. Our team (my rescue company), was bowling against the engine company out of our station... the informal bet we had going, was that the losing team would pay the winning team's share of the food costs, on our next shift at the firehouse together, and the losing team would also be responsible for cooking the meal and cleaning up after. You just KNOW I got razzed for a while after that. LOL

    My brother is a high-quality veteran amateur bowler, and he's seen this happen... Not necessarily in this exact situation, but a pin sliding straight sideways and not falling. This is NOT supposed to be possible on well-maintained lanes. Oil is not supposed to make it all the way down to under the pins like that, and an oily condition is the only way a pin could slide like that

  • @OskuPalermaa300

    @OskuPalermaa300

    Exactly. Oily pindecks do it. And similar things happen pretty often. But the timing to have it happen on last shot of 300 and move that much is painful to see. Same for example stone 8’s, they happen and sting, but have it happen when needing one strike for a major (Randy Pedersen, Chris Barnes semi of Us Open)

    Less normal event to happen yeah. What makes this shot so unlucky, like Randy’s, is the timing of it. Clearly both things happen from time to time. Bad break. I still consider the solid 8 for righties, solid 9 for lefties as the only true tap. These balls nowadays have such sharp back-end reactions, that solid 9s for righties are common for an off shot. This one wasn't quite there, since it caught a piece of the 9, but more or less was that type of hit. Almost can be a call shot half way down.

    I agree. 9 pin only rarely is a tap. 8 pin is, though actually also is left due to too much angle through the pins, but obviously we wouldn’t change anything after that.

    I saw a professional bowler go all the way to the last roll of the 10th. He left the 5 pin standing. It was like the final pin was giving him the middle finger.

    It hit high. Pressure made him short on the follow through which kept him inside his mark leading to hitting ever so slightly high on the head pin. That's sometimes forgiven with a random bounce of a pin but unfortunately it just didn't happen. Great game either way, I know it's hugely disappointing but it's obvious he'll get back there again.

    You are absolutely correct. You can tell it was high by the way the left clothesline fell. Head pin went back (=high hit), 2-pin went to the left off the front of the 4-pin, 4-pin missed the 7-pin but some other pin took it out. I will say it wasn’t a bad shot but it certainly wasn’t a perfect pocket hit. They should teach bowlers the difference between the accuracy line ( the 1-2-4-7 pins) and the carry line ( the 1-3-6-10 pins). I’m amazed at how many bowlers, even pros, don’t know about this. Sure, the guy got a bad break, but his ball was high and rolled over the 8-pin spot. It never touched the 9-pin, so he had to have some other pin take it out, and unfortunately that didn’t happen.
