My first flight ever was in an Alaska MD-80, sitting up towards the front. Lovely experience. A few years later I found myself in the back row of an American MD-80 - so far back that there was no window because the engine pylon was connected next to my ear. The noise was completely outrageous and that entire area of the plane was buzzing in double vision. It was a horrific experience. I've always been a huge fan of jets, but this wasn't even jet noise. You can hear it in this video - just the most relentless powerful 2,000dB buzz of death. Today I really regret that my last time ever flying on the "mad dog" was so unpleasant and that I was so eager to get out of the damned thing and onto the 757 connection. I do love me a good 757, but I've got a definite soft spot for the good old MD-80. I miss it and I miss McDonnell Douglas.

My late Uncle Norman (who was an engineer at Boeing) confessed that he loved to fly in the MD-80 (over all of the Boeing airplanes) due to the fact that it took off at such a fast and steep angle!

if these aircraft are retired it will be very sad. best engine sound of any aircraft today. other airplane engines are too quiet and don't provide that sound thrill of the md 88 engines.
