Incredible Fishing Continues!! | Insula Lake Part 4

#bwca #fishing #smallmouthbass
The incredible fishing continues on Insula Lake! We spend our last two days in the BWCA crushing walleye, pike and GIGANTIC smallmouth bass. Even though we ran out of live bait days ago, we continue to crush the fish with soft plastics and trolling baits.
Our jigging strategy changes slightly with soft plastics and heavy 3/8oz jigs. Our jigging cadence has to increase with soft plastics, as the fish will not be quite as willing to bite. The larger profile of the 3/8oz jig and 5" zman shads soft plastic seem to be attracting the larger smallmouth.
On day five we find a sunken island while trolling. The island tops out at 16' and is surrounded by 30' of water on all sides. It is clear that the larger fish are holding to this structure. The Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike seem to be cruising the top of the hump and the Walleye are in the deeper water off to the sides. We spend the day drift-jigging over the structure and getting into a lot more fish.
Day 6 brings some nasty weather to start the day but more incredible fishing. This is the day we have to head out of the wilderness, but we still get a couple of good hours fishing in before we have to make the 15 mile trek back to Lake One to end our trip.
We end up catching roughly 140 fish, likely 100 of them being walleye, at least 30 bass and the rest Northern Pike. The quality AND quantity of the fish we found on Insula this trip is truly remarkable - I can't wait to get back and spend more time chasing fish on Insula Lake in the future.

Agreed! Always good walleye fishing when there's limited sunlight. A little bit of wind and rain and it can be dynamite

Ever use those marker bouys? Come on a good spot toss it out and and you can drift over the spot many times and always know where it it. Theybare small and don't take up much pack room

I used to use them before I upgraded to a sonar with gps and now I can just mark and map those spots and it works pretty well.

The fish finder has really help me find more fish AND stay on them for longer. Walleye especially really like to school up, which makes them tough to find, but when you do you can get into a whole lot of them all at once. I do like the taste of Pike, probably almost as much as walleye, but I don't enjoy handling or cleaning them as much as the other species, so I really only keep them in the winter. Smoked over an open fire sounds amazing! Do you have a secret brine recipe you're willing to share? Or is is just a simple saltwater solution?

@@therealfarwater brine. for an average 5pound pike, i use 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup sugar or maple sugar, mix, keep in a ziplock, put the flesh for about one night, rince, dry, smoke. On the grill over the coal without flame i put some gren branche to prevent the fish from sticking, loosely cover with aluminium foil and close the sides of the grill to the ground. I bring about a handfull of chop hardwood like maple that i rinse and put in a steel can like tuna can that i have burn before. It take about 20min, and somme days after the fish stay very good, after all it is an old way of preservation.

Just stumbled across the channel! Awesome vids! Got a question, I want to take my dad up there from Sept 30th to October 7th, from my assumption this should be a great time of year just just about everything from smallmouth, to walleye, to pike. I have never been though, alot of input from others tell me it's a perfect time, what are your thoughts?

I think it’s a great time for fishing! The park is very quiet after late Sept, so it’s my favorite time to go. If we have a cold snap or two, lake trout should be pushing up shallow (
