Kano’s mom is extremely manipulative. As a company president should be. Mahiru wanted honest feedback. She wants to prove herself outside her safe zone. Although she did commit to working with the team so she is letting multiple people down.

Kano said that nasty thing because she was scared that Mahiru would leave her behind. Maybe in the moment Mahiru thought she was genuine, because it was said without any hesitation, sometimes you think someone means what they say in the heat of the moment, but then you think about it later, and you realize that they didn't mean it, that it was said out of fear, of culpability, of frustation or any other emotion.

the gaslighting mother is crazy 💀, i definitely think she's all business and the words she said is just so Mahiru is more willing to accept the proposal. She sees mahiru's art as beautiful yes, but more towards a stepping stone for the mother's business. I think this is the case cause we also saw that the mother said the same-ish things to Kano when she was still part of the group, but immediately dropped Kano off when Kano made that mistake.

If Kano told everyone that Mero was the one who exposed the Rainbow Girls' center, then Mero would be cancelled online within minutes of hearing what she said, & there's no guarantee that Kano would be saved by exposing that either. It would effectively destroy the Sunflower Dolls, & her mother's dream would be in shambles. It's a completely damning secret that would destroy everything if exposed. That's why she's kept it to herself.

Wow. I had definitely not thought about it, but Kano's vivid appreciation for Yoru's art likely directly stems from Yukine's influences. Kano grew up striving to impress her mom, so her standards and preferences are probably cloned from her mom. Not a big shocking revelation, but still, it tingled my brain for a minute.

If you have to defeat your rival with dirty, underhanded means that it doesn't make you better, you're still lacking ability. The only one you need to better than is yourself. Professionally speaking, for something so important, you don't hire a beginner with just talent. You hire someone who has already proven themselves. I honestly believe Yukina offered the job to Mahiru was to stand in Kano's way the way she feels Kano did to her.

  • @WinterGirlRules

Yes. Kano has been in love with Yoru for most of the series, & has shown it in various ways, but she hasn't actually said it. She's said some things to suggest it, & has almost said it, & then walked it back, but she's never actually said the words. Even after kissing Yoru, when asked about it, she said she did it on a whim. She says "I wanted to get my license to take you places, etc.", but hasn't SAID, "I love you." Yoru, on the other hand, has not only been in love with Kano this whole time, but she's been much more open about it. Saying "I fell for someone," & playing the housewife when Kiui & Kim brought Kano home, & saying "I love your singing, & I love you", when they were lying in the snow. She has been saying it in multiple ways & she has been waiting for Kano to say it back all this time. Yoru thinks she's about to say it, & then she walks it back, & she teases her for it, all the while patiently waiting for her to say it for real, & instead of getting "I love you", she gets that comment. It implies that this whole time Kano saw her as someone who couldn't do anything on her own. Kano obviously realizes she shouldn't have said immediately after the words have left her mouth, but it throws their whole relationship into a different light, & Yoru questions whether or not she'll ever hear Kano say "I love you", & worries that Kano's love for her may not be what she thinks it is. That's why I don't find it cliche for her to say "That's what you think of me?" because she has been waiting for her to be honest & stop pretending her kisses, & everything she has said is what she actually means, but she got that instead. Also, I don't expect Yoru to talk to any of the other members of JELEE at the beginning of the next episode, or while she's working on Kano's mother's middle finger to her daughter project in the early stages, but I do think Yoru will realize what a piece of shit Kano's mother is before too long, & Kano will be able to say & show her true love & that she thinks the world of Yoru, & Yoru will choose JELEE in the end. Though, there will probably still be more to it than that.

2:31 It is true that Kano has been very very positive to Mahiru, but that is not the issue here, in my opinion. After many years of receiving negative feedback, Mahiru learned to hate herself and her art. Then Kano entered her life and kind of changed that, but not really. The fundamental problem is not whether Kano thinks that Mahiru's art is good, but whether others will see that as well and acknowledge it. For Mahiru, getting acknowledgement from a producer carries a different weight, just as me being acknowledged by my thesis advisor for my professional work is different from being acknowledged by my mother or my partner for the same thing. It is precisely the personal connection between Kano and Mahiru that makes it difficult for Mahiru to accept Kano's praise as an objective evaluation of her skills. There is also the issue that fans of JELEE kind of saw Mahiru's art as holding back the group, which an emotional obstacle that Mahiru had to overcome to decide to fully dedicate to improve her art (go to school and train on the basics). 8:27 I would think that Yukine (Kano's mother) actually said that Kano is just another person trying to get in her way. It has been a while since the incident with Kano and Mero happened, but it does not seem like Yukine has done a lot to reconcile with Kano, which makes me think that Yukine's efforts to recruit Mahiru is not at all a ploy to try to reconcile with her daughter. It is strictly business to her. 11:51 Mero may be involved, but it can't be just her. How would Mero get the information on other idol groups to post on this account? By herself, I think it would be very difficult. The assumption would be that Yukine was behind all this, hence the meat of the problem between Kano and Yukine. Kano saw Yukine as this genius producer that managed to spot talent and turn everything into gold. Much to her disappointment, Yukine presumably was moving her idol group up in fame by bringing other idol groups down, which was the opposite of what Kano saw in her Yukine. Kano's disappointment is understandable. JELEE is a way for Kano to achieve the ideal that she saw in her mother when growing up. Ironically, the account that posted other idol groups scandals is called "Look at reality, idiot." The name of the account is not a coincidence. 14:57 It was interesting how cold Yukine was when Kano mentions her trying to impress her father. I am curious about what the story with the father is. Yukine was just as cold when Mahiru mentioned Kano during the interview. I wonder if Yukine saw Kano's father as a hindrance to her professional goals. The few shots of him in this episode suggest he wasn't taking much care of his appearance. 23:52 When Mahiru told Kano that she wanted to try making art for the Sunflower Dolls, Kano wasn't upset just because she thought that Mahiru was leaving her, in my opinion. I think that part of Kano's reaction was that Kano felt betrayed that Mahiru wanted to work for "her" as in Yukine, the person who betrayed Kano's expectation and seemingly throwed Kano away. Finally, Kano probably thought that the same thing that happened to her would happen to Mahiru if Mahiru worked for Yukine, that is, that Yukine would not hesitate to throw Mahiru away if she saw Mahiru as a hindrance in the future.

From calling her Yoru as the artist of the Jellyfish art that gave Kano inspiration, to the love to Mahiru per se. Kano has become the jellyfish as she more and more relying on Mahiru. Mahiru essentially became her emotional support as Kano has no goal, she just follows what Mahiru says. When Mahiru said Kano could sing for her, it was not helpful for Kano which only made Kano even more relying on Mahiru. So naturally when Mahiru wants to work with Yukine which Kano hates and cancelled all previous plans. Kano would naturally think of it as a betrayal, and Mahiru would drop her, setting her into once again all alone. But Kano is the type of person who does the talk after action, so she says all the things over the top of her head. When Kano realized she said the wrong thing she immediately shut but it was too late. But I believe Mahiru would later on understand she was talking not on rational thinking and it's not to be mean to her. As for Mahiru, I believe she didn't quite understand just how much emotional weight she's carrying nor what the full back story of Kano is. If Mahiru fully knows how the past of Kano is, no doubt she would reject such a proposal. But she didn't, so she prioritized her improvement of drawing in the first place. When Kano said to draw for her, how later turned out was that Kano believed Mahiru needed to draw for her no matter what quality it was. But Mahiru wanted to improve her skill as she was becoming more confident about her art, she wanted her illustration can be well enough for the team, and she wanted somebody can point out what could be improved, to be regarded as an artist, instead of Kano's "As long as is Mahiru drew it I'll take it" mindset. But Mahiru certainly didn't grasp just how "good" her skill really was, this project Yukine proposed was too enormous for her, but in her own mind, she would most certainly want to finish it alone, not to mention the artist in those previous episodes who made Mahiru lost her confidence. At the time she has Kano, but what about this time? Mahiru is heading towards the deep water zone, yet she's unaware. Both Kano and Mahiru are the type of feeling insecure, Kano despite looking like a positive figure, but deep inside her heart it's full of darkness due to how she's being raised, and Mahiru it's lacking confidence in her art, feeling that she is just an ordinary. After Episode 5, we can see that Mahiru would only feel safe when drawing, but Kano can only feel safe when she's with Mahiru. At this point no one knows what Yukine is really up to, but it's certain that she is a nasty selfish woman, in her mind there's no difference between ends and means. She lacks love for her child, only uses Kano as a tool for her fame, as suggested she would not call her real name Kano. Yukine plays well in manipulating people's minds (in fact both Yukine and Kano, but Kano has the motive of true love to Mahiru), she did that on Kano and Mahiru, Mahiru as a high school girl would certainly be buzzed by this tempting invitation and she speaks what Mahiru want, the true recognition of her art. But for now, she likely wants to break the bond between Mahiru and Kano, to annihilate the threat Kano caused to her. Sometimes later she may do the same to Mahiru as to Kano.

When Mahiru was talking to Kano’s mom, to then hear Kano’s mother refuse to refer to Kano by name…. That broke my heart. It is easy to see that the mother is manipulative, and Kano is probably reeling over the fact that Mahiru is now wanting to work with her. While what Kano said to Mahiru was really mean, Kano obviously doesn’t know how to act level headed when it comes to her mother. That is really sad. I am interested to see what Mahiru and Kano’s next conversation will be like (curious if Kano will go into more detail about her broken relationship with her mother). However, now I see that, with Kano and Yukine being so damn alike, having the words that Kano supported Yoru' mental state and emotion health with statt coming from Yukine, of course Yoru is gonna be positively triggered into feeling inspired. Yoru needed those words along the way, so why would those words influence her now. These videos can be so elucidating.

Yukine is a way for Mahiru to improve. Also, Mahiru is used to people saying she is talented and getting close, only to make fun of her. So I disagree with your take on Mahiru not seeing the obvious. Anxiety and imposter syndrome suck like that. I also don't think Yukine is actively antagonistic. I think her recognizing Mahiru having talent serves to show that Kano takes after her mother for identifying talent. I think the issue is Kano is jealous that neither of her parents acknowledge her, but her mother is noticing her friend more than her. Finally, the biggest obstacle is Kano not talking about her history. She was given a good chance to convince Mahiru not to go, but kept quiet.

I totally despise the mother, she is speaking as a con artist all the time, she has their daughters living separated for a reason. Now, she is scouting the ilustrator of theiir daughter's group, I know that they are going to redeem her, but I don't think that the mother is redeemable. I don't think that Mahiru doing illustration for 2 musical amateur video is a professional enough illustrator for the assignment anyway. They are going to pass all of it as a misunderstanding, and I don't like it, I don't think that you can justify their attitude with a teenager. She doesn't know either about how they got the gigs, she knows nothing and she is a powerful producer, and we have to believe that :S . Mahiru is really self-centered in this episode, you accept the job of their mother, then you say to her when you are with all the group, then when she had an foreseeable outburst of rage, she clings to her words maximizing her guilt. I don't believe that she could expect a much different reaction of Kano in this situation.

However, JELEE may not be the thing, or the only thing, that feeds Yoru in the future. Taking commissions as an artist is the way that life works. My ex is a graphic designer, and she had to take many jobs to get were she is at as an Editor-In-Charge. My sister is a graphic designer turned teacher, because art may not be all you do. Yoru has a massive opportunity, one that will enhance her skills and financial capabilities for JELEE! This arc is just having to lean on Kano's emotional issues with her relatively shitty mom, which is fascinating for me. I'll root for Kano every time, even if Yukine ends up just being a legitimate businesswoman who accepted her daughter choosing to not be an idol like she wanted.
