I went to the track today with a friend and his adult grandson; it was the first time the grandson had watched Indycar. He was so impressed that after Rinus Veekay crashed his car, his team was able to rebuild it and he qualified in the top twelve; he said “That guy is now my favorite driver.” He wants to come to the race and he was calling all his friends telling how cool that was. Definitely made a new Indycar fan today.

Indy really is special. I watch all kinds of motorsport and there is no feeling from any race like Indy. Le Mans is just as great to me but Indy has its own kind of magic. This is my favorite time of year
A rookie, a trailblazer, an Indy 500 champ, and a guy who got bumped last year fighting it out for the last row. Stacked! I love Indy 500 qualifying. Say no to locked in spots!!!

If we ain't having engine failures, we ain't tryin'.
Nascar fan here. I started watching today to see where Kyle Larson was. I finished watching today completely forgetting about Kyle, and focused on the fast 12 and the back of the field, and all the various drama. This was just a good/fun show.
This was one of the best Day one qualifications in recent memory So much to talk about Excited to see how tomorrow shakes out
I want an official to answer why Christian Rasmussen had his late run waved off and they proceeded to say he wouldn't improve at all. But he was improving after the plenum event on lap 2. But then they let Graham Rahal I think it was have 4 way slower laps but was not waved off? The officials were very inconsistent Saturday.
kyle is a fricking legend

David, I said it before, I'll say it again. Robin would be proud of you . Keep up the excellent work 👏 👍
Shoutout to Peacock for some great coverage, and for a brief time I was listening on SiriusXM instead and that coverage was excellent too. Of course, I still spent all day looking forward to this video :D also holy crap Veekay!
Today felt like a game 6 that sends the series to a game seven tomorrow. Oh wait tomorrow isn’t even the race 🤩
The work of the Ed Carpenter Racing team cannot be understated. Fixed up that car and fixed it up to be fast too!
This is why I love indycar!!!!
How about Sato going into the Fast 12 with that piece of junk RLL wagon?! Sato and Daly have always been my two favorites, so I look for Sato to stay at the front and Conor to work his way up quickly next Sunday.
The good news for Ericsson, Rahal and Legge is that it doesn’t seem Nolan Siegel can turn a lap over 229, let alone 230, so they should all be in the field without much drama tomorrow. Siegel is in a road corse car and there is just not much they can do overnight to find 2mph average. I was blown away how the track action never stopped all day. What was the longest period without action other than the VK crash cleanup? 10 minutes? It was incredible how teams ran over and over again all day. Yes, incredible results by RHR and DRR!! Top 12 -wow!! And VK and ECR are stone cold racers! It’s going to take some miracles for anyone to beat Team Penske - when it matters they’re going to have the capability to find 1 or 2 mph over the field if they don’t completely blow their race setups. It’s going to be very difficult to pass all 3 of them next Sunday. Ganassi is in trouble and there is just no top speed there. Dixie has to be so frustrated. 😣
Really would love to see Rinus win this thing... If not him then Larsen.
I've been watching and listening to qualifying for nearly 50 years and this was one of the most entertaining qualifying days I can ever remember. Great job David on your reports and a shout out to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network for stellar coverage all day long. Bravo.

This whole week has been classic Indy. The unpredictability has made this year’s event must-see television
I like the new and improved racecar graphics. It's cool to see the production value on the channel continue to progress.
So glad i went back to indiana for this, has to be the most exciting Saturday I've seen
NOW THIS IS MAY. REGARDLESS OF ONLY 34 cars….I’ve had a Indy Qualifying Orgasam today and for Sunday. LETS GOOOOO
"Plenum fire"/"plenum event" were definitely the words of the day today. This was a fantastic qualifying day. I really enjoyed watching the whole thing, especially when the scramble started with about an hour and a half to go. Looking forward to bump day and the fast 12 shootout tomorrow.
I think we should call Saturday "Fate Day" to determine what your gonna be doing on Sunday, whether it be chilling bc you Qualified, or going all out to find that 115% to get pole or to stay in the race
"Plenum Event" That was a normal thing at the end of season Marlboro 500.
The engine issues was extremely annoying
I'm happy to be here enjoying the coverage. Reminds me of the old Indy Live Daily reports on ESPN, back in the day.
There is something magic about that piece of property at 16th and Georgetown. How else can you explain the things that have been happening there for the last 100 plus years? Veekay laying it all out. Hunter Ray finding extra out of nowhere. Big names struggling to make the show. Only at Indy.
Sato is a God, not the God, but a God.

We went to the track today and we had a great time. We were in the stands just before turn one. The speed these cars carry into the corners is amazing! I'm looking forward to going back next year. I highly recommend Qualifying Day. It's not very crowded compared to race day.

I was impressed with the drama qualifying weekend could bring with even 1 car to bump. Being able to bump more would be better but bumping none would be a tragedy.

Great report! Gracias David, saludos from SCL
I was at the track seeing qualifying for the first time and been to 3 races soon to be 4 and man what an experience tons of drama and action all day and Veekay was clutch that last run man what a rally
When you think about it. Indy is really Ed Carpenter Racing’s focus and best chance all year. No surprise they dropped their time and sent Veekay out again. Ganassi should have did the same with Palou in hindsight. I’m sure he could have got it in the top 12. Trust your driver.
Great job, David. You’re the second coming of Robin Miller
David, thanks so much for your comprehensive coverage of this week's prerace action.
Hate to say it but Nolan doesn’t trust the car and is driving scared at this point. I know it’s too late to put in a Jack Harvey or Charlie Kimball but unless one of the others crashes bump day has already been decided

I really think the backup car is not good either. Not a speedway prepped car. Low budget teams unfortunately do not have a prepped back up. You wreck it and your suffering. Just look at Ericsson and they have way more resources than Coyne.
Nolan siegel is going home if he cant keep his foot down. Plus it being a road course car. Id be shocked if it isnt him.
They explained the Lane 1 rule on NBC. You submit to have your time withdrawn to be allowed to enter the lane. BUT, your time isn’t actually withdrawn until you pull out of the lane and begin your run. That way, if something happens on track - another car qualifying ahead of you crashes and time runs out - and you don’t actually get to make a qualifying run, then you retain your original time.

Thank you for the perpetual outstanding Commentary!!!! Priceless!!!! Thank You!!!!
Loving the history segments! If you have the resources, you should do something similar regularly
It'll be interesting to see how Larson's day goes tomorrow. Will he make it in time to the All-Star Race? Hopefully if he has a chance to run for pole they'll make it top priority. Great run for a 1st timer.
If they hold their spots Penske will become the second team owner to hold the pole positions for both Daytona and Indy in the same year. The first was Highland Indiana’s Ray Nichels, whose cars did it in 1957.
I wish they would go back to 4 sessions: 11 set, 11 set, 11 set, bump the slowest (everybody behind the Bumped move up one and Bumper slots into 33). I hate that you can be the fastest at the first session and all it does is tell you, "Well, at least your 12th."

Trust me, I don't want a Penske front row! That is the last thing I want, but I can't change my opinion just because of this. If they earned it already, they should have it. 🏎🏎🏎
Awesome video David. Unlike 1994 Graham Rahal won’t dump the Honda though. Believe a plenum problem failed Mario his final 500 in 1994
Good stuff thanks fellas
Having Chevrolet and Honda as engine suppliers is much appreciated. But, you talked about IMS's history as a test track and proving ground. After more than a decade of this One-Design (Dallara) Formula, hasn't the spec chassis been proven enough? IMS still has some special qualities related to its history and traditions for sure. It's just too bad they don't race more than one kind of race car anymore. If the safety of today's cars could be incorporated, I'd rather watch any cars from before the Tony George era than what we have now. Heck, I'd settle for some good ol' Watson-Offys, Kuzma's, Novi's, etc. And, bring back the Turbine cars, Diesels, Four-Wheel Drive, V-8's, Straight Sixes and Stock Blocks!
As a european it was the first time I could watch the whole day of qualifying thanks to indycarlive and a VPN and man how cool that was. Indeed it would make 0 sense to put locked in spot
The history less is a GREAT idea. Well done!
hey david, can you ask Marcus Ericsson if his misses Chip Ganassi Racing!
Honda will get the best fuel mileage …and it will matter
Two manufactures is not enough to make it interesting anymore. Cannot understand why we can’t get more manufacturers involved.

How about we call the first day Field Day and the second day Bump Day or Pole Day if we ever end up in a year without bumping although I seriously hope that doesn’t happen
1.5 barometric pressure ? Turbo relative
I haven’t seen the results yet….the tension!
Didn't get to watch it live but followed updates on social media. Unbelievable drama with engine issues, veekay and rahal. Can only hope the race is as good

@DugTheDog; I've been waiting for the opportunity to say this; I have to wonder if Marcus Ericsson is regretting his move from Chip Ganassi Racing to Andretti Global?!? it just does NOT make sense to me that he would do such a thing. Unless...Andretti signed him for a S-Pot of $$money!
Well first off. I couldn't been more happier for Rinus 2: Bummer for Ganassi since none of their cars weren't able to make it to the F12. Especially Dixon and Palou since Palou suppostly had a Power unit Issue Also i really want to see Graham make it in after Last season's Heartbreak. At the same time. That's gonna be a bummer for marcus if he dosent make it into the show.. from almost winning B2B Indy500s to Potentially not make it in
I'm pretty sure this was the first time in years I couldn't watch it because it was on Peacock and some IRL channel. Complete bullshit. At least the 12 will be on NBC tomorrow. And as a huge NASCAR fan, those idiots are going to have 5 races on Amazon Prime next year...like they haven't lost enough fans in the past 10+ years.
Today is one of the busiest days in sports PGA championship Qualifying for Indy Pacers Knicks game 7 at MSG Nuggets Timberwolves Take your pick
Once again major problems ! No major channel covering the qualifications! ??
I didn’t understand the inconsistent decisions by race control of throwing the yellow flag on some slow attempts to make the field while allowing full four lap runs by other drivers also obviously too slow to make the field. I liked the aggressive move early on to waive off an attempt & set a precedent, but then they became very inconsistent in the last hour. Frustrating for many.
I really hope this was the nail in the coffin to keep bump day I can only imagine social media today was very good with all the chaos

My man is out here sunburnt all week, he can get a couple more thumbs up hahah.
I partially agree on the reliability. Some unreliability is ok and there hasnt been enough in recent years. This month for honda has been really bad tbough. Starting at the gp theyve been replacing brand new engines a lot. That while looking to lack the top end power chevy has. You cant be both slow and unreliable. Tough look imo.

Today was CRAZY as I was thinking and talking to someone and saying there is NO WAY that Veekay will get back to be in the Top 30 but to be in the FAST 12! Ed Carpenter needs to buy Veekay's team Steak Dinners for the rest of their lives!

Larson won't be running by halfway
I love graham rahal I have for years but I’m honestly tired of the excuses. Two years in a row facing bump day. And then he says he can’t do anything more and the team worked hard. Yes they did but look at veekay. Crashed the car and six hours later got in top 12. Lesser funded cars ran well even after crashes. Rahal needs to figure it out and I hate to say that but damn dude
INCRDIBLE DRMA!
So if rahal had a teammate get in the fast 12 I think graham just needs to be put in that car and if he struggles to get that car in the top 30 then what are we even doing here something isn’t adding up I’m shocked he’s in this position again and I really fear he’s gonna be the one on the outside looking in again tomorrow and boy will that be sad and embarrassing as well
The Honda teams can't be happy right now, Chevy is dominating the top of the fast 12 and Honda is at the back of the grid. RLL would be in even worse shape of they did not have Sato this year hugging the outside wall for four laps
Talk to Mario about blowing engines.
I would like to know why you can pull out of your draw spot with no ramifications. Like "I have a problem bla blah blah (track temp or some other excuse). Then get back in line, when the track is better, then go qualify and possibly get into the top 12. Why is that??? And may the cheaters have engine issues.

All the qualification rules have totally changed since the pre-Tony G. IRL take over. But, the old 3 opportunities for one car, two weekends of qualifying and Pole Day being ONLY the first Saturday.
