Incredible Abundance in a Small Garden | Self-sufficiency on a Small Scale Homestead

Incredible Abundance in a Small Garden | Self-sufficiency on a small scale homestead. In just two years, Saronne and Bob now grow around 80% of their food in a small homestead. They use permaculture practices to make the most of their garden and land.

About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

What a heartwarming video. I bought 14 acres of grassland in Nth Cumbria in 2003, and dumped my job. It's been an arduous journey to single-handedly change it into woodland and a small veg garden with polytunnel over the years (planning authories, locals et al). I've finally got permission to build a few strawbale & cob guest dens too. Now I'm self sufficient in woodfuel and charcoal, and bottle/dry most of my food (I'm off grid and can't freeze) and wouldn't ever go back to my old life. If you're really going to do this with plenty of years to enjoy it, take that leap of faith and burn some bridges....don't leave it until you retire or you may never get there.

I am 66 years old, I have 13 beds, and quite fruits trees. I canning everything is posible, I made the tomato sauce for a whole year, I only have 0.2 acres. I manage two crops every year! When I hear 👂 you talking remind myself so much. We bought the house in 2018 buy very little from the store. Love to see your animals! My concentration it was in microbiology too. LOL 😂!

I’m in the middle of a life crisis….physically and emotionally. Our granddaughter died last year and because of inactivity and a knee injury I can no longer garden as I did. I want to garden again which I didn’t for the last year and now my physical issues seem insurmountable. I’m desperate to break out of this corner I’m boxed into and garden again. Right now I have to have a chair and cane. My dream is to find my way back…..🥺🥺🥺

Hello Liz I can't tell you how timely this video is for me. I too am not young (66 and beginning to feel it!) and have never had a garden as such although I've always dreamed. I'm now buying a plot of land (only little, 1000m²) with 2 tiny derelict houses and hope to move in May next year. I live in NW Turkey and am on my own now but thankfully have some good friends who will help me when needed. There are moments when I think 'oh my word whatever have I done?' but this video along with yours and Huw's have really given me the encouragement to believe I can do it! Sorry for the long missive. All the best Davut (Dave)

Ohmy....dreaming of my own small holding now even more, with lots of space for tomatoes. Although I must say, this year we've made some kind of "bus stop cubicle" on the allotment with pipes and transparant plastic (no greenhouse allowed, since it is on private grounds) and it really did well. Had to ripen a lot of fruit on the window sill, but with a total of about 10kg, very pleased how that turned out. Till next time Liz! Gr. from the Netherlands, Debbie

Very relatable for me as a mid-60s retiree very, very excited about my garden and what it’s growing for us. Herbs and easy vegetables first, but ever expanding choices to experiment with techniques. It’s really amusing to bring in what seems like a small harvest when I’m in the garden only to realize I’ve gotten a big load and I’d better get busy with cooking, preserving, drying, and sharing. Six acres is a much larger than we have, but we still have great abundance, and I’m very grateful, indeed.

This is so inspiring. Im 68 and always wanted to live on a smallholding. But like you said, life gets in the way.

I love seeing how much Saronne and Bob have achieved in such a short time. And I love listening to her, too. Hers is one of my favorite channels to follow.

What I didn't tell you about this video, is that Saronne gave me ALL of the tomatoes that she picked while I was filming this video and they were delicious!

Such a fabulous video, thank you. When I happen to mention online, or to friends that I go to a supermarket every few months, they just don't believe me. I really don't like supermarkets at all, and your video has, in a way, stuck up for me 😊, so refreshing. I love the way your smallholding is set out. I've subscribed now. Thanks again!

What a wonderful video! I was sitting here nodding in agreement with so much of what Saronne said but the word that stuck out most was 'purposeful' - I'm going to try and remember that next time somebody asks why I don't just go to the shops!

Love that you are growing in the polytubes!!! That space could truly allow people to grow food for themselves regardless of space or climate. Thank you.

Thanks for this beautifully captured and communicated video. It was like a meditation, so relaxing, and I found myself just wanting to bite into one of those tomatoes! What a beautiful garden.
