Incredible 3 train meet East of Gallitzen tunnels 10/26/10
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This was the second video I shot on my first day visiting the Horseshoe Curve area. The first video I shot was also a triple meet, but with 2 trains and a pair of helpers. It wasn't nearly as dramatic as this. I just wish that Eastbound intermodal had shown up 10 seconds earlier.
At 10:00 in you can actually see the head end power and helpers on the coal train at the same time.
Because several people have asked in comments, this is where this video was shot from: goo.gl/maps/muXHBmoWg5p

The fully loaded coal train is beginning the downgrade through Horseshoe Curve East from Galitzen. Carefully controlled speed and dynamic braking assistance from the head end power, as well as the 'pushers' is critical to maintain control of the train through the curve. Great video! Looks like a great late Fall day.
Great video! The Horseshoe Curve area is a truly 'magical' place!
I like how the two started the loaded coal and stack train. They almost started at the same time.
Great Video! Back in the late 1970s, a friend and I camped out in the opening in the trees that was a spot that allowed the section crews to access the tracks. The opening was across from the visitor center outlook. There were four tracks then. One night while we were eating supper, there was a train on every track running eastbound and westbound. It was quite a sight!

Robert J. Karczewski in this area there where many other tracks for movements; likewise one tunnel is now closed.
Beautiful video! Thanks for sharing it. This has been a great vantage point for observing trains since Pennsy and all of its successors.
...WOW...I've been to Horseshoe Curve and Gallitzin several times...never seen them from that vantage point...thanks for posting this video...
Good job very good fantástico beautiful comgratulacion
Have been there many times as a kid with Dad and even as he passed on, brother & I grew up outside Mundy's Corner on what is now Adams Ave. Never was lucky enough to catch a 3 train meet. Great job.
I like how the trains are in view in the background at the end. Great video,.
It´s 2016 and I just had the luck to watch this video. But I can certainly say that this is part of my top 5 favorite railfan videos so far. Excellent catch!!
Thank you man. A great thrilling presentation.
this is the best video to describe the pittsburgh line, Coal, Empty coal, and intermodal! Great shot!
Great catch! I can't wait to get back to PA this year.
Fantastic video...thanks for taking me on a trip back home...this is a favorite. :)
Wow you in the right place at the right time!
Excellent Video!!!!!! This where I also had a perfect three train engine meet in 2012. The best time of year for shooting this spot. It is also an afternoon shooting location.
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting to see where some tracks have been removed. Must have been wild when all the lines were in place.
Cool meet!
beatifull shot for sure. Nice trains, nice landscape.
Great video of the 3 way meet
excellent shot, wish I was there!
Awesome
Sweet catch Aaron!!!
I would flip my lid if I had an opportunity to catch this. lol. Spectacular video!
Amazing video, a 3 train meet between freight trains on the main line is fairly unique, and I don't know any line in western Europe where you can see a 3 FREIGHT train meet, usual on 3 or 4 track lines 2 of them are reserved for passenger trains, in Europe the railways are more a general public carrier with on most lines dense passenger traffic.
We were lucky to capture one of these also, Thanks
Excellent!!!
Rarest of the Rare! All three lead locos into view to start out...no Amtrak...Empty vs loaded... only gets better. I've spent many an hour right there, and never came close. Sent you a message.
The DPUs dynamic brakes are getting a workout!
AMAZING! I love it! nice job!
Great shot!
Nice video. Didn't know it was the Horse Shoe before reading the description. I have seen many videos from this place, but not from this location - In any case: A Nice Video Cheers Adam
So Great of Logistics' initiative..
Awesome!!
oh wow thats amazing!
Awesome footage great job :-)
Very impressive and great autumn colours too I looked it up on Google earth, you can find it if you look for Gallitzin.
Awesome...like a slowmo dance.
Very good video, thanks for sharing.
This video is well done. It looks like it was shot yesterday, not 7 years ago.
Nice timing!!! :D
It's like a train set, but real life size
10* In my favs EXCELLENT CATCH AND JOB!!!!
Would have been epic if they had done some 3 way horn salute or something.
Where exactly is this spot like what is that road in the upper right through the trees?
COOL! It sure is busy. On the upper track, did it use to be double track? I know that there used to be 4 tracks in the curve, but 1 was removed, I think when Conrail came about. Why was that done?
reminds me of the snake game I used to play on early PCs and Nokia smallphones

Don't know about INCREDIBLE but it's pretty cool! Gotta get those views eh?!
super Video
Those three was going very slow a heavy load or they was just cooling it. thanks for the very good video.
Super
Awesome! Are the trains always riding that slow in the USA?
parabens exelente video all são paulo brasil.
Absolutely amazing! But, isn't it crazy that two fully loaded coal trains are operating in opposite directions? I've seen this several times in person. Kinda makes no sense.

Only the eastbound train (on the right) is loaded, the westbound is empty.
at 6:48 is the the same freight train coming back into view in the trees above?
Awesome video! What road was this filmed from?
Are you standing just above the eastern portal of the New Portage (Track 1) Tunnel in Gallitzin?

It's a great area yes. I haven't been out there in a few years. Now that I've got a new camera I want to go out there again, but this fall's trip will be to Virginia & West Virginia.
where is this its awesome
They make it hard on counting the cars, cant they just wait for their turn?
HOW LONG ARE THE THREE TRAIN
Imagine what this would have been like in the days of steam! I notice the track in the foreground was once a double. What's the little shed in the middle of the picture? That would be a nice vantage point to watch the action. I've been around Horseshoe Curve on Amtrak many times, including when the steam locomotive was still on display. I've never visited it from the outside. I must get out there some day. Thanks for posting.

I wish I could have seen it in those days. That's long before my time though. I don't know what the shed is. I need to get back out there. It's been a couple years since my last trip, been too busy with work, but I'm going again in 2015 for certain.

Thanks for the reply. Great video. Maybe I'll get there this year, too.
I looked at the map. It says "Bird Eye Road". If you follow Bird eye road, I think it takes you to Bennington or Benningtons curve. Am I correct? Been to Cresson last year for an overnight. I'm going back in the spring for a few more days. I'm new at this. Railfanning is a blast. Great video.

I'm not actually very familiar with the area myself, or at least not Benningtons curve. It's a great area and I want to get back there, especially now that I have a much better camera.
If my memory serves me, the track on the right is exiting the south tunnel .

The train on the right is exiting the Portage Tunnel. It is Eastbound only. It begins what is called"the slide" That tunnel is higher in elevation than the Gallitzen Tunnel. It is 2+% grade. Similar to the one @ Horseshoe Curve but it is down hill.
Trains are 591 (track 3), 26T (track 2), and 594 (track 1)
how did you get this hanging off a mountain Roped on So You Did not fall? ?

+Grace Nauen I linked a google maps location in the description so you can see where I was filming from. It's just a gravel turn-off with a clear view down the hillside.
This is my back yard :)
Saweet! (Aussie slang for "sweet")
It would be nice to know the location of this video. This one, as most all of them, do not state the location. tks.

Around 135 Coal Wagon and 4 Loks each Train.
Congestiòn de trenes, con los indescriptibles colores ocres del Otoño. Magnìfico video, muchas gracias.
Train numbers: 591 (empty coal) 26T (stacks) 594 (loaded coal)
Answer the Europeans questions of why so slow, its because you have a 2.5 km train going up a 3 (i think degree grade), they have trouble going much faster as far as i know
