Incomplete Characters | inFAMOUS: Second Son (Part 2)

An assortment of tropes and cliches so common and characters lacking more depth than a cardboard stencil, it feels like they might as well belong in a circus. Here's Part 2 of my Second Son opinion piece. Next time...... I'm still thinking about it.

I agree with you on Eugene. I'm a gamer too, I'm shy, introverted and a little socially awkward as well but I behave like any other person, I have a job and I interact with people. That trope annoys the hell out of me as well and if I had those powers, I would do a far better job that all 4 of them combined, when I first played the game I thought of a thousand better things to imagine to life using that power and I definitely wouldn't be inside the house all day.

How to fix Second Son: Have a cutscene saying "A conduit killed Delsin and Reggie's Parents" and "I use spray painting as an outlet" as well as "The cops always hated the akomish. That's why reggie joined." or something. Boom. Fix the game right there.

Should of also made Augustine the evil route and not have her kill delsin's brother. The evil ending sounds good until the military nukes Seattle but with Augustine offering Delsin a position as her apprentice(while allowing him the option of a power buffet) the evil ending takes on a whole new meaning when Delsin compromises his beliefs. "After all I wanted power and who has more power than the authority everyone follows." Augustine uses him as a medium to show the DUP is needed while Delsin uses his powers to cause chaos, suffering and fear. Everyone wins.

The characters' lack of depth is what bothered me the most about this game. inFamous 2 had some of the best characters in any game at the time. Hell, Nyx is arguably the best character of the second game. She's the game's "evil" influence, and yet, when push came to shove, she was more than willing to put her life on the line in order to cure the plague and stop The Beast from wiping out humanity. Character moments like that were what I was missing when I played Second Son.

It isn't a graceful switch, but it's believable based on the threat of continued survival shaking even the most stoic of people. More believable by the end of the game where Kuo laments that she fucked up and that even Nix made the right choice while she was too scared to. That made me appreciated Kuo "the ice queen" a bit more because she was still human and feared death, even in the face of what was actually right, outside of all the moments she appeared as a moral martyr. That switch provided weight to the theme of InFamous: "the good choice isn't always the easy choice"

The way Delsin develops and acts is what leads me to believe that the evil side is what was originally intended to be canon. If you try to sync up the timeline with Kessler’s where the raysphere incident did not happen it seems to sync up with when Delsin appears. I can get really specific but in short I believe that Delsin was really the beast, not John. A psycho trying to amass more power makes more sense than a villain causing destruction to save people from the fallout of an incident that never happened. The evil ending just makes way more sense to me in comparison.

I think my main gripe with the game was one of the aspects that originally caught my interest in the first place; Delsin's four unique powers. While their traversal uses were decently implemented, their combat uses were pretty much exactly the same. You have a light attack, a heavy attack, a crowd-control attack, and maybe one unique thing that the other powers don't have. Contrast to Cole (if you exclude transferring with Kuo/Nix) and Fetch, they only had one power, but they were both fleshed out so much more. Hell, Cole could use his lightning as a grappling hook to pull himself towards objects, or enemies toward him. How does that work? I don't know, but it definitely was drastically more different than his other powers. It's the classic quality > quantity case.

  • @Zivalene

Ironically, Cole has more powers than Delsin, but as you said, they are far more varied and with different approaches to strategy and situations than Delsin's.

  • @BornOnThursday

    @BornOnThursday

    6 жыл бұрын

I felt exactly the same while playing through the game twice for both good and evil playthroughs, the powers were too similar with certain qualities that made them more useful in certain situation rather than varied based on the element being used. Cole couldn't drive or get in a car because he would fry it, and he couldn't use a gun because he gun powder would explode on contact, and he couldn't swim because his electricity would discharge and he was weakened by being drained (not sure if that last one is accurate). Delson on the other hand doesn't have these weaknesses, so they become questionable while playing the game. Why doesn't Delson take one of the DUP guns, why doesn't he drive one of the vehicles to get around the city, why can't he swim? Are conduits like the devil fruit users in one piece where it's a common trait? Rhetorical. Infamous was clever about its gameplay, and why it wasn't just Grand Theft Auto with powers. We were given less access to the world because of the narrative, and it worked towards explaining the gameplay, keeping our suspension of disbelief.

I think the main downfall of Delsin's powers is how defined they are. Nevermind them being completely unrealistic and silly, they did one thing (and also copied from Cole because reasons). Meanwhile Cole had electricity. He basically had power itself as his power. That's why he had so many ways of using it and why Kesler had such a different way of using them.

Most likely the reason why Delsin''s powers are less refined has more to do with the limited development time Second Son had than the multiple powers idea. Sucker Punch got started on Second Son after FoB came out so that left them a little over 2 years to develop everything from scratch. Compare and contrast InFAMOUS 1's 4 year development cycle. It just makes the game feel more like an elaborate tech demo than a full-fledged title.

Honestly I like Reggie's viewpoint on Delsin him wanting to shield his brother from the world because of what he now is. I relate heavily because I have sister and she is my favorite person in the world even though we have are ups and downs. For instance, if conduits were real, the blast happened, Cole using the RFI happened, and now the events of Second Son were happening, and then my sister suddenly became a conduit, I would try to keep her safe, devote my life to protecting her from the authority who wants to take her away forever. Keeping her probably locked up in a place where she would be safe from them. And if she went down the path Delsin went down, to basically go disrupt D.U.P operations, I would keep a tight leash on what she does. It may seem cruel by I would care about her safety and trying to forget her powers are there then embracing it, it's a safer life for her.

The karma in Second Son didn't even make any sense and felt tacked-on compared to the other games. Evil karma with Cole always felt like it made sense because Cole had a shity life and he was societies bottom boy and even then he didn't go full-on baby killer evil from the beginning as he started out small such as scaring people and intimidating them to do what he wanted them to do. He still would have never sold Zeke or Trish out from the beginning no matter if he was evil. Delsins first Karma choice is to sell out his tribe to the d u p to protect himself. If Delsin was that evil than the whole game would have never happened as he would have never put himself in danger to save his tribe if he was willing to sell them out. Delsin never had a reason to go evil but this is an Infamous game and it needed an evil route.

And i enjoy the story like a popcorn flick. Enjoyable, but it's just that. The main characters were likeable enough for me to support and they are entertaining. So yeah, not much else. I guess what i'm trying to say is i do understand what you're pointing out regarding the game's flaws in its story but even so, i still enjoy the story for what it is. And the gameplay is awesome enough for me to like the game. But yeah infamous 1 and 2 are better overall (especially Infamous 2)

Delsin and Reggie's characters were squandered and they had so much potential to be something greater. A factor I would've loved to see is delsin and self loathing. In the beginning when he tells Reggie he's 'one of them' that could've been something great. Have us explore how delsin See's himself as a freak and as the game progresses he starts changing. If you choose good karma maybe he starts to accept who he truly is especially after seeing how his positive influence affected Fetch and Eugene ultimately changing him into a hero. Or if you choose bad karma he starts to change that self loathing into a hatred and he unleashes his rage onto the populace and DUP becoming angry, easily irritated and generally confirming the public's fear of conduits, after all "when a normal person has a bad day he punches a hole in his way...when a conduit has a bad day the body count is in the double digits" And small side note...I fucking hate how no matter what Reggie says he's proud of delsin...even if you slaughtered dozens of his fellow officers

Why did Eugene even attack Delsin when he tried to enter his literal mother's basement? I always felt like I missed a story beat, but I don't think I did. He coulda just explained to him the situation, given his powers, and off Delsin goes. As for Eugene's story resolution, in the first mission he was in, he mentions how he understands and loves Delsin's graffiti, why wasn't that ever expanded on? They could've easily had him resolve to do things his way by the end of his arc, standing up to Delsin in the process for constantly berating him, with some video graffiti of his own to signify him following in Delsin's footsteps in his own way. I think that would've been a whole lot more satisfying, and it would've rid him of having only one defining trait, that of a sweaty MMO nerd. I also think that that's what should've unlocked the stencil art minigame. Let's not have it be just Delsin tagging things up for no reason, let's have him competing with Eugene, friendly competition and all that. Ya know, have it be connected to the story. Like side content in every other Infamous game.

So I'm enjoying this look back at a game from one off my favorite series that just failed to live up to its potential, but there is something that no one ever seems to mention about this game that I hope you will, the powers. In inFAMOUS 1 & 2 Cole constantly bemoans his powers, he picked up a gun and it exploded in his face, he can never get in a car again, in inFAMOUS 2 there is a bath with a sponge and a grounding wire in it that implies that is the only way Cole can clean himself without dying. But Delsin says 'The only downside being... nope this is pretty awesome.' It's a small thing but I feel it helps explain why Cole isn't as happy about getting powers as Delsin and why Delsin doesn't seem to worry about the downside of new powers. Kuo freezes Cole's face when she first gets her powers, god knows what Burtrand and Nix did when they were starting out.

  • @Peasham

Absolutely, if Delsin had something bad happen like since he absorbs the powers of conduits why not drain life force like Rogue from the X-MEN. Both of them have daughters (That are only seen once I might add), rob banks, got into trouble with law enforcement, gained their powers before running into the protagonists of their respective stories and worked with the major antagonists for the sake of their daughters. You know, it would be hilarious if Sucker Punch admitted that they were trying to make their own version of Sand Man, but with smoke powers instead.

I feel like this game just needed more time to flesh everything out. The story felt rushed and it was essentially "Quick get powers and then kill big bad!" when it should have been much slower giving people time to do things. Alongside that Karma should have had a bigger impact as throughout the story like you said Delsin doesn't change too much as the only big changes in the grand scheme of things are at the end with the public eye and the ending (which imo both endings were pretty good with the Hero one being sombre and the Infamous one actually being somewhat realistic to the situation). Here is hoping the next Infamous games if we get some more I hope it improves upon this stuff.

I think what would have been a great way to characterize Delsin is to have his backstory go as this. At the beginning of the game bother Delsin and his brother are against Conduits. This is a result of their parents being killed by one... Cole. Both of their parents died in the Empire City blast that gave Cole his powers. Perhaps they were on a business trip or vacation, why doesn't matter on that they died. This way it gives a personal reason as to why Delsin became a rebel. He's using his love of graffiti to cope with his parents loss even after all these years, maybe their father or mother was an artist and Delsin got his love of art from them. Delsin grows up resenting Cole for what happened, and by extensions Conduits. Then Delsin finds out he is a conduit and as the story progresses he learns more about the hardships of being one and the truth behind Cole. He finds out that Cole didn't purposefully destroy Empire City and it wasn't his fault and that Cole was a hero. He finally lets go of his rebellious attitude and starts taking responsibility for his actions and decides to become the hero that he needs to be. To honor his parents, Cole's sacrifice, and the conduits that are suffering.

He hardly learns to be more responsible, he acts the same throughout, he just accomplishes his goal the same way he intended to, not obtaining something spiritually along the way to accomplish his goal. You know after watching your videos and replaying second son it seems like it could look like the evil ending was canon before changing think about this The game is set in a fictional version of Seattle called seaport and the opening is about the same but where it diverges is delsin has an angel and a demon at his shoulders Reggie and cole macgrath whos in seaport cresting conduits The karma system could be represented by two people, good for Reggie and bad for cole, Reggie implores delsin to do things that are considered heroic while cole implores delsin does things more infamous The dup occupation is done as a way to locate and eliminate cole macgrath and by working with the dup you show that not all conduits are evil while doing dismantling them shows that your as destructive as cole You can choose to arrest suspected conduits working for cole and even recruit conduits who are likeminded in your karma rank to either help the dup or join cole The dup itself is a response to coles actions in new Marais and are a nationwide task force set up to find and detain conduits while also being ordered to kill macgrath with conduits even in their ranks who share the same goals as the dup It’s a rough sketch but even this can show the potential of what second son could have improved upon

Also, I think the starting archetype the 'Rebel' was progressed depending on what side you chose, not as a completely new entity but as an evolved one, with evil it promoted disorder, chaos, and just pure mayhem. While good was promoting freedom, justice, and other Altruistic qualities. It was more explicitly seen in the gameplay rather than the cutscenes, but it was still there. I guess rather than just bad guy vs good guy they were looking for a more idealistic aesthetic so with Infamous Second Son the two paths the "Rebel" can go is rather Egoistic Anarchism VS Altruistic Libertarianism. -Just a thought, you probably won't read it but thanks for making the video

I agree with all of your points and your explanation actually opened up my eyes a bit more about the characters. I'm glad you made these videos about the characters since you don't often see videos around deep analysis of characters in the series. I find it glaring how Augustine looked similar to my former art teacher from Elementary/Middle School, who I later grew to hate, which intensified my initial dislike towards Augustine. Uncanny Valley.

Still hoping that somehow SuckerPunch will make another Infamous game, especially with the scrapped ideas of glass and wire. I'd like to play as the paper conduit.

I think i just found another channel with thought out opinions thanks. Side note: the only funny moments i even found in the game was the billboard chick(feels rude to say but no idea on name) Delsin calls. In my sort of unique perspective I loved Infamous 1 and its easily considered the best ending plot twist ive ever seen in a game! Of course thats opinion. Sadly when it came to Infamous 2 i kindve sort of havent played it=( always wanted to but It was never in stores when i had the money. As for second son the same thing happened as with infamous 2 till playstation store dropped a sale with it at like 3 dollars and i jumped on board. Playing through the first time of course i went the pure good route and i think i honestly got too swept up in the return to sandbox Gameplay and the newness of the different powers, so much so that i didnt pay much attention to the story. Recently i finished a Bad playthrough and a little over the rush of the gameplay the story became glaringly terrible. I think maybe its a bit more terrible when your playing the evil path since nothing seems to change around you based on your choices and personally the powers are super sub par in that route. That kindve pushes you to lean to the story a bit more and every interaction along that route seems forced and out of place. Even the characters as you mentioned feel very cookie cutter and in the bad route just kindve run along on a track when Delsin decides to "corrupt" them, there isnt a conversation or argument just yep im evil your evil now ok *looks over to see a thumbs up* got it!! Sorry its long and not very thought out but keep up the good work im looking forward to the next video

Delson felt like he needed a good sequel. I also felt alternate endings should've been higher. I also think reggie makes sense to me because I had brothers like him.

You're absolutely right about Eugene. I'm a mechanical engineer, gamer, and robotics nut that went to college. I passed some ridiculous classes, including English 102, Calculus III, Differential Equations, Programming, AutoCAD III, etc. I even have all the world record high scores on the PS3 version of the video game Shatter, yet I can still maintain a normal conversation like any other person. Neither me or anyone I went to college with act like Eugene at all. We're all just regular, normal people. We don't even use big vocabulary words. I hate how society treats us like this.

I've been wracking my brain through the first two infamous games the past few days. Do you think there would be a possibility of a split in the time line since the SECOND SON is a subtitled game with infamous brand Like this Infamous 1-------------------2--------- Second son \====== Any response would be welcome Since ghost of tsushima is coming out soon do you think they will come back to The Infamous brand

I have no doubt that Second Son could be a separate timeline. And no, Sucker Punch has never returned to an old IP.

Easy. Sucker Punch takes 3 years to make a game with an established IP, and 6 or more years with a new IP. It's now been 4 years since Second Son came out and their next game is a new IP. Sucker Punch has never gone back to an old IP and even said they would rather make new games each generation than maintain a franchise until it turned stale. They saw what was happening to inFAMOUS in this generation and did the smart thing and moved onto Ghost of Tsushima.

Of course you would, because logic doesn't matter when you want something. Honestly if they aren't going to make inFAMOUS 3 (which they already said Cole deserves to stay dead), then I don't care what they make as long as it's better than this game.

Even giving a chance for Delsin to get any sort of backstory would change the whole game and the character by far but would still need some character development along the journey after all in most video games the journey is more important than the destination

As a writer myself, I agree with your points on the character development. I first played the some three(?) years ago and just finished my second playthrough two days ago--and I did it in the lens of the writer. The missing elements for Delsin is on point. He has a goal (want) but the need isn't anywhere to be proud. And the "ghost" or the backstory to tell why he and Reggie are the way they are is also missing (giving a hint to the audience leading to the big WHY would have been appreciated.) Also, the choices based on Good or Bad Karma would have benefited the storyline so much if they've been based on the misbelief/lie/inner goal/need that Delsin has--which he doesn't, unfortunately. It would've been nice to see his choices impact the world and the characters around him. Would've been nice to see the world actually change post-game based on his choices. But regardless of what kind of Karma is chosen, the world and his character remains the same at the very base.

I always had more fun playing as Cole. I always felt like an actual superhero, I always felt like I was better equipped for encounters and be stylish doing it. Delsin feels like I'm floundering and trying to be more flashy than actually effectively fighting with 1/4 of my powers at my disposal.

I know this sounds strange, but I would have preferred to have played a game with Augustine as the protagonist. Think of it, instead of “good and evil” options, there’d been “Army and Conduit” options choosing between lawful and chaotic options. The powers would have been a riot to see on screen, concrete fortified punches and jumps, temporarily creating cover, restraining downed enemies by having them sink into the concrete, and of course, lobbing wads of concrete at enemies.

Honestly, I believe there was a lot of missed potential for the story of the game as well as for the characters in it, especially Delsin and Reggie. Perhaps Sucker Punch could've at least made something simple up for their backstory by saying something like that their parents were killed in a homicide and then the police system at Salmon Bay was disinterested and unable to solve the crime. These could partly explain their personalities and life choices as I believe that with Reggie being the responsible and mature brother he would have decided to become a police officer in order to take matters into his own hands and make sure that kind of thing doesn't happen to anyone else, at least in their town, while with Delsin being the more immature and impulsive of the two, he would have simply become resented against police officers and the law enforcement system in general for not being able to do anything about it, and therefore he would go on to become a rebel who vandalises and trespasses into properties in order to go against them. In fact, this could even explain why at the beginning of the game he does that stencil of Reggie, portraying as a lazy police officer who doesn't do shit all day, as this is the image he would have of them (although this is honestly a bit of a stretch from my behalf). As for the plot itself, maybe they could have made it so that Augustine reveals her true intentions for conduits to Delsin and he obtains her power at like the middle point of the game, solving the thing with the akomish. Also I think it would have been cool to see Delsin perhaps questioning himself about his whole idea of freedom and his opposition against the opression of conduits, and wandering whether the choices that he made so far where the right ones and if it really would have been worth risking the lives of all of the conduits by freeing them from Curdun Cay, but oh well, i guess that was simply too much for you Sucker Punch.
