Inauguration of the Mariveles-Hermosa-San Jose 500kV Transmission Line 7/12/2024

Municipality of Hermosa, Bataan
July 12, 2024
As a testament to providing an energy-secure ‘Bagong Pilipinas,’ President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. leads the inauguration of the fully completed Mariveles-Hermosa-San Jose 500 kilovolts (kV) Transmission Line in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Balsik Substation Switchyard, Barangay Balsik in the Municipality of Hermosa, Bataan on July 12, 2024.
A milestone project of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), this PhP20.94 billion Energy Project of National Significance (EPNS) includes 395 transmission towers, 275.6 circuit kilometers of overhead lines, two (2) new substations and a total substation capacity of 2,000 megavolt-amperes (MVA).
The project serves as a critical backbone in providing a new high-voltage link capable of transmitting a total of 8,000 megawatts (MW) of power from power plants in Bataan and Zambales.
Prior to this event, the Mariveles-Hermosa 500kV Transmission Line was energized in March 2022. Subsequently, the NGCP energized the Hermosa-San Jose 500kV Backbone in May 2023 with an initial 1,000MW transfer capacity, which is less than a quarter of the full capacity of Lines 1 and 2. In June 2024, the remaining line was completed, allowing the facility to operate at its full 8,000MW capacity. The facility is expected to significantly improve power transmission services to 59 million households and other power consumers in Luzon.
Earlier this year, the NGCP successfully energized the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection at full capacity in January and the Cebu-Negros-Panay 230kV Stage 3 in April. Additional projects are already in the pipeline to ensure the power transmission network remains prepared to support the country’s fast-growing economy.
Joining President Marcos Jr. for a tour and inspection of the facility are Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla, as well as several NGCP officials including President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Anthony Almeda, Vice Chairman Henry Sy Jr. and Chief Technical Officer Rico Vega.
