In the name of de-nazification: Why May 9th matters for Putin's war in Ukraine

What surprise will he spring on May 9th? All eyes on Vladimir Putin ahead of what has become on his watch the most sacred day on the Russian calendar. Victory Day in World War Two means remembrance of the estimated 26 million who lost their lives while turning the tide in what is dubbed there the Great Patriotic War.

The soviets denied it until perestroika. Same thing with Katyn. People like Putin and Lavrov were educated pre-perestroika, where they heard nothing about any soviet-nazi non-aggression pact, nothing about katyn, and nothing about any holocaust of the jews (they were just more “soviet” victims).

Uzbekistan was the first country to articulate a critical position. Already in mid-March, long-time Uzbek foreign minister Abdulaziz Kamilov told the country’s parliament that the government supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and would reject any notion of recognizing the Russia-supported Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine. Soon after, however, Kamilov was reported to have fallen ill and to be receiving treatment abroad, before being transferred to the National Security Council (which some have taken to be some sort of reprimand). But Uzbekistan’s government has not rescinded his statement, indicating that Kamilov’s words stand.

You like most people have been fooled and only look at the superficial. Once Ukraine has nuclear weapons it is too late for Russia. Zalensky made his intentions known, Russia has responded. Why would any leader who wanted peace say they intend to obtain nuclear weapons when they live next to a superpower? Poor Ukraine😳 it didn’t know that saying that would cause a war😂😂😂😂😂 oh there’s nothing like playing the victim and a heap of European sharks ready to read the picture to their favour……..the west is displaying pathetic character, lucky the world is more than virtue signalling hypocrites. I think the war will last a year at least with Ukraine working to claw back the southern coast line to as far as possible to Crimea. Ukraine has fully mobilized and will not wind back their military effort. The West will continue to support Ukraine right up to including Ukraine in NATO, primarily because Russia was up front with Nuclear threats. The West will now be in a race to evaluate the military reality of this war from a weaponry perspective and there will be massive change in approach. The Russian “jumping” land mines are a real issue that needs a solution. How China adapts from this war will be very telling. Very good discussion. Thanks.

This is so sickening, Russian soldiers are part of the Butcher regime, in fact, they are not trained as soldiers they are trained killers including killing innocent civilians! I just find it embarrassing how France24 and DW try incessantly to downplay the Soviet (Russian) victory in WWII and almost seem to ridicule Russians for continuing to celebrate the victory (the most important event in modern European history). It has the smell of historical revisionism. In the "spirit" of such revisionism, there is already a memorial to Stepan Bandera in Munich (as well as those erected in recent years in the western part of Ukraine). Should we now expect further Bandera statues in Paris and Berlin?

Weren’t there other countries beside Russia that fought and defeated Nazis in WWII? It’s important history lesson for current and next generations that this May Victory in Europe Day be co-celebrated by all who fought. The Allies of Russia joyously met with them at the Oder. These images of mutuality, coordination, and teamwork represent the great struggle that was WW2. Make sure Western commemoration meets Eastern commeration; this day shouldn’t be revisionist.
