The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... “In the Heights.”
Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.
“In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.
“In the Heights” stars Anthony Ramos (“A Star is Born,” Broadway’s “Hamilton”), Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton,” “BlacKkKlansman”), singer/songwriter Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (TV’s “Vida”), Olga Merediz (Broadway’s “In the Heights”), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s “Rent”), Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s “Matilda the Musical”), Stephanie Beatriz (TV’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Dascha Polanco (TV’s “Orange is the New Black”) and Jimmy Smits (the “Star Wars” films).
Chu directed the film from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, based on the musical stage play, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and concept by Miranda. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman and Mara Jacobs produced the film, with David Nicksay and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.
Behind the camera, Chu reunited with his “Crazy Rich Asians” production designer, Nelson Coates, and editor, Myron Kerstein. He also collaborated with director of photography Alice Brooks (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and costume designer Mitchell Travers (“Eighth Grade”). Original songs by Miranda. Alex Lacamoire (“Fosse/Verdon”) and Bill Sherman (“Sesame Street”) served as executive music producers. The choreography is by Christopher Scott, who previously teamed with Chu on the award-winning “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”
“In the Heights” was filmed in New York, primarily on location in the dynamic community of Washington Heights.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents a 5000 Broadway / Barrio Grrrl! / Likely Story / SGS Pictures Production, A Jon M. Chu Film, “In the Heights.” Slated to open on June 10, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. It will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.
“In the Heights” is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive references.

Fun Fact : Most of the background dancers in the movie are the actual dancers from the original broadway show. This is a smart move when adapting musicals to a movie. Have EVERYONE in the original Broadway show to be involved in the movie!!

Another fun fact: The movie was in danger of not being produced because Lin pulled the deal for The Weinstein Company for obvious reasons. To persuade Lin and Jon M. Chu, Warner Bros took one of their backlots and turned it into a barrio with a working piragua cart giving out the tasty treat. It was shown as a presentation to Lin and he accepted the deal.

This movie was magical. Talking to my girlfriend afterwards about why it was so impactful made me realize that it’s one of the first times I can remember seeing this many black and brown people on screen for a solid two and a half hours where not a single storyline had to do with crime, prison, slavery, drug use, gangs, or segregation. No mention of any sort of criminal activity. No equating darker skin with malice or mischief. Just hardworking people of color trying to do their best to live their dreams. Revolutionary.

I have a 8 month old baby. Tonight me and my husband went to our first movie night after the baby because I HAD TO WATCH THIS MOVIE IN THE THEATER, and it was so worth it!! 2007, I came to US as a international student from Korea, my first spring break I visited NY. I watched this musical by accident (My friend and I wanted to see Lion King but it was too expensive and sold out) and it became MY LIFE MUSICAL!!! Even though I didn’t understand what the actors saying due to my poor Eng then, I became a big fan. And 13 years later, the movie came out, for 2hr 23min my heart was overflowing and full with joy and tears. This time I understood most of the words and lyrics and realized it's not just about music, dance and love stories. It's about the immigrants who works so hard for their dream, but still discriminated against. It's such a story like my husband's parents and himself had been through. I raise my thumbs up with Respect to all the immigrants especially Latinos. I hope that many people will watch this movie and will have a same heart as I do. Rise Up, Voice Up! Since when are we scared of heat?? 🙌🇩🇴🇨🇺🇵🇷🇰🇷

I work for a family cleaning and watching their children. Most of my jobs have been cleaning or doing yard work, things tough on your hands. I love to paint my nails but they never last more than a day. One day, I want to be able to afford a manicure, but even if I had the money or time it'd just go to waste. My hands have scars, calluses, they get dry and cracked, but I still paint them. Even days I clean, I wear comfy clothes I genuinely like and think make me look good. I wear lipstick. I heard that line about asserting your dignity in small ways and my heart just ached.

My favorite part is the song... "We are powerless" and it's not the meaning for electric is out but more as a people. We work hard to still be powerless. We need more fireworks in the sky. We need more women and men who are Hispanic that strive for our community. Because those people end up becoming fireworks. Celia Cruz Sonia Sotomayor etc are fireworks. But we need MORRRRREEEEE we are powerless to the youth to give them role models on how to become great men and women for the community. We all have a PART in this world and we need to play our part. The actress that played the grandmother ( Olga Merediz ) had me ballin in tears doe. She resembles every Abuela in our Hispanic community. And how we take care of our familia is demonstrated in this movie. Even from her painful walk and going up the steps... Dawg I felt her pain after a days work. Plantar fasciitis, yeah I felt that.

Also with Sonny being undocumented in this version, him even being able to legally write and use a check would be an accomplishment in of itself.

Agree to disagree. Bernstein was a genius, but his music was nothing revolutionary. IMHO, this adds much more to musical culture than WSS or other recent musicals like Wicked and so many others…. It’s not Shostakovich, but it definitely is innovative. I love all music that pushes boundaries but is not trying to hard to be weird (think Schoenberg). In the Heights mixes Buena Vista Social Club music with rap. The lyrics are right on, and the story, symbols are moving. Ok, the whole thing uses autotune, but what doesn’t these days? I don’t give many movies 10 stars, but this was one of them. Again, agree to disagree.

I love hip-hop, but the music in this movie is hip-pop. There's not a song I've actually liked a lot, except maybe the introduction. Everything is sugary, there's no tension. The ending is terribly happy and it's constantly selling us coca cola. (and I'll pass on the way it imitates La La Land constantly but never gets what is the beauty of it...) The only real hip hop musical has never been staged and it is A Prince Among Thieves, I highly advise you to listen to it and you'll see how different it is from the sugar and cheesiness of In The Heights (I've now watched the movie and my opinion is different from the one I had when simply watching this video...)

This is one of the best openings for a film musical I've ever seen. It's like an grand opera roaring to life in front of your eyes, bursting with ever more energy until its climax. This reminds me so much of the opening minutes of "Love Me Tonight" (a Paramount release from 1932). But I think this may have surpassed that in its grandeur. If the rest of the movie equals the quality of this, Warner Bros. has a runaway hit on its hands.

Shoutout to the people who complained there weren’t enough Afro-Latino representatives in this movie… you didn’t watch it did you? I was crying within the first 5 minutes BECAUSE this was the first time I’ve ever seen so many people who look like my DR Afro-Caribbean family, Ramos even said this was for a long time the ONLY opportunity for Latino and especially Afro-Latino actors to get a break on Broadway. Either you didn’t watch it, you have a VERY narrow and probably stereotypical view of what being Afro-Latino really means, you want people to prove their blackness which is messed up in 19 different ways, and lord the people who said LESLIE GRACE was “white passing” you need help. I am not a Latina nor far from my hometown but this film literally had a huge impact on me. As someone from an Asian country that was colonized by Spain for 350 years, it is very hard to find a representation in musicals. The language, the constant "I want to leave here" of Vanessa. We also had a mini store before and I used to run it with my 2 older cousins. I also love the small details in the movie that has similarities in where I grew up, the piragua (I grew up buying shaved ice with syrup in our neighborhood, we also have halo-halo and iskrambol), the fiesta, we have lots of Daniela, Carla, and Cuca here (Yes, the salon ladies are the literal salon ladies here). The vapo rub haha, and lots moreee. I hope Lin makes more, Encanto also became a huge representation for both little kids and adults here, I remember my niece being so hyped because she looks like a disney character.

Pretty sure Anthony played the main lead of the movie so he's technically not stealing the show as he owns the entire movie. I feel like Corey Hawkins' Benny will stole the show very much in the movie as the supporting character

@@15Candles could not agree more with everything you said. I knew Corey Hawkins was talented but damn, I am blown away, he is nailing Benny and making it his own, I hear Leslie Grace's Nina is also a scene stealer, so just looks like a phenom movie all around.

At first I had this anxiety thinking about, "What will this be to someone who's never seen it? Is it comprehensible with the speed and editing?" but then I think of Hamilton and how nobody gets it all the first or even fifth time, and how helpful subtitles are for rapid lyrics. So, that would be my strongest recommendation for those unfamiliar with the show. Turn on the subtitles to catch the names, Spanish, and details. Then that anxiety slipped away. The whole package started sneaking up on me. I lost it at the push shot of Usnavi singing with the reflection of the dancers in the window - this is beautiful; this is brilliant. Look at that sea of lives, snapshots of everyday America. This is going to be killer. I can't wait to see the scene when Usnavi finally asks her out in "It Won’t Be Long Now." Oh snap! Who’s that? Don’t touch me, I’m too hot! Yes! Qué pasó? Here I go! So dope! Y tu lo sabes! No pare. Sigue sigue! Did you see me? Freaky freakit! What a way to begin the weekend. Sonny, anything you want is free, man! And my dearly beloved Dominican Republic I haven’t forgotten you! Gonna see this honey, make a little money, and one day I’ll hop Jet Blue! But until that fateful day, I’m grateful I got a destination. I’m runnin’ to make it home And home’s what Vanessa’s runnin’ away from. I’m runnin’ to make it home And home’s what Vanessa’s runnin’ away from.

To be fair, the musical buildup starting at 7:02 was copied directly into Hamilton in its opening number. It's a signature "Lin" kind of buildup that makes the two musicals sound so familiar at points. That, and both musicals have themes revolving around legacy and building a future, making some of the lyrics overlap as well. They are, after all is said and done, pretty similar.

As a Bisexual Latina, little moments like 2:26, that go over other people's heads really stand out and mean the world to me. Representation MATTERS. and I am so incredibly happy to see that they layered Daniela and Carla's relationship into something romantic for the film. If I was a little girl watching this I would have felt so seen and accepted by this minute character change.
