This is the best analog vs digital comparison video I've seen. The digital mix can't compete with the analog mix. The digital mix is great but the analog mix is like HD rather than standard definition.

Analogue is more musical, more feel, it sounds more real/live even - in the box sounds more metallic. I’ve been watching lots of KZread vids like this over the past week and I must say I’m sold on the analogue. Thank you so much for taking your time to share. I would interested to hear your view on this and how you developed the skill.

Hey dude, thanks for the video! I have a few questions for you, if thats OK. Was this essentially the same mix just passed through the console with the 0db buttons engaged? Also, I kind of feel my BOX eats up reverbs a bit. Do you find that as well? Have you found your workflow to improve? How do you do hardware returns, just straight into the program bus or use a channel as an aux? Sorry for the questions, I got my own BOX a few weeks back and am kind of on the fence about it.

First off, nice equipment, but I have a point to make. Your comparing various different pieces of equipment. Were you using the emulation plugins made by UAD of the same equipment that you have? If not it may be like comparing a Bugatti to an harley davidson. Two great bikes, two type of comfort and two very different type of sound right from the get go. In essence, if someone is doing a analog vs in the box comparison, they need to use the same thing, example, the wave or uad API emulation and summing plugins vs the exact analogue counterparts. Anything else is comparing two different type of apples that will obviously not taste the same.

Hardout. I agree. Have started emulation analog in the box by using a tape machine, console and ssl channel strip emulation on each track then tape, console and compression on the mix bus and its done wonders for my mixes as far as depth, width warmth and clarity. Still don't think it would be quite as good as analog though

Can't tell which is which, both are excellent and more than acceptable in my ears. Edit - On second listen, the Bricasti is adding some extra magic. But then again, something very similar can be achieved with extra tweaking of a quality reverb plugin. and the bricasti itself is digital anyway so there goes the analog argument.

I'm considering either getting The Box or a 3124, and another 5500 & 2500 with a Dangerous Music 2 bus plus. Getting the units separately would give me four amazing channel strips plus would save me about $3000. Any insight into either route. I have an Apollo Duo (silver face) and realize I need to get another, still deciding between the 16 or 8p. Any recommendations on the best way to spend the $15k?

You can make it wide with console emulations. Then it is only a slight difference. That is why Frank Filipetti sold all his gear via look him up. However, you still need good preamps during recording as you know. Analog in the recording is much needed obviously just not huge consoles anymore. They are impressive though, I enjoyed my time in my younger days working on a Neve and Harrison! take care!

Thanks for the tests, but I tend to think that when you use mixing console instead of pc mixer and external reverb - you are just adding DIFFERENT sound processing chain than that in a DAW. No wonder it sounds differently. In fact, we can tune it to sound even WORSE than a box mix. I've noticed more clear higher frequencies in hardware mix. May be its inner circuitry boosts highs. But this effect can be obtained by eq-ing a box mix. Regards.

I believe (and this is only my opinion) that the warmth could have been achieved more in the digital if you use certain compressors. Like for me, I would go from mic to preamp to Wa76/Wa2a. That would be my vocal chain. Then you could use all the plugins for everything else until you get to the mastering stage. Once at the mastering stage I would go with a mastering Eq plugin, but right after that I would go with a hardware stereo bus compressor (like the S Style bus comp from IGS), then right back to a brickwall limiter plug such as the L2 or three. That way nobody could tell that you were mostly digital because the hybrid mix of hardware and software would be RIGHT ON POINT!!! By the way, that's my vision of how I will be running my setup. My preamp so far is the Tonebeast from Warm Audio. Thing is a BEAST!!!! You have to have a few pieces of hardware, but a 20,000 API console is definitely not the only way to get killer sound. You just need the right combination of hardware and software. No more, no less... The Warm Audio Wa76, and the Wa2a are some CRAZY pieces of hardware for the price!!! And the S Style bus compressor from IGS is thee closest thing you can get to the original SSL, FOR ONLY 800 BUCKS!!!!! After those pieces are added to your DAW nobody would be able to tell if you used a ten thousand dollar API unit or not. ESPECIALLY IF YOUR ENGINEERING SKILLS ARE ON POINT!!! Its not what you use, its how you use it!!! Well, after you go hybrid that is.

Kan Lyd Well hey man, I thought both mixes sounded great!! I felt the vocal a little back in the analog mix, but still great sounding! Interesting use of the reverb, too! I am using the console with an antelope orion. When I first got the console I tried hitting it hard to try to get some harmonic distortion, but I think it actually just collapsed my stereo field and ate the treble. This is compared to my old Dangerous DBox. I am running it as light as possible now, and am really liking the quickness of EQing and compressing in the analog world. As anything, I suppose it's a trade off... Thanks for the reply! Cheers!

Any console in the world will crap out and collapse if you push it to hard.. The most important thing to know is to set correct levels to get a healthy mix bus level.

The real question people should be asking you is, WHAT TYPES OF PRE AMPS EQs AND COMPRESSORS these sounds were recorded with? I mean, did you track with a radio shack graphic eq, and a Alesis 3630, or a Manley Passive Massive, and a Fairchild 770 analog, that is, not the awful "plugin emulations..What type of converters do you use..we all know that a high quality da/ad ad/da converter cost you up the ying yang. It's not just a simple matter of hooking up a guitar cable, and recording.

glad to know you have learned the names of some outboard gear. everything you say is irrelevant because he isn't re-tracking. this is just showing the summing capabilities and sound of the box vs digitally summing in the box. and there is a huge difference if your ears can hear it.

Sounds Great, great Job! Are we hearing both versions through the API? Is it Possible to hear both printed versions without them going through the API Console. Yes I can hear a difference! Thanks You!!

Peter Adil only the last mix is thru the API.. the first one is bounced to disk in Logic. The last mix is printed from the console mixbus.

Who cares about ITB v Analogue. Each to their own. They are different and will always be different. Most people doing these tests are biased. What i'm interested in is the song. Who is the artist? Lovely song indeed. Very uplifting and gentle.

Desk mix had more clarity and transparency....my opinion. I use Mackie 8 bus 32 Chanel/Logic Pro X. Digi 002 only for conversion at 48. Both mixes are v good desk mix seems crisper tho and clean with weight. listened on iPad Pro.

The analog mix definitely had more detail, - I think the in the box mix which sounds good would be more comparable to the analog with really good mastering with some eq just added to the sides that would open up the mix and give it more detail

in second version u put more compression. snare feels tighter , bass more prominent , and i think i used some additional stereo imaging on masterbus in v2.

@@KanlydNorge Interesting, I have an apollo 8p BF. Do you have a Silferface(MKI) or Blackface(MKII) ? I ask because man, the analog summing sounds sooo better, I know the API board is a big reason but the converters are also another side...

if your listening for a difference your missing the whole point its how the song feels , that really matters and it just feels better i might get a lil console now i saw some in the 500 dollar range i could get one and upgrade down the road so dope...

You can hear a major difference! The analog is more open and you can hear the separation! To those that say it doesn't matter? You totally wrong and you are in the wrong field! Somewhere along the lines we got lost on the art of mixing and engineering. I don't understand why people make it seem like spending time on a mix in your personal studio with good gear is a problem!!!!! Back in the days you would have to spend spend $75+ an hour plus engineering fees for a studio! I think everybody is sacrificing convenience for the true art of mixing! Ok, you may have total recall but is it a great mix? Most major releases are mixed in studios with mixing consoles! No label or artist is going to bang down your door for a mix in the box no matter how good you are?! Why would they? They can get a good computer and some plugins and forget about you......

well is hard to compare it objectively, cause obviously the analog version is louder ...the balance isn't the same. as it is analog sounds better, wider and all, but there are ways to achive that in the box.. or I belive so for now
