In the Beginning | Episode 1
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college.
On the evening of November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi was founded inside the Science Building (later renamed Thirkield Hall) at Howard University located in Washington, D.C. The founders were three undergraduates - Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Ernest Everett Just.
From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “friendship is essential to the soul“, the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto.
Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

Given that Alpha Phi Alpha’s first General President was black as night, and our founders were varying shades of brown, photos of Beta Brothers of varying shades of color.., I don’t see how “one drop of blood” or colorism existed within this fraternity. Being the only Black Fraternity on campus, and the ability to arbitrarily rejects individuals who sought membership was enough for anyone to believe that Alpha’s were elitists.

Founder Love in an interview in his later years spoke about these matters concerning APhiA but his main point was this: he said that APhiA wasn't a fraternity; it was a social club. Thus you understand why our motto is what it is. He also said that two of the undergraduate Founders were approached by APhiA at Howard to become members but he said they "turned them down flat."
