In Search of the Miraculous - PD Ouspensky on George Gurdjieff

This is a short film-documentary about a 1949 book by Russian philosopher PD Ouspensky, recounting his meetings/discussions with George Gurdjieff.
Apologies for the sounds cut out. There was an unsubstantiated copyright claim for a few minutes of classical music. I have neither the time nor money to fight this, thus I chose to delete this section.
It supports a view that 'dharma is (almost) everywhere' for those open to seeing it. Interesting questions are posed, with backdrops of revolution and war, orientalism, and later, a lesson in the dangers of guruism.

" Even a man like P.D. Ouspensky, who lived with Gurdjieff for years, could not hear the whole teaching as it was. When he wrote his famous book IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS and he showed it to George Gurdjieff, his Master, he said, “It is beautiful, but it needs a subtitle: FRAGMENTS OF AN UNKNOWN TEACHING.” Ouspensky said, “But why? - why fragments?” He said, “Because these are only fragments. What I have told you you have not heard in its totality. And whatsoever you have written is beautiful….” Ouspensky was really one of the most skillful writers the world has ever known, very artistic, very logical, a superb artist with words. So he said, “You have written well, you have written beautifully, but these are only fragments - and the fragments cannot reveal the truth. On the contrary, they conceal it. So call it: FRAGMENTS OF AN UNKNOWN TEACHING. The teaching still remains unknown. You just had a few glimpses here and there, and you have put all those glimpses together, you have somehow made a whole out of them, but it is not the truth, it is not the real teaching.” Ouspensky understood it. Hence the book still carries the subtitle: FRAGMENTS OF AN UNKNOWN TEACHING. What to say about ordinary people? Ouspensky cannot be called an ordinary person; extraordinarily intelligent he was. If fact, it was because of him that Gurdjieff became famous in the world; otherwise nobody may have heard about him. One of the great disciples of Gurdjieff, P. D. Ouspensky, was dying. The doctors told him to rest but he would not - instead he continued walking the whole night. They thought he had gone crazy. He was dying, his energy was disappearing - what was he doing? This was the time to rest; he would die sooner if he went on walking. But he would not stop. Somebody asked, ‘What are you doing?’ He said, ‘I would like to die alert, awake. I don’t want to die asleep - otherwise I will miss the beauty of death.’ And he died walking."

Your interpretation seems very sketchy, actually. Because Ph. D. Uspensky TRIED to get into Gurdjiev"s past, yet was GIVEN just fragments. Because he RECORDED ALL he heard from Gurdjiev, yet it was in PURE PROVERBIAL Oriental form far BELOW Western rationalization.

To quote Ouspensky himself in fragments or in such miraculous, Mr Gurdjieff said very clearly: "there are no geniuses, there are only sleeping machines . The word "genius" is a much overused word, which cannot be used of a particular person but only in reference to whatever influenced him. As a general rule contemporary men seem to use genius to indicate little more than "a-jolly-clever-chap, and-much-more-clever-than me. That is not what genius means.

Ouspenski was a popularizer of Gurdjieff and his work, but was not himself Gurdjieffian. Thus their split. He never understood Gurdjieff's use of the unexpected to produce conscious shocks in his students. He failed to fully attain man #4. We are here to transform our caterpillar psyche into a Butterfly Soul, by integrating our Heart, Mind and Will. When the Heart aspires, the Mind inquires and the Will conspires (combines). The insight that inspires also empowers. Self-observation = neutral observation of negative reactive self or patterns or I's. Self-remembering = being aware of being aware. Objective Consciousness = Awake = being aware of being aware - of the all-inclusive, interrelated omnipresence of the Absolute unity of Creative Intelligence underlying and permeating all relative diversity, the All in One in All. Since to seek Wisdom is the wisest thing that one can do, Wisdom is the principle thing. Therefore, get Wisdom and with all thy getting, get Understanding. As the eye is a lamp unto the body, so is perspective to the Mind. Therefore, if your (third) eye (perspective)of Life be single (all-inclusive, interrelated), then your whole Being will be full of Life, and the Light of Wisdom and Understanding. Reality = That which is/That I am. Knowledge = What is known of Reality. Understanding = knowing how to apply what is known well enough to learn and grow. Wisdom = Competence in application of Understanding. To one that has shall more be given..... Who I am (social self), changes with time, place and circumstance. What I am (essential self), changes with embodiment. Only That I am (core self), remains eternally constant, and is that from which who and what I am arise and that to which they return. Existentially, our only real choice is between unconscious compulsive reaction and conscious creative response. Namaste'.

These concepts are illusions. Thought has no access to what is real. It can't even describe a simple sound or smell, yet it effortlessly conjures up a "Heart" or a "Mind"? There is no way to that which has no beginning.

The quality of our dreams is both a reflection of our thoughts and actions as well as a general foreshadowing of the fate of our souls in the next life...A nightly, temporary karma that beckons us to change - for the good - so as to avoid a more permanent karma... Beauty(🌷)+Complexity(🌎) =Intent(❤️) The Figure 8 Analogy: An analogy on life, death, the dream-state and the symbolism intertwined within the human experience. We human beings are not traveling in the abstract motion of a straight line towards death (for instance, the numerical straight line of say 1-89). Instead, we are moving in the motion of a figure 8. The Figure 8 is a natural repeating pattern that is divided into two halves and is thus the perfect symbol to represent the human life cycle and our two primary states of existence that we are continuously moving in and out of -the Awake State and the Dream-State. When we awake from sleep we come full circle to when we fall back asleep (represented by the bottom half of the figure 8 )and when we go into the dream state we come full circle to when we awake from the dream state (represented by the top half of the figure 8 ). Upon death; the figure 8 of life untwines, but it’s not the body untwining from the mind that this analogy represents. It's two states of mind untwining to form a larger state of mind. (8-0) Because the awake state is really a state -of mind, with our body's physical reality "consciously" intertwined; and the dream-state is also a state of mind, with our body's physical reality "subconsciously" intertwined. Therefore; upon death, these two states of mind untwine to form a “larger” state of mind. A state that has all the potentialities of the dream world (flying, telepathy, psychokinesis, etc) combined with all the actualities of the awake world(nature, form, bonds, etc). This I refer to as the transitional analogy. While conceiving The Figure 8 Analogy, I realized life and death must be perceived -from one point of view- as seperate entities(the transitional analogy(8-0), but must also be perceived -from another point of view- as inseparable entities(the symbolic analogy👇), both of which are ultimately linked by the dream-state. The symbolic analogy consists of the untwined figure 8 of life/the 'circle of death’, if you will, which -abstractly- overlapps the ‘circle of life’/the Earth, with the overlappment representing the dream-state, like the common area in a venn diagram, and implies that the dream state is just as much a part of life as is of death ~by which semi-explains precognitive dreams, prodromal dreams, "visitations" by deceased relatives, etc; for the dream-state has a foothold in the afterlife, and is based on the premise that “while our body sleeps, our dream state symbolically represents the state that awaits upon our body's ultimate rest.” In other words, while we are lying down and sleeping/dreaming, this natural process symbolizes where we go when we're ultimately lying down/dead -to a place "like" our dream-state...A state "of mind” with our body's physical form+bonds eternally engrained and intertwined. ✋🏿👁~8~👁🤚🏻

of Kundalini Giorgivanitch said this: " "In so-called 'occult' literature you have probably met with the expression 'Kundalini,' 'the fire of Kundalini,' or the 'serpent of Kundalini.' This expression is often used to designate some kind of strange force which is present in man and which can be awakened. But none of the known theories gives the right explanation of the force of Kundalini. Sometimes it is connected with sex, with sex energy, that is with the idea of the possibility of using sex energy for other purposes. This latter is entirely wrong because Kundalini can be in anything. And above all, Kundalini is not anything desirable or useful for man's development. It is very curious how these occultists have got hold of the word from somewhere but have completely altered its meaning and from a very dangerous and terrible thing have made something to be hoped for and to be awaited as some blessing. "In reality Kundalini is the power of imagination, the power of fantasy, which takes the place of a real function. When a man dreams instead of acting, when his dreams take the place of reality, when a man imagines himself to be an eagle, a lion, or a magician, it is the force of Kundalini acting in him. Kundalini can act in all centres and with its help all the centres can be satisfied with the imaginary instead of the real. A sheep which considers itself a lion or a magician lives under the power of Kundalini. "Kundalini is a force put into men in order to keep them in their present state. If men could really see their true position and could understand all the horror of it, they would be unable to remain where they are even for one second. They would begin to seek a way out and they would quickly find it, because there is a way out; but men fail to see it simply because they are hypnotized. *Kundalini is the force that keeps them in a hypnotic state. *'To awaken' for man means to be 'dehypnotized.' In this lies the chief difficulty and in this also lies the guarantee of its possibility, for there is no organic reason for sleep and man can awaken" There is more than enough to keep me dreaming and as asleep without any kundalini monkey business to ad to it.

There being several millions or possibly billions of beings on this planet and I am interested to learn that you have canvassed more than fifty percent or*most* of them. Did it take you very long to canvass several millions of beings? I only know that I *have_been* dreaming on thus asleep but obviously cannot know that I*am* dreaming or sleep, because if I did, I would not be dreaming or sleep or as dear old Karl Gustav put it " in-a-fog". Anyone claiming to know that he*Is* asleep or dismembered/dreaming(anything that goes on in the explaining mind), can only possibly be either lying or dreaming, or more likely dreaming *About* dreaming; the dreaded and inescapable *About*. Semingly Giorgivanitch said than a man has two possibilities-not more; Eat or be eaten.

The first ting that struck me about Gurdjieff is how observant he was so he could see ahead as a visionairy for what's to come as i often say connecting the dots only then you could see behind the veil of perception the higher truth to give your live a meaning in an ever changing world full of hardship and deceit isn't for the ill hearted. The second thing is of cause the position he was in to do these things are coming from a source how did he earn his money isn't exactly clear so i guess he was cunning to the core.

‘In search of the miraculous’ is by far the best ‘overall’ book that I have read in the quest of ‘seeking truths’. It sets out the framework in which one can gain the further understanding which is a precondition to truly appreciate the work of Gurdjieff. I do not think that Ouspensky deeply understood some of the valuable quotations that he gave from the Gurdjieff meetings. Gurdjieff said that he ‘buried the dog’ in his books, so as to make the reader really work hard to gain sufficient understanding. However, some of Gurdjieff’s ‘secrets’ were laid bare by Ouspensky in the book ‘in search of the of the miraculous’. As I say, I do not think that Ouspensky was aware of the importance of some of the information he set out in this book; otherwise, he would have buried it. I thank Ouspensky for writing the book.

@@martinwilliams9866 There is a direct relationship between the celestial and the behaviour/actions of the thin film of organic life around the Earth. This relationship is the secret (or the ‘dog’) and ones ability to prove this relationship elevates the possibility of truly awakening. Without such proof, one is simply mechanically following what they have read without truly understanding why. Repeating parrot fashion words of wisdom is not wisdom. Knowing this secret also allows the future to be an open book; and the apparent chaotic events on Earth are shown to follow the most perfect order and can be timed to the second decades/centuries ahead

Yes, fragments of Thomas de Hartmann's piano pieces are heard here and there. But Liadov's "The Enchanted Lake" is heard at first and throughout. Delius' "Summer Evening" is also featured. Incidentally, Liadov was to have been the composer of The Firebird for Diaghilev, but his slowness exasperated Diaghilev, who then engaged Igor Stravinsky. The rest is history.
