In Search of: Gold and Gemstones (Native Dog Creek, NSW, Australia)

In this episode of In Search of... Using the fossicking maps provided by State Forests, I the search for Gold and Sapphires at Native Dog Creek . I focus on looking in crevices and using the shape of the river to find gold and sapphires. Spot the leech trying to take the limelight if you can. #fossicking #prospecting #gold #sapphire #fossickingmaps #australia

Cheers. It was a nice specimen. I'm wondering if the area is closer to the source so will go back and make a more concerted effort.

I guess watching you trying to find anything good in your classifier when it's clearly in very muddy water. But then 2 hands would have prompted you to give it a bit of a rinse before trying to find the good stuff in top of classifier. It is very hard to make videos and afford the equipment you need when it's a one man operation. That's why I've not done any yet. I have lots of equipment as I also have 2 claims myself. Gold and sapphires on both. That's why your video caught my eye, I'm trying to learn all I can as well. Which means that a person learns the good stuff as well as the short comings. I actually subscribed to see more, as what you are looking for I already have present on my claims.

The footage you are referring to is only of the clay removal stage...so very muddy water. The large rocks I removed at this point were clearly not anything other than quartz. I then take the sieve to the river and agitate it to search for the gems. The main point (unclearly made) was to remove the clay into the bucket below to then put in the sluice. That's great you have claims to prospect in earnest. Look forward to the videos.

@@InSearchOf...Australia I don't know anything about sapphires, just gold. That's the learning curve I need to accumulate more knowledge of. That's why your channel grabbed my attention. But yeah, I will be eventually "trying" to make videos.

I'll put a video together that focuses purely about the process. I'm sure others are interested. Expect it in two weeks.

It makes no sense. Silt is getting washing into the creek every time it rains heavy, so how do the frogs deal with that? The pine plantations expose bare soil to the elements which would be the source of any excessive runoff. Whereas silt from fossicking would be miniscule compared. Love the videos.

Maybe it was more the destruction of the environment. I believe it got hit pretty hard with high bankers. The restrictions do have a time limit at this point but who knows whether the restrictions will be lifted. Cheers.

I thought native dog creek was closed to prospecting due to the supposed silting up of Sewells creek downstream that is affecting frog habitat in that creek ? Best you double check before you end up having your gear confiscated .

It is closed in the Essington State forest. The no fossicking zone stops at the causeway where the public prospecting area is. In the video I show how Minview displays the no fossicking zone. The silt and trails caused by fossicking goes away from the sensitive area. Thanks for the concern though! I always double check the spots I’m going to.

@@InSearchOf...Australia I know where Native dog creek is , i've been there hundreds of times over the last 30 years , along every inch of the place . Seems strange that since Sewells creek is where the sensitive frog area is , and the whole of native dog creek runs down into Sewells creek , there are sections of Native dog that miraculously don't feed into sewells like the rest of the creek . Maybe should check when the last time the fossicking access information was updated on minview. 2019 was when the ban was put in place and all the signs put up along the creek .

Yes, that is strange but there is a definite fence line cordoning off Native dog creek in Essington State Forest with signs saying “report illegal fossicking” at the entrance to the state forest. I’m not sure how to check a specific addition date to the dynamic map but it definitely shows the prohibited zone.

I looked it up. The map says 2024.02.05. (C) 2023…so it is recent. What is even stranger is that sewells creek runs along dog rocks state forest with no exclusion zones. Who knows what the rationale is.

I looked a little deeper into it and the State forests NSW released a statement that the closure in Essington State Forest " is part of a 10-year NSW Government project to conserve the Booroolong frog and several other threatened stream species, funded by the Saving Our Species program through the NSW Environmental Trust.". "Native Dog Creek fossicking area is now closed in Essington State Forest it is to protect threatened species habitat that the fossicking is damaging. This area should be listed on your fossicking permit as a no go zone too." FCNSW. So it was specifically that area in Essington State Forest and not Sewell's Creek. Just so you know, if I had found that I was leading people to a spot they shouldn't go, I would take the video down. Thanks for getting me to check. It is interesting to find out the details.

...you could be much more productive and informative if you use both hands and actually classify and process properly. Trying to do a video that way is a wasted effort. Do it properly, put the camera on tripod or mount on head or chest. You can't teach anyone anything, if you yourself are doing it half assed.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, you are right, I am creating these videos with limited equipment and am looking to get GoPro type cameras as you suggest. I'm not sure where I didn't classify properly. Please clarify this as I put the gravel wash through both 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch sieves then put the rest through the the sluice. In saying that, it's all about being a constant learner and refinement as well as having a budget. I'll try do the full donkey next time. :P
