In Search Of: Ghost Mushrooms (Blue Mountains, Australia)

Searching for the "Ghost Mushroom", the fungi that glows in the dark. In this episode I head out into the mid-Blue Mountains to see if I can capture the luminous fungi on camera.

Very cool. A friend of mine has photographed some at Mt pilot National Park 👍

Cheers. They are fascinating. The glow worms were a bonus. Looked like little clusters of stars.

It certainly is. I wish i got there a few days earlier when it would have had a stronger glow.

Lovely. I set the camera to F8 or F11 to get depth of field then expose for 60 sec to start, adjust on moon light as I go. But aren’t they awesome things

Good tip. No moon in this case. They certainly are. I wish i caught the mass array of them while they were fresh.

The info on Australian fungi is very lacking. I have a few types here, on property. I wouldn't touch them. I bet some would! I do bet that younger ones , would be jumping my fence....

Yes, it is a mystery to most people. The essential rule is look and don’t touch. In saying that, I do want to find out how to identify edible ones.

@InSearchOf...Australia I've many happy childhood memories of 'mushrooming' in my area with family. Saturday afternoons spent searching and selecting only the best. Mum would rinse, peel, and rinse again. Cooked with pure butter, salt & pepper in a hot pan. If you ever make your way west of Orange, flick me a message. I would be happy to show you the edible ones, and have a bush cook-up! 🙌🏽😁

Will do. I am keen to be able to recognise the edible mushrooms. I often see what I believe are Saffron varieties but can't be sure so won't touch them until someone shows me directly. I imagine I will eventually work my way further west as I'm now focusing on the Bathurst region for prospecting and will widen my scope.

@InSearchOf...Australia Puffballs are edible, when VERY young. Very delicate and tasty. If cooking, 30 seconds on each side. Max. In butter. Or, a soggy grease soaked mess. I just eat them raw, mostly, in salads or on a sandwich. I am lucky enough to have big ones. Up to size of tennis balls. I take care of the patch and have got 2 more lots for trial. They do not store more than a day or two, so never will be a market product. But they are delicious.

@@nancycurtis7315 Sounds interesting and tasty. Is Puffballs the proper name?
