IN PURSUIT OF FREEDOM

Спорт

Sometimes, life changes quick and it's never the same again. This trip to the Dominican Republic was to dig into the story of Richard, what happened, the perspective switch and how he lives now!
He brought some friends along, @renoromeu, @matchu_lopes & @oliviarjenkins to help loosen things up and enjoy navigating at the mercy of the winds.

Frankly, I'm about done watching videos of people with all the money and time in the world. It would be nice to see some videos about giving something to the impoverished locals - teaching them to become instructors rather than focusing on a crew of wealthy kids jetting around the globe to catch the wind and hang out on the beach. For a non-motorized sport, how much jet fuel is Duotone buying every year?!

You could tell how wealthy they are from watching them kitesurf? How dare anyone do well, I guess misery loves company

@@truthhurts3896 Yes, he could infer that they come from very privileged backgrounds and have been heavily carried through life to be able to have the time and money to buy in to this sport with entry level equipment prices comparable to a decent used car; as well as enough free time not working demanding jobs (which for the majority, involve long hours) to earn enough money to go off on a boat in an exotic location for an extended time bumming on the beach and kitesurfing as much as they like. Clearly, they're much better than average at this expensive sport. But in order to get that good, they need to practice a lot and have very few commitments to be able to go out when the best conditions are available. Not to mention, live near vast beaches (usually expensive areas). These are all luxuries simply not available to the vast majority of people who ever get to a position where they can actually afford to get into kitesurfing. The only short hour, flexible 'job' I'm aware of that pays that well is 'Shareholder'. Again a pretty steep cost of entry to make big money on that 'job', not to mention potentially precarious if you don't have a lot of significant backup income streams and aren't very well connected to other very wealthy people. The only realistic conclusion here is Trust Fund Babys. And I agree with James that it's a bit tiresome and shallow glorifying over privileged people for being lucky to not have to worry about putting food on the table, gas in the car and the responsibilities most have to maintain in order to do so.

More hours= more money to buy equipment and better holiday destinations, clearly you need to rethink your career choice as a unpaid social justice worker

@@truthhurts3896 I mean, you've just deliberately avoiding actually counter-arguing my point in a poor attempt to be snide and snarky, but, hey whatever brightens your day. Let me re-iterate in simpler words: Well paying jobs (for the majority) demand high levels of responsibility, which in turn, often reduce the flexibility in your weekly schedule and require longer working days to meet the deadlines. Much of the money earned from that we'll paying job must go towards essentials like shelter, food, warmth etc before kitesurfing (gear or holidays), unless you have trust funds or someone else paying your way. This was the crux of my point (and I believe, James point). The 'all in the time in the world' and frankly expensive life style being potrayed here is simply an impossibility for all but the most priveledged of people. Even if they can afford to go to the best kitesurfing destinations in the world, learn to sail and charter a boat between them and a few others for even a week thanks to a well paying, hard earned career (I'm a Medical Engineering btw. I take it you're the 2 day/ week Tea Boy in your daddy's law firm being over paid as a 'Legal Assistant' with a lofty expenses account for some extra tax breaks?), they can't just vanish to the beach for a month whenever the best winds are in. There's responsibilities their employer needs their skillset to cover and only so many others trained to do it. That's why so many kitesurfers are middle people with professional careers or running a good trade business 'mowing the lawn' and doing fairly simple tricks most of the time. They're the bulk of self-made people who can afford it, but would never have the time to practise to get to that advanced a level anyway. Nor could they afford the risk of a serious injury that would keep them off work for a week or more.
