Hi Marlene from Ontario, Canada. I have my sewing patterns printed at a copy shop. I trace the patterns with medical examination table paper (from amazon) so that my Master copy stays in one piece. I can then make alterations with the traced pattern. This allows me to keep the Master in case I gain or lose weight and my measurements change. This has saved me money not having to reprint the patterns. I love your haircut! i am currently knitting on Lento 3 and hoping to start my spring/summer knitting and sewing plans.

Yes, this! It is a extra step but saving your master copy gives you many options in the future. Hacking the pattern, making a size bigger or grading in between sizes. In the Netherlands I pay 2,95€ per A0 in black and white. Check out the Hinterland dress and the Ogden cami. Fun patterns to start with from the indi sewing community ☺️

I have heard about this hack before but haven’t found the right tracing paper yet, but I might try it out with my next couple of patterns since it does sound like such a useful thing to do! Thank you both for your recommendations

Any paper that is thin enough to see the pattern true will do in the beginning. And any store that sells thread, fabric or other sewing related items should have it. It wil cost between 2-5€ for a roll. It really is a basic necessity ☺️

I recently got bangs as well and the confidence you get from a fresh new haircut. ✨ I don’t have a favourite sewing pattern yet but I’m looking to start sewing with the Bi_Classic by b-patterns. 👖 There is a sewalong video that explains every single step, discusses alterations and if you should make a first sample before diving into you favourite fabric for it. So I think it will be a great first project. ☺️

Favorite pattern: Sade Blouse by Named Clothing, i have it in a dark blue muslin, it's elegant, playful, feminine, and party in the back. I love following your knitting and sewing journey, and the last couple of weeks/months you've lit up, I can see quitting academia and following your passion in your job has given you energy, you radiate it in your videos! Be you and keep that spark, Marlene 😊

Love that you are learning to sew, it's the best! Two of my favorite sewing patterns are the Free Range Slacks by Sew House Seven and the Morgan Jeans by Closet Core Patterns. The jeans were a long project and I bought the class to help me along, but so fun to finally have jeans that fit me well, I'm planning to make another pair this year at some point. I'm waiting on some linen to make my third pair of Free Range Slacks. I just bought the Chanterelle Pants by Sew Liberated to try at some point this year as well, but I've never made them.

Thank you for the super cozy vlog Marlene! I am starting my sewing journey as well, so I haven't made a ton of sewing patterns. But my favorite pattern so far is the Aimee Bag by Mipi The Label. I have made 4 Aimee Bags and I love them. The pattern gives options for three sizes and a lot of other customizable options. I recently got in some new yarn to finally start an Agnete Cardigan. A project that has been on my wish list of a long time now, and I finally have the patience to start such a time consuming knit. I think the Pigeon and Wishes buttons will look lovely on my future dark grey Agnete.

To a beginnier sewer, honestly, start with patterns that have very good instructions. Bellalovespatterns has the best I have come across, but her stuff is pretty advanced, though the instructions really are so good I think a beginnier would be fine with the more simple ones. I think Elizabeth Zusanne would be up you alley, she has simple linen projects that look so sleek, I love her culottes. Do avoid style Arc, they are super popular, but their instructions suck big time. Go for smaller indie designers that have a few patterns over the bigger companies, the amount of care put into creating the patterns is so different. Sewing is the best, you will be so glad you took up this hobby!
