lyrics: ANYA They said I was found By the side of a road There were tracks all around It had recently snowed In the darkness and cold The wind in the trees A girl with no name And no memories, but these Rain against a window Sheets upon a bed Terrifying nurses Whispering overhead “Call the child Anya Give the child a hat” I don’t know a thing before that Traveling the back roads Sleeping in the wood Taking what I needed Working when I could Keeping up my courage As foolish as it seems At night all alone in my dreams In my dreams Shadows call There’s a light At the end of a hall Then my dreams Fade away But I know it all will come back One day I dream of a city Beyond all compare Is it Paris? Paris A beautiful river A bridge by a square And I hear a voice whisper “I’ll meet you right there In Paris” Paris You don’t know what it’s like Not to know who you are To have lived in the shadows And travel this far I’ve seen flashes of fire Heard the echos of screams But I still have this faith In the truth of my dreams In my dreams It’s all real And my heart has so much to reveal And my dreams Seem to say “Don’t be afraid to go on Don’t give up hope Come what may” I know it all will come back One day

I find it heart breaking when she says there is a light at the end of the hall, because if you take it in the sense that when the door to the basement of the Romanov execution was performed the light came streaming in from the hallway in front of her. Freedom was so close to them in that light and you can almost see them reaching out to it and now I made myself sad lol.

@A C The Broadways show is very much loosely based on what actually happened to the Romanov's and of course the 1997 film. It never said or tried to sell itself as factual, so it's aloud to take creative adjustments like moving where the family were actually killed to aging up Anastasia so's she's in this story in her mid to late 20s as opposed her her being younger, which wouldn't make sense in this show as it's whole premise is that she survived her families massacre therefore of course she'll be older and not 17 as she was when escaped the firing squad and survived (within this story). It's not a disastrous change if you're purely paying attention to the show and not constantly fact checking it against history.

I love how visual the songs are. They all tell a story using images. "Rain against the window, sheets upon the bed, terrifying nurses whispering overhead" I could just picture a room with a line of metal framed beds and a cheap mattress, a wall of windows and nurses in their old fashioned uniforms whispering over a young girl sitting with her arms around her knees on the bed. And my favorite line "I've seen flashes of fire and the echo of screams" Picturing a fire in the ballroom with screams echoing in my mind. It's amazing. The originals and the additions are just amazing. In A Crowd Of Thousands (my favorite song on the soundtrack) is an entire visual story. It makes this soundtrack very special.

For the line "I've seen flashes of fire and the echoes of screams" I've always interpreted as she was in the room where her family got executed. The flashes of fire could have been the gunshots firing from the gun in the dark, and the echo of screams as her family is screaming trying to run away and their voices were echoing from the walls of the basement

Me too!!! She's literally like the sweetest and most genuine person I've ever met; you meet her for the first time and she immediately acts like you're best friends. I actually got to meet her twice and it was amazing both times. She's super nice and positive and automatically just like connects with people and I was so excited because that's how I am too; I love people way too much and I consider everyone my friend, and I'm optimistic about literally everything, so it was cool to find another person like that! (By the way I don't mean for that to sound braggy about myself; in fact, I know some people are annoyed by those qualities about me. And honestly Christy's probably a lot better at it! I'm just saying it was cool to find someone else like that 'cause it's kinda rare.) Anyway, I'm glad you guys got to meet her too! :D ~:~

This song, and the musical in general has teach us that Anastasia is a very-very-very STRONG lady. We see how her life has U-turned from a royal princess who enjoy all privileges and the best services in the world with a good and lovely family into a lonely street rat who live by herself in a very harsh enviroment, and she survive for ten years! Yes, she no longer know who she is, and she live under Bolshevik's custody for ten years. But her body and mentality never used for hard life alone in the gutter. And even the Bolshevik still feed the royal family well during their life in custody. And the more intriguing is? She actually still have a set of jewelry that she can sell it to earn money and buy food and live a better life. But instead, she's stubborn enough not to sell it and choose a harsher life. Or maybe she sell it so she can survive in the past ten years, while those jewel she showed to Dmitry and Vlad are the remaining jewel that she's yet to sell? Who knows?

to any wandering commenter: the reason "in my dreams" and "santa fe" might sound similar is because they have essentially the same note progression in the chorus!! while christy mostly sings "re fa mi", jeremy mostly sings "sol fa mi", (tho christy does that @ 2:54 ) but it's still strikingly similar!!! (and they both end on the same syllable of "sol.")

i love how visual the song is.. :) ex, i can imagine when Anya talks about Paris she’s in a market place wondering the streets and sees a man painting a picture of Paris and she asks “Is it Paris?” the man says, “Paris.” then when she says, “I’ve seen flashes of fire-“ i can picture the market place burning down and her rushing to grab that painting of Paris. and finally in the end she reaches Paris with the painting in hand. idk it’s just what i thought lol

ANYA They said I was found By the side of a road There were tracks all around It had recently snowed In the darkness and cold The wind in the trees A girl with no name And no memories, but these Rain against a window Sheets upon a bed Terrifying nurses Whispering overhead “Call the child Anya Give the child a hat” I don’t know a thing before that Traveling the back roads Sleeping in the wood Taking what I needed Working when I could Keeping up my courage As foolish as it seems At night all alone in my dreams In my dreams Shadows call There’s a light At the end of a hall Then my dreams Fade away But I know it all will come back One day I dream of a city Beyond all compare Is it Paris? Paris A beautiful river A bridge by a square And I hear a voice whisper “I’ll meet you right there In Paris” Paris You don’t know what it’s like Not to know who you are To have lived in the shadows And travel this far I’ve seen flashes of fire Heard the echos of screams But I still have this faith In the truth of my dreams In my dreams It’s all real And my heart has so much to reveal And my dreams Seem to say “Don’t be afraid to go on Don’t give up hope Come what may” I know it all will come back One day
