In Memory of my Dad
I lost my incredible dad, Dermot Martin to stage 4 prostate cancer in October. He was diagnosed in July this year and began treatment but unfortunately it didn't work and he passed away at home on 05/10/23. A month has passed and we are still in shock but I wanted to mark today with a tribute to him on my KZread channel. He was my biggest cheerleader and loved watching my vlogs (which I always thought he'd find boring but he was so interested) so it felt right to share his life with you and tell you more about the man he was. I wouldn't be studying medicine without him, be it him encouraging me to be interested in science and the world around us, helping me with quadratic equations at the dining room table for my A levels or him telling me to keep applying for medicine and never give up. I owe so much to him.
His requiem mass was live streamed last weekend and you can watch it here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnqts9ByorieeLQ.html
featuring an incredible Eulogy by my dad's friend Ed (13mins15), one of my best friends Tara sings beautifully "Who Knows Where the Time Goes - Sandy Denny" and straight after I read my poem (1hr7mins)
He was feautured (and even on the front page of) a few newspapers when he passed away:

Thank you guys for the lovely comments, I hope you enjoy learning a bit more about my dad and his incredible life.❤ I am planning to keep going with 4th year as in his last few weeks dad kept telling me to "stay strong and focus on my career". Thanks a lot dad, easier said than done! 😂 Somehow I did manage to pass my 8 week psychiatry placement.. it was a struggle but luckily psychiatrists are usually quite understanding people who like to talk! I'm still taking things a day at a time but I hope to be back with some med school vlogs very soon. I'm doing more regular updates on my insta (@lydiamartinmedic) Lots of love, Lydia xxx
Anyone would have been proud to have your dad as their own. He seemed like a loving father❤ You were blessed to have him. When you have your children, you will be able to share all your lovely memories with them. Great video.
Im just making my way through all of your videos. He seemed like such a sweet man in your vlogs, and very funny. So sorry for your loss ❤ Make him proud

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss, Lydia. You're an inspirational young woman, and will have an exceptional career as a Doctor. When I've experienced a close loss, I've felt enveloped in a massive amount of love from those who've passed and feel them every day in my life - in many respects the love is stronger without them here. With that amazing feeling of love behind us, we can't go wrong. Please take care x
