excellent speech. Her commitment was obvious, and the government clearly has the will to carry out the necessary reforms, unlike the previous government, which was more concerned with private wealth preservation for themselves and their cronies.

Superb speech. You can choose to be inspired by what Rachel Reeves is saying and create new opportunities for yourself in the economy she envisions. These opportunities create markets, which generate revenue, leading to salaries that drive increased spending in the UK economy. As a result, the entire system heats up nicely, fostering growth.

But is not just passing planning...there are endless sites with planning permission for housing but the developers don't build,...because its not financially viable at the moment ,. they know they cant get the labour, materials are expensive, then buyers cant afford them anyway...they need to put pressure on developers to progress sites with permission granted.

One of the most impactful things they could do is spend government money amoungst more, smaller companies. The large corporates take the vast majority which employs less people and hands more to shareholders. Small to medium business have higher levels of skill, less waste and less shareholder interest. That also means more income tax paid back with higher income spread across more people. This is an easy, quick win. As for building loads of new homes, developers will build houses as long as the demand is high...i.e. unaffordable homes. A different approach is needed to just unlocking planning.

@srp01983 simple reply my leftwing extremist friend. Janet Yellen and powell, gord Brown 'no more boom and bust', the inflation is transitory. More qualified, more data and still screw up. 10 economists in a room at least 20 theories and 0 to 20 will be right. Given labour's history with brown and actual experience of labour cracker economics certificates.. I think thw sway of evidence is far against her. Only an msc as well... pretty poor pickings if she is the best labour can call.upon. Good job carney is coming to help, at least he can be the adult in the room. Fml what an idiotic reply.

your statistics are false, and probably come from Facebook or the daily Mail. There are not 5 million immigrants on welfare benefits, and your gdp figure is so ridiculous it is not even worth considering. The biggest single factor in loss of GDP is the effect of Brexit and the lack of foreign investment since 2021. Visas issued over the last two years have only been issued to people who have come here to work and pay taxes. And while unprocessed asylum seeker numbers have increased (under the Tories of course, who have failed to process them) they are actually a drop in the ocean in real terms, and receive only a very small subsidy. Stop believing all the nonsense the racists tell you.

This a bitter disappointment. Having suffered 14 years of an economic model based on little more than immigration, house building and related consumer spending I was hoping for something more ambitious than a bigger slice of the same! Is this really all we got for our votes? The opportunity is there to remodel the economy to meet the huge challenges of climate change. There is nothing sustainable about the constant building of large numbers of low quality housing which barely satisfy the very weak regulatory standards. The construction soaks up vast amounts of carbon producing materials such as brick, concrete, plastics and tarmac with a waste percentage which would be simply unacceptable in any other industry. It’s hugely frustrating and disappointing that we’ve gone through all of this just to find that our only way to achieve economic growth is to build over yet more of the country.
