In Focus: A former serial drug offender tells how he finally broke the cycle of addiction

"All my daughter wanted from her father for her birthday was for me to carry her. And yet I could not do it." Having grown up among drug abusers, former serial offender Bruce Mathieu tells CNA that he was simply trapped in the cycle of addiction, leading to one prison stint after another in Singapore. Now, he's determined to help others avoid making the same mistakes. Read CNA's in-depth look at the impact of parental drug abuse on their families: cna.asia/2D6NzQw

Whatever happened, the most important thing is that he did not continue and then destroyed his family in the process. Which is what happens to so many addicts. His daughter should be proud of him and forgive him. Remind each other every day that you love him or her, and that is the best of all drugs. You will see.

man that was strong. I've been told that addiction runs in the family. well i think it's hidden deep inside of us. it's just whether we show and get caught or we don't.

To be cured of addiction is good. Prevention is always better than cure. Bringing down drug cartels and pushers should be the primary interest of anti-drug operation. Stop them before they influent others.

All the best to Bruce and may his faith, family and inner will continue to help him stay clean and focused. Am surprised he speaks very good English and with a slight ang moh accent. Watch him deliver his motivational speech on KZread. There's a halfway house down the street from where I lived where the residents there are let out supervised on a particular day every week to visit a place of worship. They don't look or behave like they want a second chance or wish to integrate into society.
