In-depth how-to on the Air Force PT test | Elora Jean

Watch me take the Air Force PT test (and disappoint myself!)! I'm bringing this video to you all after receiving soooo many questions about the test, if it's hard, how to train for it, etc. I hope this answers some of those questions! But if you have more, at least you can ask in the comments and everyone can see there. Hope you enjoy!

FYI, those “chances” you get after failing a PT test come with administrative consequences. Refer to AFI 36-2905. Just letting you all know before you get a false sense of reality. PT tests are serious, and failing multiple times can lead to involuntary administrative separation. Good luck to all of you joining!

This is kinda how I passed my final PT test in BMT back in 2008. My friend at the time told me he wasn't going to allow me to fail and he told me to run with him and match his speed the entire time. That man helped me obtain an 11:45 run time which I was never, ever able to pull off again during my tenure as an Airman lol. I'm forever grateful to him.

I agree with some of the comments. In order to get a better run time is strength training girl. Work on the legs! Let the legs carry you so you don't get fatigued as fast. Upper body & lower body. At least 3 days a week who know you might end up liking it an ho more than 3 days. My run sucked so bad, an I deadicated my time to Strength training and a lot more improved than just my PT scores. So take it from a fellow airforce sister! It will help.

You can always prepare physically and make that aspect a bit easier but mentally, that's a bit tougher to train for...as far as how they mentally reshape you from a civilian into a US Airman. It's one of those things you just have to adapt to on the spot. You can do it though, countless women/men through the years have done it and as brutal/scary as it may seem in boot camp, one thing you really learn is that you're capable of more than you ever realized. So never give up.

Earth Day you will receive paperwork and your leadership will be notified, which reflects kinda poorly on you. They might make you take remedial exercise classes in order to help get you prepared, and then you’re required to take it again. If you fail again...I’m not sure how that goes because people usually pass their second try 😅 it’s not good. You c an be kicked out for not being physically ready

Did AFROTC a couple years back. We did the PT test twice a semester if I recall correctly. I'd get around a 95 every time and I was pretty average physically. The hardest part is definitely the running. It took about 9 minutes to run the 1.5 mile. We had one guy in our wing who could run the 1.5 literally in 7 minutes. He was pretty much able to sprint the whole thing, I have no idea how he did that. The Air Force had it pretty easy at least compared the Marine guys, they have to run 3 miles. On top of that, they frequently did ruck marches around campus super early in the morning way before we even started our PT, and we did PT at 6:00am 3 times a week. I love the Air Force tho. Although I was impressed with how much rougher and tougher the Marine and Army cadets seemed I really didn't care. I was so proud to be an Airman. I only lasted one semester, I got dropped from the program because I have tattoos on my fingers and neck...😞

You can run faster by how they do in track at the very end where they run with their hands behind you, it makes you run faster

Back in my day, after reporting to my permanent duty station, I had to cover a 1.5 mile distance in less than 18 minutes once a year. That was too easy. You could almost walk it and still pass. I set a personal goal of doing the 1.5 miles in less than 10 minutes. It took me several months of trying, but I was able to do it. I had to experiment with different strategies. Do I run fast at the beginning or save my energy for a sprint at the end. That was 40 years ago. I know my ticker would not be willing to do that today.

What tests do you have to pass to get into the Air Force? I know there’s the ASVAB, but is there any other one?

Do you receive more points for categories that you max out before the time? For example: if I got my mile run down to 8 mins…would I get extra points?

Dear Elora, So I will be leaving for Basic literally in less than 5 days :O so I have been trying to stay as positive as I possibly can. My point is I have been pretty worried about how i will perform physically because I'm really not that great or prepared in my opinion. So my question just for something to go off of, about how many sit ups/ push ups could you do when you first entered BMT?

My family genetically has some kind of joint problem in the elbows where they can not go straight(if I put my arms flat on a table my wrists are 2-3 inches off the table) once I get to the third push up my elbows start cracking(not breaking) and it sounds gross and it does hurt a lot, like its pinching the nerves. My mom was in the army and managed to do a lot, but that was because she had her arms reset when she was younger.
