💡Tip: Using a variable temperature kettle when learning to brew tea can extremely beneficial when determining the best temperature for each different type of tea. Start with a lower temperature and slowly increase the temperature and brew time to find your desired taste preference.

    I never dreamed I would have watched an 18 minute video on tea kettle - I usually skip around and cut to the chase. But I was so fascinated with the details that I forgot to fast forward! I’ve had my eye on the Stagg, and your video confirmed my choice. I’m just waiting for my old T-Fal to finally quit on me, so I can justify the expense! Thanks for a great video.

    So glad I saw this. My high schooler is very into tea and just bought the Fellow Stragg. He saw a few reviews that were for it's use for pour-over and I was slightly skeptical considering the price. On the other hand I love the design and will be happy to see it on our counter as opposed to the others that are ugly! So happy the features are top notch AND that you like it for tea!

    Thanks for sharing, the ability to pour fast and slow is a huge point. I now have two fellow kettle for that exact reason. One in the video to pour slowly (for raw Pu-erh) and the triangle spout (for ripe pu-erh) so the oxo does two in one when it comes to pouring. Thanks for sharing

    I emailed Fellow to ask about the plastic in their kettles and they mentioned a silicone gasket on the temp gauge. Is that not visible in your model? Or do you think it’s changed since you purchased yours? It’s so frustrating trying to find a plastic-free kettle, especially since so many listings don’t even show you the inside, much less discuss it. Thanks for your review.

    This is an absolutely excellent comparison/review of these kettles!. Wish I'd seen it earlier, it would have cut my decision process by several hours. Love how thorough you are, down to details and demonstrating pours. Thank you so much! btw, re higher wattage and faster boil time on Oxo...I've wondered about the physics involved. In other words, just because the water is bubbling doesn't mean the consistent internal temp of the water is consistently boil temp. for ex, you can bring a cup of water to bubbling in the microwave and discover that it's not actually boiling temp throughout. So...maybe the incredibly slow time of the Stagg to work its way through final few degrees up to temp is necessary in order to achieve an accurate temp throughout the water??

    I thought my Bonavita broke after 5 years of daily use, but it turns out the contacts just needed a quick cleaning; now it's good as new. As a replacement, I wanted something without plastic on the inside, but I also wanted a comparison to what I have already. After some basic research, I narrowed down my options to the OXO and the Stagg. This helped a lot; thank you, Jeffrey! If my Bonavita ever does die on me, I'll know what to get next.

    If you don’t need preset option it is another great option at those price points and may be a better option then Bonavita. Though the oxo would be slightly better IMO and the fellow the best.

    @@JeffreyMcIntosh thanks for the quick helpful reply! may i ask you what makes the Oxo better? (given the near-double price point, or maybe 1/3 more at sales) (incidentally, on preset, since it assumes the same temp from last time unless i change it, that's good enough for me).

    New to your channel, glad to be here. Nicely done. Do you think accuracy of temperature by the kettle is a factor? Also, would you ever want to talk about the difference in temperature as water goes from kettle and gaiwan? I’m thinking I’m steeping my white tea at 90C, for example, but it’s really 80C in the gaiwan. Bigger steeping vessels must retain heat longer. Or pouring the next steep while the vessel is still hot from the previous. Factors like that. I’ll check out your other videos. Thx! Oh, btw, I have 3 OXO, but I do like the non-kitcheny Stagg look better.

  • @JeffreyMcIntosh

    @JeffreyMcIntosh

    That is a great question. The gooseneck, does slightly lower the temperature more then a non gooseneck, a more important consideration is to ensure you are preheating your Gawain to help from a large variation in temperature. For ripe Pu-erh (which needs a higher temp) I use smaller pour sprout kettles to keep the temp higher. I have both Fellows: Gooseneck for Raw Pu-erh and Corvo for Ripe Pu-erh

    I don't think Stagg would necessarily be an upgrade. My 2 (3?) cents: 1. it has poor quality control. I see people mention broken Staggs a lot. I went through two of them and both had manufacturing defects. Customer support seems very good though, they usually replace them without issues 2. it has poor firmware. I had it barely for a week and already have seen weird blinking on the display. It could be also symptom of the manufacturing defect above but I've seen other people mention it as well 3. the display has poor viewing angle, enough that you need to think about that while placing the base (sorry if repeating some points from the video, was just rewatching selectively now)

    Design over function. They’re fine for boiling water but not very controlled for exact temperature settings or pour-over coffee or loose-leaf tea. The lid button can get annoying and not work correctly.
