Here's the keyword paragraph you've all been waiting for. Styling new outfits can be hard, but the big purr machines know what's got claws. If your closet is full of pieces that do not include leopard print, I can spot a problem there buster and also you should start using the word wardrobe, it has big cat energy. How to layer leopard print is a phrase you might be searching, so here it is in print (get it) so you can find this video and get some outfit inspiration and new / fashion / ideas. Sustainable fabrics are the fabrics that already exist, so conserve your sanity and our furry neighbours and shop second-hand. Or Thrift, if you're American. Which you could be.

I often wear it in smaller prints that are a bit faded/muted looking, so it doesn’t look ‘loud’. Wear it bold and loud and you can channel punk vibes. Wear it soft and it’s a ‘grunge’ staple. I’ve got some faded leopard print boots that look amazing with washed-out grey skinny jeans and a slouchy jumper, grunge heaven. I think varying the ‘intensity’ of the print gives you absolutely loads of options, depending on what kind of aesthetic brings you joy.

I've kind of always had a subconscious bias against leopard print. I probably labelled it "tacky" at a young age and avoided it because I haven't owned anything in that print for at least 10 years. However, this video was really interesting and made me question exactly why that is. I'm unlikely to try and get into something that I have no experience in but at least now I have more to think about.
I am reminded of my 2nd class teacher who’s favorite pattern combination was leopard print with black/white stripes. Every day was a variation of this combination

I started watching this video while getting ready thinking 'leopard print so isn't my aesthetic' and then realised halfway through that I was literally wearing a velvet embossed leopard print skirt lol. For me the print being in the texture is a great way to wear this subtly!
I got completely put off wearing leopard print after someone had a massive go at me for wearing it ‘ it’s no better than wearing fake fur ‘.... the same person wore leather look boots and leather look jackets on the daily. *pause to take that in* I’m just telling myself they were jealous that I pulled it off better than them. 😂

I effing love leopard print in all its forms. Took me ages to get the right pair of leopard print ankle boots but they’re with me now, in pony hair 👌🏼 When I last saw my cousins who live in Scotland, one of them mentioned that she had a leopard print coat that was too big for her but she thought it’d fit me. She was gonna give it to me but then somehow that didn’t happen - that was three years ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. I’m going up to visit and stay with her in august, praying to the print god’s she still has it and wants to give it to me 🐆

I had a leopard print knit T-shirt as my go-to “special” print I wore for interviews or dates and I usually paired it with red lipstick. It reminds me of adventure and bravery, while the T-shirt silhouette was practical and comfortable. This combination made me feel like my best self.
I’ve been wearing leopard print masks, largely because they were the only ones that Gap had (other than dark blue) when I was looking at options way back when. Had never worn leopard print before that, but I found that I absolutely loved wearing it. Have since considered leopard print sneakers, and a leopard print cardigan. I can feel myself changing.
Leopard print is a neutral in my book and wear it with anything - especially shoes.

When I was in my 20s, I thought leopard print was for fancy, older people ... now that I am in my 30s, I feel like if I wear leopard print, I would be perceived as trying too hard, to look hip and young, "How do you do, fellow kids? This is lit, fam!" Clearly, I am wrong about leopard print, because Leena looks fabulous in every shot. I don't know though; I'd still feel like an imposter in it.
The actual leopards with flowers print! Love it.
Goddamn I wish I had pictures of my leopard print prom dress. 2006 me was so cool.
I have been in the leopard print closet (enclosure?) for years repressed by .... . I’m now in my sixties and I’ve come out! Hahaha I have a tea dress in green print, a fab pair of ankle boots, a belt, a scarf, a prim midi dress with small print and just recently a glorious full on leopard print dress. I just love it and i think it can look real classy, lovey! In praise of this great print that brings joy! Thank you for this video.
I love leopard print. It actually makes up a decent chunk of my wardrobe. I wear it as a neutral of sorts and chuck things with it. Last month when I was at a day hospital having surgery I wore it which all the posh grannies who were moaning about masks gave me funny looks 😂 Mind, I was at least 40 years younger than the surgery's usual patients which is maybe why it was also unusual 🤔
Time to admit that I have also spent way too much time dissecting the why (and why not) or having leopard print in my life. I believe that you just cured me of all the fears and reservations with that dress with the strutting leopards. That’s it! That is the one I’d wear.... proudly.
"tacky, like hell is always other people" is my new favourite statement
I have 3 pajama sets that are leopard print (2 which have matching robes). I also used to buy leopard print Snooki Slippers secondhand (not a Snooki or Jersey Shore fan, just loved the print & how the slippers felt when wearing them for a few months; they eventually each fell apart & I had to throw them out, which has to be terrible for the planet). I even have leopard print luggage. But MOST importantly, I have multiple home decor items (mugs, trays, pillows, posters, a duvet cover, etc) that are leopard print or cheetah print, and they're in different colors. And I plan to get more when I move. I even want leopard print wallpaper as an accent wall in my future bedroom. Leopard print is one of my many "things".
When I was 11, I had a leopard print top from GAP, and its one of the first items of clothing I remember loving, so I wore it all the time. So, essentially, I now wear leopard print for my childhood self; my messy, untamed, wore clothes because SHE liked them self. Fashion can get too serious sometimes, so I like to keep some leopard print around as a sort of mental medicine.
My first favorite first character in leopard prints was Halle Berry in the Flintstones movie, I adore her and her outfits. I do want to put out the centuries old white supremacist, orientalist, imperialism of Africa, displaying slaves in zoos of England dressed in pelts, how that has shaped our fashion and media culture till today. You also touched a bit on class warfare, but it also is definitely a big part of why something is tacky until it’s elevated by designers (although that also has a lot to do with race and culture appropriation as well).
Here for it. At 52 I am graduating in leopard print, couldn't think of a better thing to do. Found you as I am thinking about publishing roles (as a dinosaur) having got a Journalism degree after leaving administration type jobs. Leopard print is a safe option for those of us who (me) are afraid of bold colours but want to add some interest to outfits, I've always loved it. Love your shirt on the intro. And no, the obsession can never be too strong!
I love the 'actual leopard' leopard print! I do like leopard print that is worn in a 'subtle' way because it is such a bold/loud pattern.
Thank you for this, Leena! Leopard print is definitely something I want to add to my wardrobe very soon! I'm a bit interested in your opinions on secondhand fur; I feel like I see so many massive mink coats in vintage shops that never sell, probably because so many of us are put off by the idea that it's actual fur. I own an amazing faux fur vintage cut coat right now, but wish it wasn't made of pure plastic. It's a hard line to draw I think, very personal. I feel bad that I enjoy the cut and fit of those fur coats, and am afraid that if people see me wear real fur, I'd get looked down on. I was thinking it would probably even be considered inappropriate to wear to lots of places like my work, or a vegan restaurant, because it's practically offensive to wear it? But it's definitely not a good thing to send all those fur coats to landfill either, right? I'm torn. It's also interesting to compare our perceptions of fur vs leather; it's much more acceptable to wear leather still, but not fur. Sure there are differences in the production and it's a lot easier to pass faux as real, but it's interesting that so many of us are up in arms about fur when leather is still a common and acceptable fabric for many people. This isn't to justify cruelty to animals, but interesting. Anyway, great video! Love your stuff, Leena!
@Grrranola
3 жыл бұрын
I never understood the position of people who are against wearing 2nd hand leather or fur. The animal is already dead and you're right that it's a waste to send these materials to landfill when they are still usable. Fur at least will break down over time while the plastic faux fur will never biodegrade.
@sheepladybaa
3 жыл бұрын
real fur will keep you crazy warm in the winter... there is a reason that animals have it. I agree that we shouldn't be harvesting fur from animals anymore, but I am also 100% okay with anything secondhand. If you take good care of it, it will last a VERY long time. So why waste an item that still has practical value?
Last night we were playing a code name game called Chameleon. I knew my hubby knew me when he used the word, “neutral” to signal leopard to me. Unfortunately, I had to pick a different word because my closet is pretty much black, white and leopard with pops of red. It is the best.
the leopard jacket over the leopard dress is AMAZING -- also rip anyone taking a shot for every mention of leopard :) love the vid
I used to think I didn't like leopard print but have since realised that I've actually owned at least 2 times. However, both were not traditionally coloured. One was a neon pink dress with neon blue markings / spots, the other a bottle green shirt with orange spots. Both were worn a lot! The dress was sold on, the shirt went to charity. No wait... I've got a jumpsuit upstairs which is a giant orange leopard print 😂🙈 OK so I'm definitely in the club!!
To this day, whenever I see leopard print, I think Mel B. Have now started to get into leopard print in my twenties. Definitely into leopard print as a neutral. That Jackie Kennedy coat is gorgeous though

One of my favorite dresses is leopard print (it has enormous pockets!!!) and as a kid, I had a faux-fur leopard print skirt my mom made me that I loved (what can I say, I love big cats!). I had no idea leopard print even needed defending
I was personally wronged by leopard print! Senior year of high school I participated in battle of the books, and a question was “In Uglies what pattern was on the main characters hoverboard” I said Leopard print and the answer was CHEETAH (or the other way around. I still don’t know) AND I WILL FOREVER BE ANNOYED. Ahem. It’s not my style but I adore how you talk about it! 😊
Oooh I bet the pink leopard print skirt would look great over the black dress with leopards on it!
I immediately think of Doreen from Birds of a Feather, she was always in animal print x
Characters that made me love leopard was Nana in the anime Nana, this rock singer who always wore a leopard coat and red dress because her abusive grandmother always policed what she wore, and Sarah Paulson's character in American Horror Story Hotel. Both characters embody the late 80's-early 90's glam rock meets grunge aesthetic that I love but also the leopard coat shows their rebellion, their nonconformity, they wear it like a form of protection because neither character has anyone looking out for them. It's relatable, fierce, unnerving and comforting all at once
Finally my specialism comes in handy *faints* but the more you know... Jacquard ("JackArd") is just how the fabric is woven, named after the type of loom, which allows designs of a non-linear nature to be fully woven, as oppposed to woven plain and the design printed on. It allows different types of fibres to be woven together, and different weave structures to be combined in the same design. It's often used for christmas party clothes to incorporate shiny fibres which would usually fall apart after a few washes. If you turn the fabric over often the reverse design should be on the other side, if its not lined. Usually clothes made from jacquard fabric are slightly heavier and more expensive. I'm so sorry if that was INCREDIBLY boring. Also, I don't really wear patterns generally, but I do have a leopard print scrunchie that I bloody love.
Ok look. I’ve been obsessed since I was a kid. You can always get me to wear anything as long as it came in leopard. But it’s deeper than that. Leopards, snow leopards specifically, are my favorite animal. Any big cats really. I come to tears watching videos of big cats. I threaten to bring one home one day but my husband tells me it will eat me. I don’t believe him 🤪. Thank you for talking about the different spot patterns, I know you said you don’t really care specifically but I hate it when people call a leopard print cheetah instead haha. THANK YOU for preaching the leopard print gospel and giving me permission to not hold back next time I tell myself I have too much.

A whole video on leopard print wouldn't usually be my go-to, but I really enjoyed this 😂 This video is such a good example of a creator making videos that they want to make, and the fact that they are compelled by the topic makes the video itself so much more compelling.
In 2013 I bought a leopard print coat because I liked it and because I had become a fan of Manic Street Preachers the previous year and leopard print has been a big part of the band's aesthetic, particularly in the early 1990s... it's been my favourite early spring/autumn/early+late winter jacket ever since, definitely a staple in my wardrobe.

I went through a major Manic Street Preachers phase in the early 2010s and I envied Richey's leopard print coat so much! It looked so edgy with the heavy eyeliner. I could never justify buying one because, where I live, I get to wear coats 5 times a year at the most, but I still think it's the coolest thing ever.
Never thought I'd be watching a nearly twenty minute video about leopard print but this is f*cking GOLD!!!!
All my managers wear neutral leopard for work and always look fab
I've always thought while growing up (prolli steered to that thought by my mother) that ''leopard print'' is tarty....... First person I remember wearing it, plus being tarty : Dorien Green - from Birds of a Feather and then Mandy Dingle on Emmerdale. As a teen I deliberately bought items in this print to annoy my mother, and LOVE it !! :) xx
