I'm not a fan of Chris Christie for a variety of reasons, but I appreciate the besties bringing him on for a discussion all the same. Robust conversation even with those with whom we may disagree is sorely needed more than ever. P.S. Acknowledging and balancing the federal budget is absolutely needed, so Chris Christie's prior work on budgeting (despite the personal hit that he initially took for that with his approval rating) is something that I can definitely appreciate and respect. In reality, no one candidate is going to be perfect, that's why it's so essential to hear from all of them. Thank you again, besties!

He literally kneecapped New Jersey Education by reducing their state Aid. Christie acknowledged that it wasn’t popular (shilling for the Rich and Elite never is), and then said he would do the same at the federal level. So Christie, in true NeoCon fashion would cut governmental functions that benefit the middle class to refinance social security and the deficit, shifting the burden away from millionaires and billionaires who pay starvation wages and rely on federal aid for their working population to stay alive. Talk about kicking a can down the road, we need a progressive tax policy in this country instead of continuing to watch wealth trickle up. This podcast continues to dodge that reality.

  • @jimpayne9545

@@jake20581 You likely have a very valid point, and I appreciate the additional feedback. I wasn't familiar with the deeper dynamics of how he had balanced the budget, but I did notice him saying in this podcast that he would keep military spending the same if he became President. I do worry about someone who wants to balance the budget, but won't even consider looking at ways to cut military spending. If you want to balance the budget, then the cuts themselves have to be balanced, and it speaks volumes that he won't even consider touching military spending.

Wow. What a refreshing interview. Christie is clearly not a black or white thinker- he is practical and pragmatic and won’t be boxed in politically or ideologically. This is someone who can work across the aisle to get things done. If republicans could actually nominate him, this is someone who could win the general. Great work on the interview guys- this format really works because it lets us see HOW people think, not just rewarding cheap sound bytes.

If he can do nationally what he did locally, then there's hope for Murica. What disappoints me, and we as the UK aren't in the position to judge the behaviour of others, is that it didn't take long for 'bipartisan' to creep into the conversation. You don't need to have a two-party situation, you've just allowed it to become that, basically through the gaming of your system by a few who don't act for the many.

Just keep in mind that when Christie dropped out of the Republican primary race and immediately backed Trump, it shocked the political world and vaulted Trump to the top of the race for the Republican nomination. Christie did that so he could be nominated to be Trump's Attorney General (or possibly VP). That would certainly have happened, except for the Bridgegate scandal that Christie's staff were involved in (and probably Christie knew about, but none of his staff would admit that). So we have Christie to thank for Trump getting the Republican nomination in 2016 and wining the Presidency.

This was a very worthwhile use of 2hrs. What impresses me about the Governor is his ability to think his way through the questions. Given the challenges the country will face between now and the end of the decade, we need a President who has managed a challenging state environment. I found some of the comments in the wrap-up interesting but was concerned that the group had a single make-or-break issue for candidate selection. If we learned anything from the Trump Presidency is that an issue no one had on their bingo card dominated his time in office, so this demands someone that adapts to the unknown. Critical thinking combined with actual experience are qualities we should be looking for in the next election.

I think Chamath touched on something incredibly important when he said that “the winning formula has been exposed” and that “[in order to win, you have to offer] radical ideas”. I don’t think he’s right though. I think that forcing candidates to support radical ideology for the sake of “winning” is a sure fire way to “lose” in the long run. The ontology of this country is unquestionable, our government ONLY works when the passions of one faction offset the passions of the other. Radical ideologies being supported by the highest level of governance negates the passions of the majority of the country and leads to division rather than unity. Of all modern political tropes, the necessitating of radicalism scares me the most. I hate seeing people not only support the notion of its necessity, but also fuel it. Huge mistake to focus on short-sided “winning” at the cost of long-term unity.

The ineffable appeal of this particular episode defies easy elucidation, yet I suspect it may be connected to my daughter's aspirations of pursuing a career as a corporate lawyer.
